Some people just seem to know they are meant to write, but it can still take a while to figure out exactly what their career will entail. Kate Douglas started out writing radio copy for a country western radio station in 1972, wrote and illustrated an educational cartoon strip for the American Mosquito Control Association for a number of years, was a newspaper reporter for a small town weekly where she covered everything from high school sports to drug busts, and then, in the mid-1980s, decided to write her first romance.

Many submissions and rejections followed.

In 1998, she sold to a small ebook publisher before anyone knew what an ebook was, but it wasn't until 2005, a full twenty years after finishing that first romance, that she signed with a New York publisher.

In January 2006, Kensington Publishing launched their Aphrodisia imprint of erotic romance with Kate's Wolf Tales, a sexy paranormal series about a lost race of shapeshifters. She went on to write 21 novels and novellas in that series, then wrote three other series for Kensington before moving to St. Martin's Press.

She has two series with SMP--The Intimate Relations series complete with three novels and one novella of romantic suspense set in California's wine country, and an erotic paranormal series, Feral Passions, set in California's Trinity Alps.

She is also continuing her Spirit Wild series, the sequel to Wolf Tales, independently.

Kate and her husband of over forty-five years have two adult children and six grandchildren. They live in the small town of Healdsburg, California, in the heart of the beautiful Sonoma County wine country.

I made it 140 pages before I finally gave up. The repetition of the back story (and previous 2 books, I imagine) never ends. The writing is terrible, the character development is rushed and involves A LOT of inner monologues, and the plot is conveniently moved forward through deus ex machina style tactics. Life is too short to finish bad books.

I admit to being addicted to this series. The characters are great and the writing is wonderful! This is a great series for the paranormal lover!As a matter of fact, fans of UF would love this series as well with this new book in The Demonslayers series.

While the romance is not as heated as I like it between the two main characters, their is a special connection that the two have that keeps the reader interested. I loved the angst and personalities of both and the story was great! At times, the plot can move a little slow within the book, but at most times it flowed nicely for me. While their are times I wanted to throttle some of the characters in the book, I always felt better when Dawson and Selyn were together. This book was refreshing in a way for the series in the fact that the main characters had emotional turmoil to balance out the action.

Even though I was a little disappointed in the little amount of heated scenes of romance, the emotional attachment between the two helped ease it. If you are a fan of the series, then I recommend adding this book to your pile! I loved the first book in the series, the second book was an okay read, but this book surpassed the others! A great new read from a masterful writer!

Phenomenally simple story dragged out over 400 pages; characters so simplistic they seem like children. Started intriguingly, but became very re
petitive and dull fairly quickly.

Review Courtesy of Dark Faerie Tales

Quick & Dirty: A novel of adversity overcome, and of happiness found. Oh and there are some demons, and witches and magic swords in there too.

Opening Sentence: The steady drip, drip, drip and the soft hum of overtaxed air purifiers were the only sounds Selyn heard as she cautiously pushed herself away from the cavern wall and moved silently through the darkness to the sleeping quarters.

The Review:

In the world of Lemuria, the battle against demon kind still rages there and on Earth, and our trusty band of supernatural demon killers is ever at the ready. This time the battle occurs in Lemuria itself, as one of the Lemurian leaders lets them in. You see, apparently for the last few millenia or so, the ruling body of Lemuria has been possessed by demons, and committing acts of treachery all over the place. The worst of which seems to be their many crimes against their females. Especially those warriors that once fought in the Demon Wars. These brave ladies were captured then forced into slavery in the crystal mines, several levels beneath where the light shines in Lemuria. They were then tortured and raped, each consequently becoming pregnant. Those who had sons were forced to give up their babies, those who bore daughters were forced to raise them as slaves, teach them how to work the mines, know that their children would forever be entombed like them. After raising their children to adult hood, each and every one of them chose to end their existence, leaving behind their daughters to toil in the mines. Their daughters still live in the mines to this day, and no one knows anything about them or their slavery, and they thus choose to call themselves, The Forgotten Ones.

