Post Listen Review: Listening to this was torturous. I vowed not to skip any audiobooks on the library shelf so I could hear them all but it was a struggle to finish this one. As I was listening I realized it isn't just a bad story but the people in it are awful people. I state my case below.
Why Sonny (the main female protagonist) is an awful girlfriend: She contemplates her "coral pink toenails and her life". That is someone way too shallow to hang around. She plays into strict female stereotypes because she takes hours to dress but makes up for it by "cooking delilcious meals for her man, keeps an immaculate kitchen and always does the dishes". Getting rid of that kind of stereotype is what the Seventies were for. She is not a believable character because she is described as both brainy and ditsy yet all her actions indicate she is ditsy and ditsy. Yet she supposedly graduated Magna Cum Laude. She is insanely jealous and borderline psychotic. Sonny gets mad at her "man" Mac for being late off of a fifteen hour flight to Rome and then goes off to do something she ALREADY HAD PLANNED! I would drop her then and there, no matter how "beautiful" she is supposed to be. She gets mad at Mac because her ploy to "flaunt her naked left hand pointedly" to get him to propose doesn't work. Also there is something wrong with her physically. At one point her boyfriend is watching her walk and thinks,"the twitch of her butt was natural and beautiful". If I see someone's butt twitching I think they have some kind of private itch that needs to be taken care of in private. She is insanely jealous. She gets mad because Mac invites Alley, the actress who doesn't act, to come to his house because she got a death threat and Sonnny gets mad because Mac must like her for inviting her over. She also won't let Mac find the missing actress who doesn't act alone despite the fact that Sonny was almost killed the night before.
Why Mac is a terrible private eye: He has to ask Sonny if a woman that is clearly lying is lying because "you're a woman, Sonny". He also forces Sonny to break into a house, rifle through stuff and escape through the doggy door. But see this is all ok because he has, "A nice bottle of champagne" for her. Also, one of the characters, Ron, goes missing and who finds out where he went? Not Mac the private investigator, it's Sonnny. Who finds out who has been stalking the actress? Mac's assistant. When Mac finds a body buried under rubble does he check for a pulse, try to get help, call an ambulance? Nope. He checks to see if the expensive watch on the body IS STILL WORKINIG.
Why Alley is not really an actress: For starters she doesn't act in the book. She attends Cannes, cooks, runs arounds, wallows in self pity and does not ever act, even when she is trying to lie, Sonny figures her out.
How you know they stalker person is evil: The stalker cuts up expensive clothing. And despite the fact that there are multiple murders, the thing that frightens the characters the most in this is the fact that expensive dresses are now not wearable.
Why I hope there are no more Elizabeth Adler books at the library: Because I will have to listen to the exploits of these awful, shallow, fantastically rich and totally self-centered annoying characters.

You know how in the typical PI/adventure book they are racing around solving cases and facing dangers and somehow have time for a little romance, but definitely not for anything else? In this one, even when they've agreed to keep the damsel in distress safe from the imminent threats of the bad guys, they find time to make complex dinners, relax and watch the sunset, and have a long lunch at some out of the way restaurant.
The suspension of belief quotient is especially high with regards to travel time. The author implies that it is a matter of a few minutes to drive from Malibu to Marina del Rey (54 in current traffic) or from Malibu to Bel Air (at least 45 min)... and that's one way! Even more unbelievable, at the drop of a hat, they fly off to Rome or Paris, have lots of adventures and are back in CA in a day or 2. It takes me that long to pack for such a trip!

