As an American gardener, I am always disappointed in British gardening books. Their gardens are just so unlike ours in style and plantings. While Hendy's book has gorgeous photos and an interesting text, her ideas and mine just do not mesh. All the garden structures show an age and maturity that few Americans can accomplish, but they lack the spontaneity and creativity that many American gardens have. Even the last chapter titled "Child's play" is way too staid for most Americans-the playhouse featured is an colorless affair. And perhaps there is part of the difference-American gardens are for activity and living, for kids, and dogs, and entertaining. I wish American libraries who buy more gardening books from American authors and less from British sources.