Our heroine Selyn is one of these women. Caught by a guard walking where she didn’t belong, she is beaten within an inch of her life. When another guard, Roland who is loyal to the cause against demons, takes her to Earth in hopes that she can be saved. The only person that they can trust not to betray their secrets is Dawson, a veterinarian we met in book two. Dawson tirelessly works to save her, and accomplishes the task, with a little help from a friend, and a sprite named Willow.

After her healing, Selyn helps to unearth another treacherous scheme in Lemuria, the kidnapping and exile of the true King, Artigos the Just, father of the man who is currently running things under the influence of the demon that has taken his soul. When his existence is uncovered by the group, efforts are made to free him, along with the continuing efforts to save the Forgotten Ones, begun previously in book two. Selyn and Dawson eventually accomplish this feat, and also the release of every other member of their crew who have been taken, again, by guards still following their inner demon.

Together, our demon slaying band of misfits, now including a rather powerful witch, along with some other loyal Lemurians, Artigos the Just and the whole legion of Forgotten Ones, fight the good fight against a huge number of demons including the supreme badass we have seen throughout the whole series. Will they never be allowed to finish him off for good? Geez, I’m tired just reading about it. These poor people must truly be exhausted. This book, as the last two, end with another temporary victory over the bad guy, and with the promise of more fun to come. Oh, and some love between our hero and heroine duo.

The story arc continues in book three, just as superb as the first two, and leaves you waiting for the next book. Seriously, these books must be good to keep us all reading after three books with no actual good guy victory dance. Though, one almost hopes that they don’t get him in the end, because that might mean the end of the series. And wouldn’t that just be awful?

Notable Scene:

Dawson had never, not in his wildest dreams, imagined that his training with a rapier in college would ever come in handy, but as he slashed and lunged and thrust with his ruby blade, he felt the moves coming back as if he’d never left his training in all the years since his studies at UC Davis.

He glanced at Selyn and had to force himself to look away. She was truly a warrior with her flashing eyes and her look of grim determination. She fought her opponent with grace and style, and it was obvious the man hadn’t expected a woman of such beauty to show so much skill.

Taron shouted, and Dawson saw one of the big Lemurian’s opponents go down. Demonic mist burst from the fallen guard, and Taron caught it with crystal. The second guard lunged forward, and Dawson lost them in his peripheral vision. Only Taron had faced two, and from what little he knew of the man, Dawson could already hear the tales he and Alton would be telling when this was over.

Dawson’s opponent was growing desperate, thrusting awkwardly now, breathing hard, and going for the kill with more force than skill. Dawson eluded the man’s blade as he spun on the balls of his feet and twisted away, first to the right, then to the left.

He suddenly realized he was actually grinning. He hadn’t had this much fun in years, and he wanted to shout with the of of the battle, that knowledge that he fought beside a woman he loved, that he fought for a world that had been nothing more than myth and legend.

He, Dawson Buck, small town veterinarian, was fighting demons with a magical sword in another dimension. Damn. Aunt Fiona would love this!

He parries a strong blow and went in for the kill just as Taron’s final opponent went down. The huge guard Taron had fought was mortally wounded, but he managed a powerful kick as he fell, catching Dawson behind his left knee. The force of the blow buckled Dawson’s leg. It folded beneath him just as his opponent slashed wildly at his chest.

Dawson felt the burn of the obsidian blade as it pierced his side, heard the scrape of obsidian against bone, and felt a rush of anger from his sword, that any demon should have harmed the one who wielded this blade.

Vaguely, he heard Selyn’s scream and Alton’s curse, but pain engulfed him and weakness drove him to him to his knees. His sword leapt from his nerveless fingers and impaled itself in the one who’d stabbed him.

Dawson stared, fascinated as his amazing ruby blade just flew out of his hand, all on its own, and avenged his death. For that was what it was, he realized. His death.

He gazed into the growing darkness and saw his Aunt Fiona smile.

