About the series Shibari is the Japanese-inspired art of tying a subject to not only immobilize them, but to do so elegantly and beautifully creating an intimate and erotic experience for both the subject and the person tying. Adopted by rope enthusiasts all over the world, shibari, literally to tie or to bind, is a cornerstone of erotic rope art and the subject of captivating performances and photographs. However, in-depth resources for learning the art are difficult to obtain, making shibari intimidating, obscure and difficult to master. Until now. The Complete Shibari series is the most complete and accessible English-language guide to shibari ever published. Author Douglas Kent strips away shibari's mystery and reveals how to create visually stunning compositions with rope and the human form, in your own home or play space. This is going to be a reference book first and foremost. The instructions are clear and with high quality photos, but it's not an "inspiration" book. I expect to come back to the chapters about risks, safety and basic elements, but much less so to the step by step instructions for full ties.

All in all, I enjoyed the no-pretense style of writing. Makes the practice seem approachable and accessible.

This is the book that transformed me from wanting to get in to bondage to actually doing it. Totally simple and easy to remember, it has me looking at other peoples bondage and figuring out how they did it! A masterpiece of instruction.

There was a bunch of talk in the intro about the kind of body one must have to be a good rope bottom, which was honestly offensive and outdated. The implication being that if one's body doesn't fit into a specific category, that category being non-disabled, non-fat, and non-cis female, then you can be a rope bottom, but you'll be a burden to your top. Give me a fucking break. The only necessary portion was a mention of flexibility (and relevant only to the specific poses depicted in the book).

Ignoring that, the book itself was kind of unreadable. The symbols used were often too similar and sometimes color-coded, which isn't colorblind accessible. The use of symbols made for a confusing read where one has to flip back and forth from the page with the finished tie to the symbol legend page to the page with the specific tie, movement or friction indicated by the symbol, all while trying to tie a rope to you or your bottom's body. Perhaps if the author were so committed to full-color and minimizing the page count (and thus the dreaded symbols), they could have included a poster with the legend and the depicted meanings so that one is not expected to either have 8 hands or memorize a section of ties and frictions without any context.

Lastly, the model for every finished tie is white against a white studio background with a bright light on them using a flesh-y toned jute. I think you can see where I'm going with this. While there's some evidence that dyed jute has less tensile strength, it's not unsafe to use in the "Land" specific text. Just saying, it's confusing and kind of silly.

Save your money and check out the classes at shibaristudy.com. I avoided it for a long time because the price is pretty steep, but it's so comprehensive, inclusive, thoughtful, consent-oriented, and primarily taught by femmes. For real, there's like a 15+ hour series with Midori (Sex educator and Queen of shibari) on consent, and Anna Bones' Basics series is also just... so incredibly thoughtful and well-taught. Shibari Study has literally everything rope and rope-scene related that I could ask for.

Easily the most comprehensive instructional book on the shibari market, covering some very easy to understand safety concerns, some not so easy to understand knot diagrams, and some visually appeasing and clear to understand bondage diagrams.

This was the first book recommended to me for shibari, and to this day, it's the first book I recommend to anyone asking about what book to gram as a beginner.

Great book to get you started in the world of Shibari. Douglas doesn't spend his time teaching you fancy knots, he teaches a few basics then moves it forward to create fun ties for both the top and bottom.

This book is beautiful and a perfect conversation starter to introduce my visitors to shibari.

This is my new favorite bondage book. It is packed edge to edge with color photographs and helpful instructions. If you are looking for the most useful information in the smallest most well illustrated package this is it.
