The mysterious presence of Jesus haunts the whole story of Acts. Jesus is announced as King and Lord, not as an increasingly distant memory but as a living and powerful reality, a person who can be known and loved, obeyed and followed, a person who continues to act within the real world. We call the book "The Acts of the Apostles," but we should think of it as "The Acts of Jesus (II)." These studies from Tom Wright help us to do so, and to see how Jesus' acts through the apostles inform our acts today.
N. T. Wright is the former Bishop of Durham in the Church of England (2003-2010) and one of the world's leading Bible scholars. He is now serving as the chair of New Testament and Early Christianity at the School of Divinity at the University of St. Andrews. He has been featured on ABC News, Dateline NBC, The Colbert Report, and Fresh Air, and he has taught New Testament studies at Cambridge, McGill, and Oxford universities. Wright is the award-winning author of Surprised by Hope, Simply Christian, The Last Word, The Challenge of Jesus, The Meaning of Jesus (coauthored with Marcus Borg), as well as the much heralded series Christian Origins and the Question of God.
I worked through this book with my Sunday school class the past several months and we loved it! It is approachable and manageable with busy schedules and it gave me a much deeper understanding and appreciation for Acts. There’s a perfect mix of questions about the text, context, and how we can apply the message to our own lives. Will definitely get more books from this series!
NT Wright is one of my favorite theologians, and his book on the study of the Acts of the Apostles truly lives up to my expectations. In this work, Wright offers profound insights into the early Christian church and explores the theological significance of the events and messages found within Acts. His detailed analysis not only deepens our understanding of the text but also connects it to contemporary issues of faith and community. Overall, this study is both enlightening and thought-provoking, making it a valuable addition to anyone's theological library.NT Wright, one of my favourite theologians, and this book/study of Acts doesn't disappoint.
Overall a great dive into Acts. I especially enjoyed the prayer prompts, the deeper dive into historical context and the notes that accompanied most of the lessons.
N.T Wright draws out some interesting tid bits to get you thinking and reflecting which I find helpful as I continue to grow in my faith.
This is at least the fourth Acts study I have done. I have done Lucado, Christians on the Move, Disciples 1, possibly another Disciples. This was outstanding! The best by far. N.T. Wright's commentaries were excellent. Discussion questions were wonderful. I learned so much more from this study. Our pastor pointed out similarities in Peter, who disappears and is not heard from again, and Jesus. Wright gives parallels with Paul and Jesus. Wonderful, wonderful images. I feel like I really got to know Paul in this study. I highly recommend it and would love to do more Wright studies.
A study guide for the book of Acts. It serves as a companion to the Acts for Everyone commentary series; it can be used on its own, but some of the questions will seem a bit strange if you have not considered the commentary.
It may take some time to get used to the format, but once you do, it remains consistent throughout. Some questions are information based; others are more probing and application-based. There's a good mix of questions for a study group.
What I Liked As a brief, easy-to-understand study guide on the book of Acts, this is nice.
What I Didn't Like This is supposed to be a standalone from the Acts for Everyone book, but it really isn't. On its own, it holds barely any meat at all - and it references many things from Acts for Everyone. It's more like 10 more study questions per lesson from Acts for Everyone.