I don’t know it there is any other books for this series but it looks like this is the end for now. Selyn is a warrior born into slavery due to demon possession of the people in charge of the Lemurians. Dawson is a vet living in Sedona that is put in charge of Selyn after she is found half dead from a beating. These two along with others will be fighting demons it seems forever but things get complicated as usual and sooner or later love will overcome everything.

I'm really enjoying this series. This book takes us on another journey to Lemuria. We have another front row seat to the demon war and the end is a wild ride with the Demon King. I enjoyed the new character of Selyn and loved that she found her true love in Dawson.

Setting: vet's house in Sedona; Lemuria – the crystal cave (for swords), the mines (imprisoning the women warriors), Council’s chambers, and father’s rooms, the portals

Characters:
Selyn of Elda’s line (StarFire): one of the daughters of the women warriors, imprisoned and forced to work the mines; has been meeting and strategizing with Taron – and when returning after a meeting, is caught by the guard, and beaten and left for dead; found and taken to the vet;

Dawson Buck (DemonsDeath): human vet, who creatively figured out how to capture demon mist leaving the animals once they were caged using a vacuum cleaner, baggies, and freezer; he does his best to care for Selyn, and deepens his commitment to their cause of fighting demons… but also for freeing the women;

Roland of Kronus: Captain of the Guard; takes Selyn for help; fights for Lemuria, seeking out other right minded guards, touching swords and making theirs crystal also;

The Forgotten Ones: the daughters of the women warriors… after the demon war 3,000 years ago, the women were imprisoned to work the mines, and large guards set over them – and beat and raped them into submission; the women have died, but their daughters live – though beaten, not raped (after all the guards are their fathers); ends up that the guards have been possessed of demons… and though difficult as so closely tied to them after all this time, they are freed of their demon one by one; and they fight side by side with their daughters;

DemonSlayer with the spirit of Ella, Selyn’s mother: Selyne and the sword’s spirit talk, and ease one another;

Alton of Artigos (HellFire) / Ginny Jones: kidnapping dad, taking him to a witch, to exorcise his demon… almost loose him, but his wife sits with him, talks with him, pulls him from the edge; steps into dad’s position; leads the fight against the demons that one of the councilors lets in via the portal;

Alton’s father, head of the Council of Nine: they get the gentle, loving dad/husband back;

Artigos the Just (DemonsBane): has been imprisoned with the women, although in a separate set of caves – well appointed caves; he is still strong, and has been able to ‘read’ some of his people, so able to keep abreast of what’s happening… when freed, he and his special sword unite the guards, the women, the commoners, the elite to battle the demons and protect them.

BumperWillow: helps to heal Selyn – and protect them from a demon attack…

Taron of Libernus: in the crystal caves, and facilitating of crystal swords for the women (and Artigos the Just ruby red sword);

Memorable scenes:
“Alton of Artigos, the son of Lemuria’s chancellor, had not even known of the slaves’ existence. Not until Roland, the sergeant of the Lemurian Guard, had taken it upon himself to follow up on the rumors…”

“Eddy grabbed her hand and placed Selyn’s fingers atop the shimmering crystal. It was warm to the touch. ‘Selyn, this is my crystal blade,’ she said. ‘She is sentient. The first time she spoke to me, she told me her name was DemonSlayer. But I believe you know the spirit that gives life to my sword. Was the warrior Elda your mother?”

Merged review:

Kate Douglas brings her newest addition to her Demonslayer series to full steam. This story will pull readers in and leaves them satisfied.

I have to say that I don’t particularly like reading books out of sequence. Sometimes an author doesn’t give enough background information to get an idea of what had occurred in prior books. With that being said, I had to go back a bit to understand the world building. Douglas does write in a way that flows and makes the readers know what happened prior to the current story. I do recommend going back and reading the first two books because the world can be a bit complicated. This book far exceeded my expectations.

Selyn is a Forgotten One daughter who is being held captive by the Council of Nine. The women of Lemuria (her bonded sisters) are planning to escape when she is beaten and dragged by into captivity. Her only chance to escape and to begin the war against the council rests in the form of Dawson Buck, a healer, a man who will save her and restore her into a skillful warrior. Dawson brings out the passion that lies deep within Selyn. Together they must put everything on the line for their freedom and love.