De Malibu, Com Amor é mais uma viagem mágica através das palavras de uma autora capaz de proporcionar as mais belas descrições que, facilmente, envolvem o leitor em cenários edílicos fazendo-o suspirar pelo seu próprio lugar de sonho.
Fortemente influenciado pelo género policial e com dois protagonistas excepcionais, este livro apresenta-nos vários cenários de acção onde a paixão e o crime são predominantes na procura do único tipo de felicidade que o dinheiro não pode comprar.
Mac e Sunny são dois protagonistas extraordinários e um dos pontos fortes da nossa história. Ele é sério devido ao seu trabalho, mas sabe descontrair nos momentos certos e com a companhia certa, Sunny. Quando se trata desta mulher, Mac chega mesmo a ter um apetecível toque de romantismo que rivaliza com a sua astucia, inata, para resolver crimes que envolvem os clientes mais exigentes. Ela, por seu lado, é um coração muito doce que se derrete totalmente na companhia de Mac, no entanto nem sempre é fácil lidar com a independência exigida a um detective a não ser, evidentemente, que Sunny opte por se tornar útil na sua agência passando assim a controlar de perto clientes belas como Allie. Juntos, Sunny e Mac, são mais fortes, mais atentos, compreendendo questões mais sensíveis sobre as quais um homem nem sempre reflecte. Poderiam, de facto, ser o casal perfeito não fosse o risco que as suas vidas correm durante uma investigação, suspeita e repleta de pontas soltas, que tende a tornar-se muito perigosas para a vida de ambos isso e, claro está, uma cadela impertinente que promete roubar a paixão e sensualidade da vida de ambos.
Algo que poderá surpreender aqueles que anteriormente já tiveram o prazer de folhear esta autora é o facto deste livro, em particular, se dedicar mais ao género policial, com um bom nível se suspense, assim como às diversas personagens e a um mistério, enredo em particular, no qual os principais intervenientes não estão emocionalmente envolvidos de início. De Malibu para Roma, de Roma para França – passando pela Califórnia – esta história é bastante dedicada às personagens secundárias, Ron e Allie, que têm um papel extremamente relevante sendo, também elas, verdadeiras protagonistas singulares paralelamente ao casal de detectives que, após uma breve pesquisa por curiosidade, verifiquei fazerem parte de outros romances já publicado pela autora, o que faz todo o sentido.
Dedicando uma boa parte da história ao lado menos positivo da fama e às diversas dificuldades emocionais causadas pela falta de privacidade, a autora sobrevaloriza sentimentos retirados dos prazeres mais simples sendo esta, na minha perspectiva, uma das principais mensagens da história.
Ideal para proporcionar á imaginação do leitor as férias de sonho, através da beleza do meio envolvente, e com muita acção, intrigas e segredos, que contrastam com os pacíficos cenários e a vida intensa dos seus intervenientes, esta é uma narrativa que se adapta a um público variado que deseje passar boas horas de entretenimento e descontracção entre os desígnios do amor e a resolução de um crime quase, quase perfeito.

Perdida na paradisíaca costa californiana, abandonada à popularidade da fama e do dinheiro, Malibu é uma terra rica em personalidades importantes e excêntricas. Talvez por isso, não é surpresa nenhuma quando o crime conjugal e político serve de mote a uma série de viagens tanto belas quanto arrojadas. O perigo está à espreita, e esta recente dupla de detectives não logrará a meios para descobrir o verdadeiro culpado de uma sucessão de infortúnios pessoais.
«De Malibu, Com Amor» trata-se de mais um romance simples e algo natural de uma autora que já habituou o seu público a descortinar, desvendar, toda uma série de cenários idílicos e profundamente inebriantes. Seguindo as passadas de um casal de protagonistas ousado e eficiente, o leitor vê-se subitamente sugado para as mais belas e acarinhadas paisagens, assim como para o tumultuoso interior, íntimo, de uma relação pública pontuada pela infidelidade e pela perseguição anónima.
Elizabeth Adler é mestra na arte do policial soft, com laivos de romance, conferindo uma certa atmosfera de suspense, de mistério, que em muito agracia as suas histórias. Perseguições, conflitos de interesse, promessas quebradas, mortes suspeitas, no imaginário de Adler existe de tudo um pouco, e a forma como a autora consegue conjugar, com perícia, todas as afluências, todos os pequenos e grandes pormenores é, simplesmente, maravilhosa

I tend to really like Elizabeth Adler's novels, especially in recent years, but this one didn't do it for me. Halfway through I felt like I was totally lost, and the excitement of the story was gone.

Second book by this author, which I would classify as chick lit mysteries. I hope there is not another one in audiobooks. They are okay, but I am way beyond needing all the characters to be drop dead gorgeous.

★★★✩✩ Not a lot of depth to these characters, but I liked it enough to continue with the series. Pretty good narration by Julie Briskman on the audiobook.

