A lovely little book about letters - writing and receiving. Most of the examples were letters written by women - which was expected as this was published by Victorian magazine. Of course, anyone would enjoy the prose and poetry of Jane Austen and Emily Dickinson.
I am considering an epistolary writing project, so I’ve been very drawn to books that relate to writing letters lately. This one has actually been on my shelf for years- I picked up on a whim about 7 years ago. But this is the first time I actually read it. And I’m so glad I did. I loved all of the explanations about why letter writing is important, how to write different types of letters, and reading the letters of famous historical figures like Virginia Woolf and Jane Austen. If you are thinking about resuming the art of writing personal letters, I would recommend this book as a source of inspiration.
I already enjoy writing letters (and receiving them, too), so I didn't need convincing, but this book helped me again see the value of this craft/ministry. It also let me peek into the correspondence of famous people like Jane Austen, Emily Dickenson, Virginia Woolf, and others. It also gives some helpful hints on how to write certain kinds of letters and cards, ie. condolence, declining an invitation, congratulations, etc. A beautiful, enjoyable, and helpful book.
This book is great if you want to get into writing letters! Its inspirering and helps you to write different types of letters for both casual and formal occasions. I have to add, although its beautifully written, in the first couple chapters or so i found it releated more or less the same things in different words, i didnt really mind though.
I enjoyed the examples of letters from historic figures as well as the fun ideas given. The book is written in prose with a story interwoven in the style, etiquette and ideas.
