Form has always been one of the most important aspects of ceramics and one that continues to challenge and stimulate potters throughout the world. In this new paperback edition, Peter Lane explores the various elements involved in the design and making of ceramics by concentrating on the two fundamental pottery vessels-bowls and bottles-which provide the basis for almost all others. This is an essential reference for potters, historians, and collectors.
This is the kind of book that every ceramics/pottery lab or studio should have on hand for students to study... it has a lovely selection of exampled of ceramic and pottery, but it also shows silhouettes in the back, which it challenges readers to interpret... you might be surprised, when presented with a black and white, side view... how many different ways that could be created- is that curve in in, or an out? a flange or a dip? It's a very interesting book, and a good standby for anyone's library on the topic.
This is the book I found most inspiring when I was in ceramics school, yet my own work was completely unlike anything in this book. I'm just a fan of British studio pottery, and there's a lot of it in here. The book has lots and lots of quality photographs of very diverse vessel shapes, and has a very interesting "silhouette library" as well.
