"I am a writer that creates stories and characters for black girls and women who never got to see themselves as the protagonist. Whether you were told that your skin was too dark, your hair was too nappy, your body was too big or too tall or all of the above, I’m here to tell you it was all a lie and I have something written just for you. For us."
- This book was SO cute!! If you’re looking for a fluffy read that’s going to give you Disney Channel vibes, you’ll love this book. Keller never Kel is EVERYTHING!! Truly gives prince charming vibes. This is the first book from this author, but it won’t be the last. - The beginning of the book was giving slow burn, but I really enjoyed that because Kellen had to really break down Wendy’s walls. This book has a few spicy scenes, but nothing too wild which I really loved. The entire time I read this book I was imagining it as a movie. It was so beautiful! - The ending of this book was everything I needed and more! Will definitely be reading more from this author in the future because this book was so fluffy and fun.
WOW…such a cute story….Kellen & Wendy made such an adorable couple….Wendy worked for her uncle at his diner and Kellen was a customer…. My second time reading the story was with the audiobook….Wesleigh did a phenomenal job as usual….the hospital scene brought a tear to my eyes….although, I’d previously read the story and was aware of the outcome…Wesleigh brought the story to life.
Imagine finding the love of your life at the worst possible time in your life. Allow me to set the scene. Kellen, not to be confused with Kel, is crushin’ on Wendy the waitress at the local diner. To make sure his presence is known, he posts up in her section every day, allows her to order for him (because, he trusts her judgement of course), and leaves a $100 tip on each visit. Come through big tipper! When Kellen finally builds up the courage to ask Wendy out, my girl had to let him down easy like the Isley Brothers. After a few mishaps, Wendy is working on rebuilding her life and getting herself together. So, a relationship is the last thing she’s thinking about. But, Kellen would not be deterred. He wore young Wendy down until she finally gave in and agreed to a first date. But, the plot thickens because Kellen is keeping a secret that could severely impact his HEA with his future wife. Insert dramatic theme music here. Waiting On Wendy was a sweet when boy meets girl kind of love story. The characters were sickeningly adorable but, in a good way. I loved the interactions between Wendy and Kellen and how organically they fell in love. These two will definitely tug at your heartstrings.
First, this COVER!! 😍😍 And the story was just as beautiful! I devoured it in less than a day! I loved the love between Wendy and Kellen 💜 imperfect, highs and lows, but isn't that kind of love worth waiting for? Sign me up for the next read from Ms. Glover please! She's got a fan in me 😊
This story was different and I'm not sure if I liked it or not. I'll explain. This was definitely a love story. Wendy waited on Kellen every time he comes to the diner. They eventually fell in love. I can't tell you when or how, cause to me, their interaction was minimal. He was doing these overly grand gestures for her and it was more awkward than cute. Kellen has health issues and when he shared that with Wendy, it didn't go at all how I thought it would go. It didn't go bad, just not at all how I expected them to proceed. I wanted more about that. The story was told in Wendy's POV, but I would've loved to have been in Kellen's head as he dealt with his health issues, especially after he fell for Wendy. I don't think they lacked chemistry, because after they got together and started dating, the love was there. But their love scenes were a bit lackluster, I almost don't remember them. But I will say, they loved each other extremely well. I loved that for them. The story didn't start to get real until the last 20% of the book and it was done so well. And the cover of the book was what got me first. Beautiful. The other reviews and ratings of the book were in favor of the book, so it might be me. Cause like I mentioned before in the beginning, I neither loved nor hated the story. This is my second book by this author. I loved the first one, so I would consider checking out more from her catalog. 2.7⭐️
I want to start by saying that the cover of this book was absolutely gorgeous! I just had to read it just from the cover alone. “Waiting on Wendy” was a really cute story. Wendy is a waitress down on her luck and suffers from anxiety. She meets the handsome Kellen and was drawn to his sad eyes. Wendy said something to Kellen that he needed to hear at the right time. It lit something inside of him up.
It was soooo adorable reading about Kellen trying to win Wendy over by coming to the diner almost daily. I enjoyed their banter and flirting. Kellen was a dream come true for most women, but Wendy wanted to get her life in order before she jumped into a relationship. I commended her for that. Because I damn sure wouldn’t have denied that man🤣🤣
The first half of the story was feel good and a pretty light. The second half was still cute at times, but it was pretty heavy and I didn’t see this coming. There were many times I got emotional. Turns out Kellen had a serious health condition. I loved how he wanted to love and literally give his all to Wendy.