Tomei conhecimento deste livro através da divulgação de outros blogues. Os que lêem as opiniões que formulo, sabem que dou primazia à capa e à sinopse e ambas agradaram-me soberanamente. Aliás, as capas portuguesas desta autora são simplesmente “de comer e chorar por mais”.
Os capítulos pequenos permitem uma leitura rápida, mas confesso que demorei um pouco mais do que habitual. Pura e simplesmente, por preguiça.
Adorei as descrições leves sobre os locais geográficos paradísiacos (Malibu, França, Itália…) e as personagens. Já tive o prazer de ir a Paris, mas também adorava ir até Itália e Los Angeles, neste caso, Malibu (ok, se pudesse, viajaria para todo o lado! Quem não o faria, não é?) e comprovar com os meus próprios olhos o glamour de que tanto falam.
Gostei da relação de Mac Reilly e Sunny Alvarez, que apesar de romântica, tem as suas picardias bem realçadas. Sunny espera, de uma forma obsessivamente engraçada, que Mac se decida a avançar na relação, mas neste caso, o ditado popular “Quem espera sempre alcança” não se aplica. Pelo contrário, “Quem espera, desespera” assenta que nem uma luva.
O casal vê-se envolvido numa trama, na qual também figuram, Allie Ray, a “namoradinha da América”, o seu marido, Ron Perrin e a mulher misteriosa que aponta a arma a Mac. Adorei as personagens Ron e Allie e notei no blogue “As Histórias de Elphaba” que a administradora referiu que “após uma breve pesquisa por curiosidade, verifiquei fazerem parte de outros romances já publicados pela autora, o que faz todo o sentido.”. Isto ainda me deixou mais curiosa. A vocês, não?
Outro ponto que me fez gostar ainda mais da autora foi o facto de não rondar apenas os investigadores principais, Mac e Sunny. Ao longo do livro, foi alternando, entre os capítulos, os passos de todas as personagens, tendo o cuidado de não revelar em demasia.
O estilo da escrita da autora é descritiva q.b., dotada de diálogos cómicos, atrevidos, sérios, com suspense e alguns que nos fazem pensar na nossa existência. Estes últimos, passo a explicar melhor. A vida de uma pessoa famosa não é caracterizada unicamente pela fachada de “conto de fadas” que fazem questão de transparecer ao público. Tão depressa pode ser repleta da brilhantina do sucesso, como do vazio, pelo qual, a solidão de uma vida sem qualquer privacidade é responsável. E a determinada altura, por desespero, acredito que as figuras públicas ponderem sobre questões existenciais e prefiram o anonimato, como se verifica na história.
Houve um aspecto que me intrigou e desiludiu um pouco, ao mesmo tempo. A sinopse refere um assassino e apenas no último terço do livro vemos isso a acontecer. Isso despertou-me a curiosidade, mas houve alturas em que fiquei aborrecida por não ver um maior desenvolvimento desse aspecto. Entendi por que assim foi e admito que o meu desagrado talvez se deva à minha impaciência e curiosidade desmedidas. Vou pegar nas palavras da Isabel, de uma conversa que tivemos, este romance tem ainda uma componente que o torna mais desejável que não se vê muito nos seus outros romances: a investigação e suspense.
Gostei do desfecho da história. Lembrei-me agora da máxima “tudo está bem quando acaba bem”. Ora, não vou revelar o final, mas embora não tenha sido pesaroso para as personagens principais, é óbvio que algumas não escaparam incólumes e intocáveis. E mais, não digo.

Gostei do desfecho da história. Lembrei-me agora da máxima “tudo está bem quando acaba bem”. Ora, não vou revelar o final, mas embora não tenha sido pesaroso para as personagens principais, é óbvio que algumas não escaparam incólumes e intocáveis. E mais, não digo.

Em "De Malibu, Com Amor" o detective privado, mas famoso, Mac Reilly e a sua namorada Sunny Alvarez encabeçam a acção, assim como os seus respectivos chiens, Pirate e Tesoro, que tal como os donos, são o oposto de cada, não tendo nenhum ponto em comum, à excepção do casal cujo amor é palpável à distância.
Sendo a minha estreia nesta autora, penso que não poderia ter escolhido melhor!
Esta obra é uma mescla de emoções, que cativa desde a primeira página.
Com romance e policial... com sensualidade e aventura... com ciúme e carinho... "De Malibu, Com Amor" torna qualquer dia chuvoso, num radioso!
Elizabeth Adler prima pela excelência na sua escrita, sendo ela bastante descritiva e pormenorizada quando necessária, e sucinta e directa ao ponto quando requerida.
Fiquei bastante impressionada com a escrita da autora, pois além de saber cativar o leitor com a sua eloquência, também o faz com a sua imaginação fértil e recheada, em que nada acontece por acaso, e tudo tem uma finalidade distinta.
São raras as romancistas que conseguem surpreender-me, mas Adler, fê-lo!
Sunny e Mac são personagens com as quais nos identificamos prontamente. São reais, bem estruturadas, sólidas e de rápido fascínio por parte do leitor, que desde cedo torce pelo seu final feliz!
A química existente entre estes dois é "sentida" pelo leitor!
Entretanto, o casal é intercalado por uma série de personagens como Allie e Perrin, que com as suas particularidades e acções/decisões invulgares, acrescem riqueza à trama.
Elizabeth Adler descreve o mundo de Hollywood, dos famosos, das estrelas, de pés bem assentes na terra, e, através das suas personagens, elucida o leitor sobre a não tão fantástica vida das celebridades.

c2008: FWFTB: vineyards, France, actress, husband, missing. If you are having one of 'those days' eg a bad hair day/week/month - do yourself a favour and do not read this book. Wait until you are in a good place. All the characters are impossibly handsome and impossibly charming. I think that the synopsis is a little misleading in that there was not too much involving the 'beaches of Mexico' and I'm not sure when they were ever 'one step ahead of an actress who wants nothing more to get lost'. The edition I read was titled One Night in Malibu so perhaps there was a difference between the USA and UK versions.

