Bride of the Water God #6

Bride of the Water God, Volume 6

Rate this book
At the start of this series, Soah was willing to sacrifice her life to the feared god Habaek to save her drought-stricken village on Earth. However, she wasn't killed by the powerful Water God — she was rescued and taken to the magical kingdom of Suguk. Once there, she met moody gods of the elements and a mysterious husband who took her as his bride — but then spurned her. While Habaek yearns to treat Soah as a proper husband would, he's cursed to live in the form of a little boy during the day, only reverting to his true adult self at night. Trying to keep this strange secret from Soah, he hides behind the fake identity of "Mui" at night, when he competes with other unusual gods for her attention. Will this be the volume in which the Water God finally spills the truth to Soah — or will other conspiring, jealous gods succeed in driving a permanent wedge between him and his human bride? Cursed and pursued by an unknown, shape-shifting tormentor, Habaek is also led to believe that his previous human bride is still alive!

I am continuously drawn into the this series by what I like to call the "atmosphere." The art work is dreamy and gorgeous, and I love the god-world created by Mi-Kyung Yun. My one contention is that the story can be confusing, and some of the character motivations seem so similar that I can often confuse one character for another in a given scene. In fact, I had to go back and re-read volume 5 before diving into this one just to make sure I had a decent handle on where we stand with the plot. But all that critique aside, I can't seem to abandon this series. I find it oddly compelling...

Although I'm behind, the art has been looking even more beautiful, incredibly majestic...including the "filler pages".

The story can be a little complicated to understand at times, but that actually helps the plot...it gives me a chance to understand each character.

This series is getting better and has some fun suprises. Between the art and the story it is worth it and has some good intrigue to it to keep me going.

In a fated sense, she is my universe. Trifling with her and complicating things further will annoy me, which will only bring about my wrath. If you cross the line, woman, you will not be forgiven. — Mui

Knock me over with a feather... Mura has a love interest. Bang Cheon-Goon "Biryeom", God of the Wind. They have history. As longer history as Mura has with Habaek. Biryeom has a brilliant character design, all mystery and feathery wings. The intention of that relationship potential is not subtle either, posing and style directly match what was done with the main couple.

I honestly didn't think that Mura would get a love interest. I don't know what I expected for her, she was in a strange position but it worked for a court. I like Biryeom though. Nakbin continues to be her atrocious self but Yohee is proving to be the best friend a bride could ask for. I wasn't aware until now how weak Habaek (as opposed to his Mui self) is, that is important in this part of the story. There is a lot of detail I'm only just starting to pick up on, especially in clothing, like the phoenix detailing for Tae.

The main cast or at least some of them are considering Huye as in love with Soah. He is certainly more than a little enamoured with her. He's promised to be her confidant and to be there for her but I don't know if he really is in love. I'm not sure he even knows what romantic love is. He isn't what he appears. He's given up a lot to be Habaek's General.

In another review I'm going to have to comment more in-depth about the poetry Mi Kyung Yun uses at the start of each volume. But this one, in particular, suits Soah and Habaek. It feels like a lament. Their relationship is not easy, Soah is essentially a pawn in chess game.

The artwork is pretty but confusing. The heroine is not more than a pretty face, storyline is hardly followable and gets boring because things seem just to happen. I stopped reading the series aftet this book.

Loved it! I just want Soah to realize that Mui and Habaek are the same person! And I want Nakbin to go away and I want all of the mysteries to be solved!

Az előzőhöz képest ez a cselekmény annyira meh volt. Ráadásul kényelmetlen is.

Ez Manhwa sorozat ilyen? Hármasokban értékelhető jó, mégjobb és közepes-ként?

Ez történik?

I'm still not totally connected to the story. The flashbacks to the past did not explain all.

This series is starting to pick up, and the timeline jumps are easier to recognize. Although I'm somewhat frustrated by the person who claims to be Nakbin. I just don't get her motivations right now. She's so vile.

When I first started this series I knew it was a romance but the art was lovely and I know very little of Korean mythic tradition in which this is steeped. Having a water god cursed to be a boy (Habeak) by day and a man (Mui) by night was interesting. Soah, his bride, was actually a sacrifice by her village to end a drought. She was cast into the sea to die hoping to please Habeak and he saved her.

Not surprising, there are many other gods and goddesses who don’t get along and are always plotting something. Habeak himself is embarrassed about his curse and instead of just doing the sensible thing and telling Soah, he allows her to see him as Mui. Naturally after five volumes, Soah is in love with Mui and wants to be with him rather than Habeak. To complicate matters more, a woman who looks just like Habeak’s dead former bride, Nakbin, has been brought into the heavens. She might even be Nakbin.

And in this volume, the storyline starts to lose me for two reasons. One, it’s getting so convoluted and too many of the gods/goddesses look alike I’m losing track. Two, the whole petty jealousy/competing for a lover thing has never worked for me. I found this volume a bit confusing and disappointing. Soah doesn’t have the backbone to stand up for herself or even to admit to Habeak that she loves another (in fact only seems to want the boy when Nakbin does). I’ll be reading on but mostly because I found this and the next three volumes at a used book store and bought them since I had been enjoying it. Now, if I liked romance more than I do (I don’t) I might really be enjoying this.

Well the story is certainly picking up with the addition of even more new characters. I think in a series like this it can become hard to pay attention because there are a lot of characters that jump in and out of this series. In this series we are introduced to another new character and then we go back to learn more about Mura and what her wishes and desires have been throughout her life. It was interesting to take a step back from Soah and Habaek and learn more about the other Gods and Goddesses in the story but also confusing at the same time. Plus with the addition of the new bride that looks like Nabkin it is hard to tell her and Soah apart, you really need to pay attention in this volume in order to have a chance of grasping everything that is going on.

I really did like learning all of the things we learned in this volume but it can become a bit confusing and just too much to take in, especially since the story relies so much on the artwork instead of the character’s speaking about what is going on. The artwork is still as beautiful as ever but the story is a little confusing. I hope some things get sorted out in the next volume so that things become more clear to the reader.

Honestly this shit make me appreciate masterpieces like Fruits Basket, Naruto and Ouran so much.

This whole thing with Mui and Habaek got really annoying. I mean DUDE! It’s been SIX FUCKING volumes! Geez. And I mean, there are SO many clues; everybody calling Mui a water god, ‘Nakbin’ calling little Habaek, Mui—BUT SHE REFUSES TO SEE. SO OBLIVIOUS. This shit is giving me unwarranted stress. Ugh.

Also, I don’t get why hu-ye is ‘in lurv’ with Soah. They had minimal interaction, she’s the bride of his master and the only time she gives him the time of the day is when Mui ditches her. Talk about dysfunctional.
The only semi-interesting thing at this point is the Emperor. I wonder what he wants.

Hateful vitriol. Useless misunderstanding. Scheming. Drugging. Skullduggery. Secrets. Lies. Conspiracy. Innocent heroines uncanny, inane desire to have faith in bad boy hero. This has ALL the trappings of daytime a soap opera.

I've lost patience.
This story draws you in with its beautiful artwork and story. You may like the main characters but the rest of the characters are annoying. Some seem to have no motives for thier actions while others motives seem so silly you wonder why they are even here in the story. They are all god's and here they are picking at each other for no good reason. The main female character is so naive it makes you cry and the rest are just bored bullies with infinite power and too much time on their hands. I made it up to volume six and I still feel the same way about this story as I did in the beginning... great look, interesting plot, stupid characters.
