Biogeography: An Ecological and Evolutionary Approach

Rate this book
Biologists searching for a resource that explores all of the exciting changes that have occurred recently in the field will turn to this eighth edition. It offers insight into the multidisciplinary nature of the field, presenting a sound historical base, up-to-date coverage, and a look at the latest controversies. The authors evaluate conflicting theories and provide a reasoned judgment as to which is preferable. In a new chapter the authors examine marine biogeography, so that biologists can compare and analyse the data, patterns and problems arising from continental, marine and island biogeography.

I read this to gain a better understanding of the world around me and it succeeded. It delves into topics in adequate detail to understand the geologic history of the world, glaciation, islands, and more in regards to speciation. Chapter 2, which gives an overview of interesting biogeographic examples was my favorite. A particularly memorable fact was how the eastern wood peewee range is directly correlated to the 4-degree Celcius line in the US due to its metabolic cold-tolerant limits. Chapter 7 was also memorable, especially when it discussed the honeycreeper speciation in Hawaii.

A comprehensive text book on a complex topic like biogeography. All its illustrations and examples are impeccable, the author is able to compile recent path breaking studies and research in this book. I will suggest this book for those who want to know the subject in a comprehensive way and you will be able to understand the disconnectedness different disciplines for a unique purpose . The book is written in a less jargon so that any student with a little background in natural sciences like Biology and Geology could be able to read without much effort.

This text has been recommended to me for biogeographical study. Actually my use of it is ongoing I consider it a biogeography bible, the text adequately explains all aspects of the genre from its history, to plate tectonics, related climate studies, species distribution, etc. it also investigates molecular evidence of various theories, continental, island and marine biogeography and ecosystem evaluations.