Loved it! It's the first in the Mac Reilly series and I actually started off by reading the newest (3rd installlment, "It All Began in Monte Carlo") and was hooked. These books make me want to travel and this one in particular made me want to taste the delicious foreign dishes described. Now I'm reading the second book in the series, "There's Something About St. Tropez" and loving it as well. I'd recommend this to anyone who loves a good mystery and can enjoy traveling vicariously through the characters.

Gosto muito de Elizabeth Adler, mas este livro simplesmente não conseguiu captar o meu interesse, não me prendeu. A história em si é coerente mas penso que os capítulos são demasiado curtos e pouco desenvolvidos e na verdade, por vezes demasiado banais, tal como alguns personagens.

I couldn’t finish this book, unfortunately it just didn’t work for me.
I picked it up from the romance section, then discovered it was a romance mystery... this isn’t too much of an issue, but chapter to chapter I discovered I was getting confused as one chapter was all romance, sunshine and light and the chapter after would turn mystery and dark... as amazing as it sounds, I just couldn’t get into it and reading each chapter became a chore for me, I was having to force myself to sit and read this book and that for me isn’t enjoyable so I’ve given up. Whether I come back to it or not is a different topic.

Maybe I need to change my rating system?
I enjoyed this book but nothing to write home about? It kept my interest while I was doing other tasks.
I will say I figured out the murderer right away, wasn’t that hard.
I did appreciate the jetting around from LA to Italy & France. I think that’s just as much a character & part of the story than the actual characters.
Although the female main characters obsession with getting her bf to agree to marriage is a bit nuanced. Might speak more about the time this book was set/written in the 00’s. 15yrs makes a difference socially.

Прекрасна книга која ја прочитав во еден здив. Книга за приватниот истражувач Мек Рајли кој живее во богат кварт во Малибу кога во соседната куќа на богаташот Рон Перин се слуша врисок на една жена. Мек оди во неговата куќа и се соочува со една вознемирена црвенокоса убавица кој го држи пиштолот директно вперен во него... Мек едвај го избегнува куршумот, но ова е почеток на неговата детективска работа, роман полн со возбудувања, неразрешени убиства, љубов и интриги. Оценка 5

I read these in English (usually I read in french) and it was a really good read! A lot of nice descriptions and different locations, it made me feel like being in a road trip movie. Also I tried some of the recipes and it was so good! If you like investigations (the main character is a P.I.), travel and some romance, give it a read!
Oh and good surprise to discover there is other books with Mac Reilly (4 in total). I will order them right now.

I'm still continuing through the "A" authors at the library. The book started out fairly cheesy and sounds in tone like it could be published in the 80's. It wasn't a cozy mystery, but it was light and breezy in style. I ended up enjoying the way the story switched perspectives between characters throughout the novel. I'd read another of Adler's books, even though they're published about 20 years late.

The writing was OK but the story was all over the place. I am sure that it would come together by the end but I just couldn't stay interested.
I have read other books by this author and enjoyed them but I think I will skip this series.

Private investigator, Mac Reilly, hears a scream while walking on the beach and goes to investigate. There is a woman with a gun who aims at him but missses. Suddenly he is involved with movie stars, deceptions and women in France. Typical P.I. novel with Hollywood themes.

I listened to this as an audio book and found myself constantly redirecting my attention back to the story. I wasn’t crazy about any of the characters except the dogs. I was given book 2 as a freebie so I wanted to read this one first. I will go ahead and listen to book 2 and hope I like it better.

Pretty fun book. It was a bit silly. Like the actual detective didn't do much but his girlfriend and everyone else around him did which I found funny. I was definitely hooked on the storyline enough to keep reading.

Ce livre est une catastrophe. Un mix de mauvais roman de détective privé et d'Harlequin. Et pourquoi faire de la blonde du détective une greluche princesse qui tient à porter des botillons à talons hauts Manolo quand elle a une entorse au pied et qu'ils partent courir après un meurtrier?!

If you like detailed descriptions about every single meal the characters eat, this is the book for you! The main storyline was decent, but I could have done without all the food references!

This book was very engaging...captured my interest right of the bat. Loved the characters and the setting in Europe was another plus.
