Widely recognized as one of the great dog trainers of his time, Richard Wolters's tested techniques continue to endure. Family Dog was the first book written for any member of the family, from age six to sixty, who wants to train a dog fast. By following the book's simple instructions, anyone can have a well-trained dog in just sixteen weeks. In Family Dog Wolters * How to choose the right dog for your family and lifestyle * The benefits of play and relaxation * Talking with your dog-- it's not what you say, but how you say it * All the fundamentals of training-- house-breaking, basic commands, and tricks * Tips on grooming * The best dog diet in the world * First-aid and medical advice, and much more More than 200 all-new pictures in chronological, step-by-step sequence illustrate exactly what to do with your pet in a way that takes the frustration out of training and works for all breeds and any age.
*My rating/review is relative.. Published in 1963, this book is 61 years old. It obviously wasn't written for 2024.
We've gained a new pup in our extended family, which recently led to me lending out some training books from our dog shelf. We have a couple of 1960's bird dog books by Richard Wolters that, aside from being occasionally dated and not always PC, have really excellent information on the mental development of puppies. Those sections are relevant to all puppies and are quite good. I have tremendous respect for the Wolters, who loved his dogs and lived a fascinating life. His books are considered classics in the hunting dog world.
I was excited to learn Wolters wrote this book called Family Dog. I found a copy.
While much of the information is still beneficial, some hasn't aged as well.
Still, the good: I like that Wolters includes his six year old daughter in the training and photos. The concept of teaching kids how to handle and teach dogs is a good one. Chapter 3: The Dogs Mental Development, The five critical periods, and How a Dog Learns are topics that are repeated throughout the series and worthwhile.
The new pup has been over to socialize and play once a week for the past three weeks. Joy and fun. He's on his way to being a great Family Dog.
Pleasant reading and nice photos. Clear, simple training done by a 6 year old child, with parental supervision. Positive training with mild tapping/slaping occasionally. Health care is well done, but may be a bit outdated; Revised edition 1975.
There is some good information in this classic training book, but some of this is definitely out of date. And while some of the facts about dogs are useful, not all of the training advice is...