I really enjoyed this story, but there was a scene towards the end that didn’t sit right with me. I won’t quite spoil it, but it was illegal and pretty unethical. The decisions that were made had me side eying Wendy and the doctors. I wish the author would have done more research on advanced directives and how they work. I understand that this is a work of fiction, but it still has to make sense.
This story was also told solely from Wendy’s POV and I wish we got to read what was going on in Kellen’s head. It was only 168 pages and I wished it were longer.
Overall, I really enjoyed this book! Tanzania Glover is a new to me author. I look forward to checking out the rest of her catalog.
What an amazing story! I had no idea that this read would take me on a journey, where so many of my emotions would be explored! Just wow! ❤ Poor Wendy has had a tough life, and it just keeps on giving her hell! Her one ray of light, is that she will someday own the diner, that she currently works in. One night at the diner, an innocent quick conversation changed her life! Alright now, Mr. Kellen, not Kel! This man has influence, and all the money one could ever want! But sometimes all the money in the world can’t save you! When Wendy saw Kellen’s sad eyes and told him it would be okay; that gave him a jump start on the rest of his life! Kellen dealing with serious health concerns in private, wanted to enjoy his life to the best of his ability, with her! It was absolutely adorable how Kellen would come to the diner daily, to see, speak and essentially wait for Wendy! She had her reservations about Kellen, or any man for that matter, as she didn’t have her life together. But, when she gave him a chance, let the swooning begin! I loved them together! However, my heart raced for a while, as I read and hoped for the best! Great job Tanzania! 👍👍👍
Okay, when I started this story, at first, the story was giving me a slow vibe. But then I realized, the pacing in this story needed to be meaningfully slower. We needed to experience Wendy's manifestation through the trials and tribulations of life. Then later it was important to introduce Wendy to her future. The winding path included wealthy guy, Kellen,'not'Kel. He would become a significant part of her journey. I knew once we discovered Kellen's real motivation to be with Wendy, it would be heartwarming. I am pleased to recommend this book. Wow, I'm all choked up now with happiness..😚.
I went into this book with too many expectations; I think that was the initial issue. I had heard this was a retelling of Princess and the Frog. Where? This was nowhere no near that, but I digress.
What we have here is a quick read, but a very undeveloped story. The romance part was there, but it wasn’t particularly memorable. I had issues with the ending because of the force of the hand, and then Kellen just was ok with Wendy doing that at the end. Negative! If I tell you not to do something, don’t do it. That was a real test of love, and Wendy was just selfish.
The read was unbelievable mostly. The grand gestures and big reveal were so cringeworthy. I’m open to reading other books by the author, but if they are like this, I can skip out on them.
so freaking cute & definitely a hidden gem! I don't think this book has gotten enough love on social media. it is a bit of a slow burn but it's only 168 pages long! the love interest kellen is perfect & I truly rooted for him & wendy the entire time! it is available on kindle unlimited!
the beginning of this and the slow burn romance were really really cute but when we got into the medical stuff…
first off when kellen’s condition and everything were first revealed it was like wendy wasn’t sad at all . it was all about the will and death jokes like okay…..
but then the unethical ass decision that was made at the end shocked me cus how we just gonna move past that like it’s okay 😳 that should’ve been handled completely differently or at least addressed more in the story
FIRST... Can we talk about this cover?! That was what immediately drew me to this book and now it is Tanzania Glover's writing that will keep me coming back. I am utterly in love with Wendy and Kellen!! I never wanted this story to end.
Kellen was a customer of Wendy's. Working at her uncle's diner while trying to get her life in order seemed like just the perfect thing. Kellen was persistent though and the banter and flirting between them was just a dream. Even though the lighthearted moments were everything there was a darkness that also surrounded this story, but not once did I lose hope.
Wesleigh Siobahn really brought these characters to life. Initially I was going to eyeball read this but when I saw she was narrating I knew I had to do the audio.
This won't be my last book by Tanzania, and I can't wait to see what else she has in her library. With the perfect balance of heartfelt and sweet Waiting on Wendy is one of those books that will stick with me.
I am so incredibly glad this was my 1st read of 2023!
Wow! Everything about this story was incredible. Even with the heavy topic there was always a beautiful dash of humor so as not to overpower me with sadness. Kellen, not Kel, and Wendy were made for each other. They saw each other even at their worst, but to them it was their best. This story was told in such a way that I was a little fly buzzing around that diner. Excitedly waiting on who would outstubborn whom.
