This series was originally available on some sort of archaic technology called "tape cassettes". Thankfully, listening to the series in digital format is possible if you either know how to do it or know where to look :)

Because of how long ago this material was made, I can give a pass for the "dated" feel to cert parts of it.

It's mostly just audio recordings being made as group is told anecdotes, given certain explanations or summaries, etc.

Even though it has heavy leanings towards Native traditions and beliefs, I think it can be enjoyed by someone of any (or no) religious background. When you get right down to it, quite a lot of it has almost a Zen take on things -- quieting the mind, living in the moment, etc.

If the idea of sitting alone out in the middle of nature and being acutely aware of what's going on around you sounds interesting, you might want to check this out. If not, well, maybe this won't be for you.

Just a few nights ago, my fiance and I went outside to look at the moon, since it was a very clear night and the moon was very bright. It was about 1am at the time. As we walked outside, we spotted a deer foraging a few feet from the house. Spooked by the movement and noise, it retreated back into the woods next door. By patiently waiting and remaining (relatively) still, the alarm calls of nearby crickets and other creatures ceased and -- despite knowing that we still there -- it came back out and continued to forage near us. We continued to watch it for the next half-hour. In addition to the deer, we also saw two cats, and listened to a wide array of bird songs. If I hadn't read the book, who knows, perhaps I would have just accepted the fact that the deer had been scared off and we would have went back inside and never seen or heard any of that stuff.

As a side-note, it's amazing to me that the author/publisher hasn't made this stuff available for purchase via iTunes, Amazon MP3, etc. I can't even remember the last time that I owned a device capable of listening to cassette tapes... and, for some, CDs are going in that same direction as well. Ignoring digital distribution doesn't convince people to buy the product on outdated media, it simply encourages people to download content illegally for free. Not that I did that... I'm just hypothesizing ;)

Four stars instead of five only because I had to suspend my psychologist/scientist mind at times, especially when he talked about biofeedback, but the truth is that I really loved this book. And having had more than one “secret spot” for years, I know that most of what he says is true even if the rationale he offers is sometimes specious. This book is definitely not for everyone, but it’s become one of my favorites.

I finally understand spirituality and human ability and wellness in a way that I have been sensing but couldn't quite put into words. This is truly one of the wisest audio books I've discovered and Jon Young is truly a spiritual master. I have been feeling pulled towards learning about my Native American roots and this audio book totally makes it clear why. What I have been sensing is missing in my modern life is exactly what can be found in Native American wisdom. After this audiobook I am drawn to learning about my roots even more. When we attune to nature, we develop our brain and awareness in the way it was intended and we have access to senses and abilities that modern culture erroneously refers to as supernatural or extrasensory. They are only "extra sensory" in that we never naturally developed them in the first place. When we use the brain and body's deeper senses, it turns out we are all naturally empaths.
