The Exiles Trilogy #2

The Faceless Moon

Rate this book
Luminous spawn of the Moon Father creep across kingdoms.

Yet neither Mei nor Iggy, still separated, realise the depth of the threat – nor their role in stopping it.

One, however is aware. Thorn, the imposter seated upon Nasaru’s throne, moves his pieces to manipulate them.

Thankfully, not all who take an interest in the siblings harbour such dark intent, and as their paths start to converge, welcome allies appear. Mei is joined by a merchant, Coral Sorcerer and Greyshield on a voyage to the Raging Isle, seeking a precious commodity to locate her brother.

And while across the land Rokura still protects Iggy from old and new threats alike, the trail of his ever-elusive quarry continues to fade. Worse, a betrayal will soon cast doubt upon everything the Greyshield once held sacred.

In desperation, Anyo has turned to Binya the corpse-singer.

Despite her promise to divine the Sothalic’s location, there is a cost – a pact with the unknown. Even so, the Beggar Prince now knows that if he fails to discover the legendary blade, his lands and those beyond will be smothered in darkness at the hands of the Moon Father.

The Exiles Trilogy is a multi-pov epic fantasy series with a connected story that follows four main characters on their struggles after being exiled from their homes, their loved ones and even their nations too.

Mei was still in search of her brother Iggy, who was banished from their lands. Her journey had taken her far and now, joining with a merchant and a sorcerer as they continued their journey to an island everyone feared, to locate special sand which would help in Mei's search, she wondered if they would succeed. But danger was close.

Meanwhile Rokura was a considerable distance from Mei - neither of them knowing of the other. Rokura was looking after Iggy, accompanying him on his journey to the person who could give him a face. Iggy's power was undiminished - all who witnessed it were stunned. And Anyo was drawing closer to danger on his journey, the corpse-singer by his side, his promises to her sitting badly with him. The vision which caused people to freeze, their eyes vacant and filled with a faceless moon, was not just in one place. What was it? Would Mei ever find Iggy?

The Faceless Moon is the 2nd in the Exiles Trilogy by Aussie Ashley Capes and it has my heart pumping with each different scenario. An excellent read, with well-crafted characters, I'm looking forward to the last in the Trilogy soon. Highly recommended.

With thanks to the author for my digital ARC to read in exchange for an honest review.

I’m always glad to read this author, because even though I’m not a huge fan of past-like settings, I know I’ll enjoy books by this author. This latest is quite enjoyable and entertaining, with all our characters embarking on their own ways, trying to accomplish what they’ve set out to do. This of course ended in a cliffhanger(s), but I actually love them: it makes me eager for the next one! LOL! If you loved the first one, you’ll definitely love this one; it’s even better. Recommend. I was provided a complimentary copy which I voluntarily reviewed.

In a world in which ‘life is a competition’, it’s quite a challenge for kings and other leaders are to serve the people (as they should). Yes, there are times when one needs to choose “the greater good” over individuals; however, there are also times when an individual and his or her contributions to society constitute the greater good. Unfortunately, too many people presume that they themselves are the center of their world and therefore are entitled to choosing themselves over others. Perhaps those selfish people should reconsider exactly what ‘reputation is everything’ truly means as well as whose good graces we should seek.

Some sage advice from the author:
Never give up hope.
Always be aware of the local political climate.
‘There is always a choice’ (make the best one you can).

Sad ’cause it’s all too true:
‘People often blame what they do not understand on convenient targets’

Fave line – we need more people like this:
‘I hardly need a piece of cloth to act with honour.’

May we soon live in a world in which “the Code is for all, or it is for no-one!”.

Next in the series finale in ‘Stars Burning’. Can’t wait to find out how are heroes and heroine fare!

On Kobo (9780645360592, 207 pages; EPub 3 DRM-Free)

The various parties involved continue their quests, occasionally meeting and merging for a while. As with book 1 the 'ending' is a pause, with three separate cliffhangers swaying in the breeze... However just what is at stake is slowly becoming clear(er).

4.5 - Stars

There is a lot going on in these shorter than I'm used to novels. Several different POV's and they appear to slowly be edging closer towards each other. Volume three of this series is shaping up to be very interesting!

Rokura's journey was definitely my favorite in book two but the others are still very interesting as well.

A very good follow up of the first book.

Again we follow stories from the characters we were introduced to in book 1. This book has a few “side quests”, I think you can call them. But important further along the way.

Again the pace is quite high, but again very fun to read.
