The Way of the Leader: The Leadership Principles of Sun Tzu and Confucius

Rate this book
While "The Art of War" and "The Analects of Confucius" can give a philosophical vision of leadership, this book brings that vision to the bottom line. It is a schematic for victory, a roadmap for success. Donald G. Krause is the author of "The Art of War for Executives" and "The Book of Five Rings for Executives".

I liked this book a lot more than I expected to, picking it up originally to kill 5 minutes. The second section is what I'd consider the bulk of the book. I've only skimmed The Analects and The Art of War, so I can't talk too much about comparisons between Krause's texts & the originals. This section seems to consist of extracted modern/corporate rewordings in the form of proverbs from the source texts. I would say they were, for the most part, spot on.

The first section was also enjoyable - I particularly liked what it had to say about 'reengineering', though to be honest that section seemed mainly to rely on long quotes from other business books.

The third & last section was easily my least favourite. I would consider it for the most part unnecessary after what had already been said, & it would have perhaps been helped with a wider range of 'heroes' to use as examples of the book's message.

If anyone's wondering what that message is, Krause sums it up basically as 'SPARKLE'.

Self-Discipline
Purpose
Accomplishment
Responsibility
Knowledge
Laddership (He explains it in the book.)
Example

Overall, an easy read, a lot of nice quotes to be found.

One for uni/work. This one was surprisingly useful. It bills itself as Sun Tzu and Confucius for the modern business world but actually it’s packed with really good snippets of advice for leading teams and presenting oneself as a leader. Having lost a lot of my motivation through lockdown, it was just the geeing up I needed.
