This addition to the well-received Brazos Theological Commentary on the Bible offers theological exegesis of 1 Samuel. This commentary, like each in the series, is designed to serve the church--providing a rich resource for preachers, teachers, students, and study groups--and demonstrate the continuing intellectual and practical viability of theological interpretation of the Bible.
"The Brazos Commentary offers just the right level of light to make illuminating the word the joy it was meant to be."-- Calvin Miller , author of A Hunger for the Holy and Loving God Up Close
This commentary on First Samuel focuses on the contrast between the Jewish understanding of God and the surrounding pagan culture. The author also discusses how the nation of Israel goes from being a tribe to being a state. This is an interesting lens with which to see the book, and the author does a fine job of explaining it. Unfortunately, the book is too focused on detailed description, and the jargon that goes with it, at times missing the bigger picture. But, it was still an interesting and worthwhile read.
Overall a good commentary. Broad range of source material, although not terribly deep. Good narrative flow and not bogged down in details like most commentaries. Though it does have its share of (mostly non-exegetical) rabbit trails.