This is going to be a hard act to follow, but if this is any indication of how my reading is going this year, I am super excited! I could definitely see this on the big screen. It's perfection! Round of applause to Tanzania Glover!
Representation: black romance, anxiety, panic attacks, chronic illness
Thoughts: * i was an advanced readers copy of this book in exchange for an honest review* this book, story, novel… whatever you want to call it was perfect… absolutely perfect. i don’t even know if i can put all my thoughts into words at the moment. This story was heartbreaking, funny, irritating, and loving all in on book. this was a princess and the frog retelling that i didn’t know i needed. I LOVED these two and loved them together but i loved them so much as individuals also. I loved learning about Wendy because i related to her so much when it came to her mental health. Learning about what started her anxiety made me look back into my life and at where my anxiety could have come from. I also loved seeing the growth of Wendy as character and a woman. I loved Kellen so much. the patience this man had was amazing. he truly was a real ass man for not only wanting to protect wendy but do anything he could to take care of her. Learning about his heart condition crushed me but we got to see so many conversations surrounding death that many people dont talk about. the chemistry that was built between these two was *chefs kiss* so damn good. and the spicy was great too, but you know a book is good when you more worried about the plot than the spicy lol I love Wendy and Kellen so much and i truly believe they were meant for one another.
This story never really picked up for me. I didn’t care for or relate to any of the characters or the issues they were going through. The entire “love story” just seemed artificial to me. The book cover is beautiful and the story idea is very promising but it fell flat during the execution.
Kellen and Wendy’s journey to HEA was an interesting tale. The first half of the book captured my attention and kept me intrigued up to a point. This book is a slow burn and I felt the story lost a bit of stream in the second half of the book; however, it was a cute story.
Maybes it’s because I’m in a book slump while typing this but I just did not find it enjoyable. ***Spoilers*** I get that she loved him but to blatantly ignore that he didn’t want this operation is really fucked up.
You probably saw me having a conniption fit break down over this book in my stories this week because my heart was in my THROAT. I was so stressed. The blurb said he was terminally ill but all the reviews said it was cute so I was willing to risk it.
Y’all I loved this story. Loved. It had me anxious. It had me biting my fingernails off because I did not know how we were about to pull a happy ending off for Kellen and Wendy. They firm this slow burn friendship to relationship over months when Kellen comes into the diner where she works and becomes her regular. And all along this man is dying of a heart condition that requires a heart transplant. It felt like EVERYTIME there was hope, it got shot down and I was for sure they were not going to have a happy ending. It was gut wrenching to hear them find joy and happiness and then have to talk about him dying and his final wishes and wills and I was crying. And Glover keeps us on the hook until the last….10 pages?? I was STRESSED. But a happy ending occurs and I had to read some mindless smut after this because my heart had been knocked around enough for one day.
I think some readers may be upset by Wendy not following Kellen’s wishes at the climax of the story, but from personal experience, it’s easier to agree to those wishes when their death seems like an eventuality and not something happening in front of your eyes. So I got it. And my heart hurt even more for Wendy having to make those decisions. But he lives!!! I promise he lives!
This was a special beautiful kind of self inflicted torture. It’s been a little while since I got worked up like this. But it is more then worth it! I absolutely love Glover’s writing style she is my ole faith, go to, when I’m in a slump or just don’t know what to read, so I usually squirrel away her books for a rainy day but I absolutely couldn’t put this one off. She is so adept at giving an in-depth perspective on health conditions, mental health issues, and neurodivergent behaviors. It’s an art the way she handles them with such care. It’s not for shock value it’s clearly for representation. I loved the journey. I loved the tears, the suspense, the love, the humor, and the heartache. I loved this book.
3.5/5 this was a very cute book that deals well with illness. i love wendy and kellen they are adorable! sometimes i feel like the story was a lil fast-paced but it’s a short book and with the context it actually makes sense so i’ll let it slide. i think they balance each other very well and i really liked the ending!
Such a sweet read!! It felt like I was being told a story by a best friend. I loved the character development and love story of Kellen and Wendy. Definitely recommend this novella to add to your list! ✨❤️
This book had me gasping, giggling, blushing, crying, and crossing my legs. It had a nice and steady build that was definitely worth the anticipation. Definitely one of my favs so far.
