Bloom's Modern Critical Interpretations

Tennessee Williams's The Glass Menagerie

Rate this book
Premiering in 1944 and winner of the New York Drama Critics' Circle Award, The Glass Menagerie was Tennessee Williams's first popular success. The play introduced Williams's notion of plastic, or sculptural, drama, as he incorporated both sound and lighting into his stage directions in an attempt to heighten the audience's emotional experience. This updated Bloom's Modern Critical Interpretations guide is an essential resource for those seeking to deepen their appreciation of this fascinating character study.

Harold Bloom was an American literary critic and the Sterling Professor of Humanities at Yale University. In 2017, Bloom was called "probably the most famous literary critic in the English-speaking world." After publishing his first book in 1959, Bloom wrote more than 50 books, including over 40 books of literary criticism, several books discussing religion, and one novel. He edited hundreds of anthologies concerning numerous literary and philosophical figures for the Chelsea House publishing firm. Bloom's books have been translated into more than 40 languages. He was elected to the American Philosophical Society in 1995.
Bloom was a defender of the traditional Western canon at a time when literature departments were focusing on what he derided as the "school of resentment" (multiculturalists, feminists, Marxists, and others). He was educated at Yale University, the University of Cambridge, and Cornell University.

This was the Analyse of the first play I’ve ever read. And I had to read it for my project at university. Never knew that I can fall in love with a play so much! But you could relate to every little details and I loved it everything about it!!

Loved it. The metaphor with the glass unicorn is a bit obvious, but still incredibly touching.