Selyn is a strong female character. She has survived much in her lifetime and I really liked her character throughout the book. I can always respect a strong female. After being chained, beaten and enslaved for years, Selyn still can hold her own. Her fiery personality and ability to not relent to her circumstances is compelling and makes one want to root for her.

Dawson at times appears to be a side character. Then there are times when he compliments Selyn very well. He does have a challenged to heal Selyn with his love and affection, which by the end of the book he completes that challenge well. The emotional connection between Dawson and Selyn is well developed.

My problem with them as a couple is that at times there is no romantic connection. Maybe that could be because this is an Urban Fantasy book and that in itself lacks the romantic undertones that I normally need to satisfy the romantic in me. I would have liked the author to spice it up a bit and make them scenes between them more heated.

The action in this book is superb. I love the fast paced writing and the quick dialogue. The author knows how to pack a punch with deadly force. The book does have a tendency to move slowly in points but it picks up speed with the intensity of the action. Starfire is an enjoyable romantic urban fantasy read.

Starfire - Kate Douglas
* I received this ARC/book free from the author in exchange for an honest review*

Starfire is the third full length novel in the Demonslayer series and it picks up where Crystal Dreams left off. Selyn is found near death in the caverns after she is brutally beaten by one of the guards. Roland, carrier of crystal gets her help in the form of a local vet in the Earth Dimension, Dawson Buck.

Dawson has been helping Alton, Ginny, Dax & Eddy in their fight against demons. He works tirelessly all night trying to save Selyn and with the help of Willow’s healing magic, Selyn makes it through the night. Dawson is stunned at the intense feelings he has for Selyn, even though he just met her.

Selyn is a brave warrior but she is wary of men because they have never treated her kindly. She wants to trust Dawson but just doesn’t know if she can. She has vowed revenge for all of the “forgotten” ones but revenge quickly turns into something else.

Together this small band will take on the entire Lemurian council and a world filled with demons. Will they be able to save both Lemuria and Earth from the demons? With the help of the “forgotten” ones and a leader that everyone thought was dead, they are going to try.

I loved everything about this book. The story flowed effortless and kept me entertained the whole time. The characters were interesting and complex that dealt with real life issues, along with a bunch of demons. I loved that the story of Dawson and Selyn was not overshadowed by the previous characters but enhanced by them. The reasoning behind the actions of Alton’s father finally made sense after I read this book.

There was so much going on that it’s hard to pick any single scene that was my favorite. The scene with Artigos the Just and the Forgotten was moving, the scene with Dawson and Selyn fighting about broke my heart.

I can’t wait to read the final book in this series to see how it all ends. I want the Demon King dead but I have a feeling he is going to wreak lots of havoc in the next book too.

Overall I really enjoyed Starfire and give it 4½ Flaming Hearts.

The third in the Demonslayers series, Starfire gave us a great story of love, redemption and revenge.

Selyn is one of the Forgotten Ones, a whole class of female warriors who were the reason why the Lemurians were so successful in wars past. Now, they are tossed aside and left to become miners... Essentially forgotten by the Lemurians who consider themselves "upper class". However, the Forgotten Ones haven't forgotten, nor have they forgiven.

Dawson is a really cool man who brings his compassion and knowledge of life and healing to his story of true love. He's a good man, with a good heart. He's also Selyn's chance at bringing the Forgotten Ones out of their bonds of slavery and true love and the freedom that it brings.

I really liked the story between these two, especially as Selyn overcomes her obstacles and learns to love while learning to trust a man. I felt that this was a great way to bring all the players to the front.

It made me think about how I'd feel if I were forgotten, abandoned to a life of misery and servitude. I knew I wouldn't like it one bit and I was angered for their sake. I wanted to go right up to Alton's father and strangle him slowly and mercilessly for his ineptitude as a leader and as a man.