This was such a sweet story! The characters had great chemistry! I don’t think I’ve read many slow burn romances, but this was slow burn done right! I also appreciated that there was anxiety and chronic illness representation. And just look at this cover!😍
There was a decision that the main character made at the end that really upset me, even though it was understandable, but I see why it was necessary for the story. I would’ve enjoyed the ending more if that decision was handled differently though. But, overall I enjoyed this a lot and will be reading more from Tanzania Glover in the future!
Such a nice slow burn romance, with mental health rep, anxiety rep, and chronic illness rep.
I was in the mood for a light short and fluffy sweet romance and that is what I got in Waiting on Wendy. It's not overly complicated and some of the aspects of the story were a bit over the top but it was definitely what I was looking for.
It was really cute watching Wendy and Kellen's love story unfold and Tanzania Glover definitely had me going there for a second (iykyk😭)
Overall, this was a really cute and solid love story that I really enjoyed.
TW/CW: -chronic illness -anxiety disorder/panic attacks -discussions of death/dying -discussions of DV -sexual harassment -sexism in the workplace
Tropes: -Black Luxury -Alpha man with cinnamon roll tendencies -Slowish Burn -strangers to flirty friends to lovers
Let me start by saying ! I loved this book It was so sweet and so cute. Wendy and Kellen were amazing protagonists.
So Wendy is a waitress at her sleazy uncles diner, and she’s highkey over working for him and dealing with annoying men that come in the diner. But she really wants to buy the diner and make it a hot brunch spot in Chicago. Enter Kellen, he comes in one day and immediately has Wendy’s attention, she describes him as Tallish Dark and Handsome (TDH). But TDH seems a lil sad so in an out of character moment for Wendy she tells him whatever is bothering him is going to be okay. That one line sets their story in motion and Kellen comes in everyday waiting for Wendy (get it hahah). However Kellen has a BIG SECRET… he doesn’t have much time left to live but for Wendy he is willing to wait forever
I loved how sweet and DEDICATED Kellen was to getting Wendy. He was so confident, and so willing to genuinely pay her a compliment and boost her self esteem. He was such an alpha guy but without the asshole tendencies. Like 100% book BF material. And I loved the build up of their relationship and all the flirty banter this was a super cute story but it does deal with some very serious issues surrounding anxiety mental health, and chronic illness. Please if you pick up read with care.
I only took off a star because I wanted it to be LONGER, and the ending I didn’t like it all the way it felt a little rushed and the decisions made by Wendy were a lil…. Interesting you have to read to see why it kinda rubbed me the wrong way but I see where she’s coming from just the execution was missing something IMO BUT still a great story!
I 100% recommend this book you will get caught up in the world of Wendy and Kellen 🫶🏽
I was really enjoying this story in the first half. It had pacing I prefer, and I was so certain this would be a 5 star read. Although my enjoyment would make it a higher rating, there were instances that made me uncomfortable and prevented a higher rating.
Initially, I was intrigued by both Wendy and Kellen. Wendy had endured a lot in life and that made her hesitant. Especially with struggling from a panic disorder. She has a lot of insecurities but she knows what she wants career wise and she is determined to get it. Kellen is introduced as very polite and considerate. He is sad the first time they ever meet, but over time he shows his own determination in waiting on Wendy, and she begins to see the fun and teasing side of him when he comes along to the diner she works at. It made their dynamic really interesting. I struggle reading any type of romance unless it is in fantasy so this was something that had me captivated. And there were so many moments when I related to Wendy and it just endeared the story to me.
However, I wish it had been kept as solely a romance, because the direction the story took was uncomfortable. When Wendy finds out about Kellen having HMC, it gets completely swept under the rug when she finds out all her dreams will come true because of Kellen financially. She’s actually the happiest we have yet to see her in the novel. Before that she had only agreed to a date after being jealous, and then is upset with him for ghosting her after their date because he finally realized how he couldn’t give her a future, and then she finds out the truth and they’re suddenly in a full-on relationship. She really never seems that upset about him dying until the big ending of the novel. Of which was so inappropriate. I wish it had come to fruition in another way because it really was not okay at all.
It surprised me by how much my feelings changed. I loved them as characters and the slowburn of the romance, before questionable things happened and they went from like 10 to 100 in such a short time. (Yes, time was limited, but it hardly centered around the reality of his situation beyond joking about it and brushing it off).
Ultimately I enjoyed the beginning and didn’t care for the ending.
TW: mention of child abuse, domestic abuse, physical abuse, drug abuse, sexual harrassment, death of parent, police brutality, racism, ableism, body shaming. Medical content, medical trauma, heart attack, mild racism, surgery.
Rep: Black romance, main character with a panic disorder.
