In addition, Hunter has interviewed top dealers, curators, arts lawyers, and appraisers to bring you the best advice
• Advantages to buying real art instead of reproductions • Determining if a piece of art is fairly priced • Predicting if an artist’s work will go up in value • Techniques for negotiating a price with a dealer • Developing your artistic taste, so you’ll know if you’ll still love your purchase ten years down the road • How to preserve art in your home • Resources, websites, and magazines that will help you learn more about the market and where to find different types of art
Lisa Hunter is the author of The Intrepid Art Collector (Three Rivers/Random House) and the co-writer of The Art of We Happy Few (Dark Horse/Penguin Random House Canada).
The above are the only two books that should be on this page. Goodreads frequently adds books by other Lisa Hunters, but they are not the same author. Similarly, there should not be a blog associated with this page, though blogs of other Lisa Hunters are sometimes added in error.
Although the art market develops fast and this book is 6 years old it is a great and helpful resource how to start or build an art collection. Written in a personal and easy to read style but nevertheless with a lot of helpful information it provides general advice (e.g. dealing with dealers, buying at an auction) as well as tips regarding specific art categories (contemporary, 19th/20th century, photography, prints, vintage posters, native american, african, oriental rugs and antiquities). Don't expect any pictures in this book, there is only text, but it's so worth reading it!
Absolutely fabulous book about the ins and outs of art collecting. It's not a hobby for snooty people, I'll have you know. I highly recommend it and Hunter provides a wide array of helpful hints and she even has a blog that keeps you apprised of the art scene. A must for the art lover!!