Now, it was a bit slow in certain areas, but I plunged right on, and saw the characters develop. I also got to read about them kicking ass and taking names, which is always a good thing, as I do so love a kick-ass heroine (and hero!)!

All in all, I felt that the story, while slow at times, was strong and the most emotional of all the Demonslayers books.

I thank Ms. Douglas for this great read and I hope to see these wonderful characters in the future (HINT HINT, KATE).

StarFire (DemonSlayers #3)by Kate Douglas. Paranormal Romance. 4/5 star because it just didn't feel like that deep of a book compared to the last books.

http://darkelvengirl.blogspot.com/201...

Selyn and Dawson Buck are the main characters in this book along with a few chapters in other characters point of views. To me it seemed like there was a lot more switching characters then the other books.
The story was mainly about all the characterless trying to find the Demon King, freeing the Lemurian people, and all the Forgotten Ones from their lives as slaves. This all is possible because the crystal sword can be replicated giving the true warriors a weapon while the nobleman that have swords well they never deserved to have them in the first place in my opinion.
Dawson and Selyn both get themselves some very interesting swords, and join in the war. Selyn is used against them because the Demon Kind really just wants Dax. I think that Selyn and Dawson's relationship will be the funniest out of them all since she knows very little of the human world. I'm still wondering rather Dawson's going to quit his job because killing demons, and working as a vet. Means he could be in the wrong place when a bog fight breaks out, and he could be stuck a work.
I wouldn't say this could ever be my favorite book in the series, but the cover has to be one of my all time favorite.
BumperWillow needs a more important role in this story I don't think they are living quite up to their whole potential yet. I mean she can heal and smell where the demons are. I think she would get placed a lot more in the series then the amount she is.

seemed a tad more UF than PNR. I get that each book has a HEA for a couple but the Sci Fi Adventure dominated the book. It was around 100 pages before the first chaste kiss. No lusting on her part. I guess the lack of ROMANCE dominating the book made it seem more UF with PNR back up.

I didn't read book 1 or 2. I think I would have enjoyed it more if I had. I found the world and people very confusing, spending much of my time trying to figure out what was going on and put puzzle pieces together rather than just enjoying the journey.

The characters did seem very compelling. I am torn on them in a way. I normally crave having more of past couples in future stories.. BDB just doesn't utilize the women from the past well enough in my opinion. But with so many beloved couples and faces getting time in this story I think that contributed to the lack of romance for the couple in this book. Ginny almost seemed the heroine more than Selyn or Dawson.

The talking sword and multiplying sword thing was tough on me to. I had to focus to not see it as hokey. I like how Kate Daniel's (by Iliona Andrews) sword seems sentient. But having it actually have a soul was something I personally had to work to embrace.

The evil that has infiltrated the Lemurian race is as powerful as ever in this fourth installment of The Demon Slayer series, and the heroes just keep getting better and better. Daws’ character is an average guy on the outside, but with a heart the size of a mountain, he is more of a hero than any woman could hope for. He can be sweet and silly, but those sexy eyes say it all, and Selyn knows how good she has got it. I would very much recommend reading about all of these fabulous couples in the order in which they are written, because each one is just too good to pass up.

First off i have to say that i have not read the rest of the series, it is very unlike me to jump the gun but, I am so glad i did! Though there were a few things that pulled me up and made me wish i knew more, it was a fantastic read. I felt as though i was right there along side Dawson and Selyn in there epic adventure to save not only her world but Earth and Atlantis. I will be buying the first books of the series for sure. :)

This was much better that I thought. It did take me longer to get into it but that was more to do with trying to remember what happened in the last 2 books. But still good non the less. But this series you do have to start from book one and then go through, you can not just pick one up and for it to be good. These book I find they build on eachother.

This book is definitely a lot more action-packed than Hellfire. Some may quibble about the romance elements but I believe it makes sense in the overall scheme of things.

A couple of characters cropped up in this book that weren't mentioned at all in the previous books and it looks like their story was told in the anthology Nocturnal that I now need to hunt up and read!
