Rating this book is as difficult as reading it. Its content cannot be described as enjoyable, but what kept me going was its purpose. I would not look for literary value in something that is called a “report”.
This report is the work of the National Commission on the Disappearance of Persons created by the newly elected president, Raúl Alfonsin, in December 1983. Its purpose was to investigated the “desaparecidos” and other human rights violations that happened during the previous military dictatorship (1976-1983).
The first part of the book contains the description of all the known illegal detention centres in Argentina: their location, the buildings’ description and the military service they belonged to. All these centres were identified with the help of people that were illegally detained there. Some of them were demolished and some of them were still being used for different purposes. The report explains the way victims were arrested in their homes or in public places. Most of the times the number of the people carrying on such an operative vastly exceeded the number of people being placed under detention. Nobody was safe from the repressive forces. It was enough for one’s name to be found in a subversive’s agenda for that person to be kidnapped and tortured. These forced disappearances affected all layers of society. The “desaparecidos” were workers, students, lawyers, journalists and religious figures.
The report is backed by fragments of the testimonies of the witnesses. Many of them end with “….and that was the last time I saw him/her”. I believe books like this should be on everyone’s reading list. By reading them, we can all become more empathic and learn that we should respect other groups of people and their opinions.
All I could think while reading was how painful it must have been both for the people working for CONADEP to listen to all the testimonies and for the victims that had to remember this painful part of their past. The huge amount of work that the members of CONADEP put in, was described in the last chapter. Although the commission had limited time and resources, they managed to create a comprehensive report and put together files to be used in bringing the culprits to justice. The work of the commission was supported by several international organizations, by the Argentine people and by local organizations such as Grandmothers of Plaza de Mayo.

October 7, 2023doloroso de leer pero en el contexto actual de argentina, donde tantos perdieron la memoria que juraron mantener, me parece necesario en mi labor como ciudadana de esta hermosa república tener presente los hechos que sucedieron hace no muchos años. quién no aprende de su historia esta condenado a repetirla.

Curiosa edición española de un documento histórico. "Nunca más: Informe de la Comisión Nacional por la Desaparición de Personas" es un auténtico descenso a los infiernos desatados en Argentina durante la dictadura que asoló el país entre 1976 y 1983. Fue la base documental que utilizó el fiscal Julio César Strassera durante el Juicio a las Juntas (1985), que culminó con la condena de los jerarcas militares responsables de miles de muertes, torturas, secuestros y desapariciones forzadas.

Sobering. Extremely detailed and comprehensive with testimony from survivors. Some of the worst atrocities ever committed by humans against others, the general(s) responsible eventually prosecuted for genocide and crimes against humanity.
Cannot be said to be enjoyable, yet invaluably insightful if wanting an understanding of conditions within such facist military dictatorships, and their effects on individuals and families of los desaparecidos.

Un libro tan doloroso como necesario para todxs lxs argentinxs.
Muchas veces tuve que frenar la lectura o intercalarla con otro libro para descansar la mente de tanto horror (y eso que no soy fácilmente impresionable) y entonces, para qué seguir leyéndolo? Porque lo que no se recuerda se repite y no podemos permitirnos repetir esta historia. Nunca más.

Actualmente estoy leyendo este libro para conocer más sobre la historia de mi país durante la dictadura militar autodenominada "proceso de reorganización nacional" que ilegalmente gobernó el país. Lo que realmente me llama la atención sobre el informe es la condición de vida de los desaparecidos, que estaban ilegalmente detendidos, sin exceptuar que miles de ellos fueron asesinados de forma atroz y enterrados como NN, quemados o incluso arrojados en el Río de la Plata. Además analiza el numeo de centros clandestinos de detención dispersados sobre el ancho del país.
Currently I´m reading this book to know more about my own country while the militar dictatorship selfdenominated "national reorganization process" was illegaly ruling Argentina. The thing that really calls me the attetion about this report is the life condition of the dissapeared people that were in illegal detention, without excepting that thousand of them were brutally murdered and buried like NN´s, burned or even thrown into the Rio de la Plata. It also analize the number of clandestine detention centers spread over the country.

De más está decir lo fuerte que es leer este informe.
Pero en lo que no pude dejar de pensar en todo el tiempo que me llevó leerlo fue en que hoy en día si podemos acceder a toda esa información es gracias a todas esas víctimas que, después de haber pasado por todo lo que pasaron, no dudaron en colaborar para el armado del informe dando su testimonio y en muchos casos teniendo que volver a los lugares donde vivieron cosas horribles. Mis respetos eternos a ellos.
Y hoy más que nunca, nunca más!

June 30, 2025Es muy fuerte, tuve que leer salteado porque me revolvía el estómago pensar que todo esto pasó de verdad. Obviamente ya conocía una gran parte, pero leer testimonios es tremendo. Quería leerlo porque es una parte importante de nuestra historia y quien no conoce su historia está condenado a repetirla, ya saben, pero por favor, qué dolor.
No lo califico porque se siente fuera de lugar, para mí, calificar un libro así.

Leerlo genera un dolor inmenso.. pero no mayor al que pasaron ellos, sus familias y allegados.
La lectura de este libro debería estar en los planes de historia de los colegios secundarios.. todos los argentinos deberíamos leer nuestra historia, para que la memoria sea explícita, para que el nunca más sea un decreto colectivo.

Un libro minucioso, detallado y terrorífico. Hasta ahora es uno de los pocos libros que me afectó física, psicológica y emocionalmente. Es un libro más que indispensable para los argentinos: para conocer nuestra oscura historia nacional, para no repetirla y para no olvidarla.

Es un libro sobre evidencia y la defensa de Jesucristo, un muy buen libro para regalarlo a una persona que tenga sus dudas o que observes qué es agnóstico, podría aclarar ese panorama incierto en su perspectiva sobre el cristianismo.
