"Superficial views of the work of Christ produce superficial human lives." Martyn Lloyd-Jones
Ever since his first sermon in 1925, Martyn Lloyd-Jones consistently emphasized the significance of Christ's sacrifice for our sake.
This new collection of sermons reveals this theme in Lloyd-Jones' classic expository style, showing his gift for combining a warm, personal devotion to Jesus Christ with deep theological insight. His grasp of Scripture still causes the maturest believer to ponder, yet he brings a simplicity of thought to his preaching that even a child can understand and enjoy.
The Cross explains how Christ's crucifixion works for our redemption, and why this even is the cornerstone of the Christian life.
From one of this century's greatest preachers, excellent reading for ministers and anyone seeking a closer walk with Christ. Meditative, easily understandable, and biblically sound.
David Martyn Lloyd-Jones was a Welsh Protestant minister, preacher and medical doctor who was influential in the Reformed wing of the British evangelical movement in the 20th century. For almost 30 years, he was the minister of Westminster Chapel in London. Lloyd-Jones was strongly opposed to Liberal Christianity, which had become a part of many Christian denominations; he regarded it as aberrant. He disagreed with the broad church approach and encouraged evangelical Christians (particularly Anglicans) to leave their existing denominations. He believed that true Christian fellowship was possible only amongst those who shared common convictions regarding the nature of the faith.
Really, really good. Going back to the simplicity and mystery of the cross, expounded so thoroughly but acknowledging we can never plunge its depths. I shall have to read more Martyn Lloyd-Jones. He writes well.
In typical MLJ style, this fine book is both theologically expository and deep in practical application. MLJ was one of the great preachers who made orthodoxy come alive in orthopraxy. In ‘The Cross’ MLJ examines the cross from every angle and perspective and like a finely cut diamond, he turns the cross over and over so we may see the brilliance and beauty of every facet. After reading this book, I am left with a higher view of God and both His holiness and His love. I am left with seeing my Lord and Saviour Jesus Christ high and lifted up and ruling at the right hand of God. And, importantly, I am left with a proper view of myself; a worthless and incapable beggar who’s acts nailed Christ to the cross; a person wholly dependent upon God’s grace and Christ’s perfect righteousness to save. Read this book and drink deeply in the profound truths within. May each reader be conformed, by God’s grace, more into the likeness of Christ, for His glory.
Disappointing. I tabbed more pages that I disagreed with than pages I found inspiring. The God of this book is an inconvenienced accountant finding a bad sum in the Excel sheet, trying to figure out a solution and settling on the last resort. Oh! I know! I’ll kill my Son on the cross! He’s not really up to anything right now. “Do you imagine that God would ever have sent his only begotten son to the cross if he could have forgiven the sin of men in any other way?” What are you TALKING ABOUT??? If He could have?? Any other way?? God has his hands tied by this problem of sin - sorry, Jesus. Guess you’re up. Mocks the beauty, intricacy, and holiness of the real thing. Mocks the concept of an absolute Master of the universe. Ignorant of a world in which Jesus was the ultimate plan by the ultimate Father, the climax of every song ever written, the first Son of every son that will die and find life through the mouth of a hungry grave. Glad I don’t live in God’s last resort like Martyn. I’m throwing hands with this book. Oh and who picks GREY and PURPLE for a book cover??? AHHHHHH. ALSO!!! This book is not EXHAUSTIVE unless by that you mean I want to take a NAP after reading it. It is repetitive, and he barely scratches the surface of “the cross.” I felt like I knew less when I ended than when I started.
An exhaustive and scripturally based look at the Cross of Jesus and compelling work in explaining how the cross is the crux of the Christian faith, the greatest event of history, and the single thing that matters to all of humanity.
A whole book on Galatians 2:20?! Yes please 😊🫡🫡 a couple sermons from Martin Lloyd Jones combined into a book. Themed around the cross. We cannot get enough of the cross. It's not just an act but a supernatural act purchasing salvation and new life.
Super great meditation. New insights of old treasures.
At the end of the day I’d always recommend you get the MLJ app and listen to his sermons rather than reading them. But The fact remains however you consume them MLJ’s sermons are truly anointed Biblical teaching without the distraction of personal anecdote or life example.
A man knowing his Bible intimately and teaching it with passion
Another great book by The Doctor. His presentation of the Cross in the book is full of insights about the meaning and effects of the Cross to the believer. It all springs from the seed of Paul's statement in Galatians 6:14 (But far be it from me to boast except in the cross of our Lord Jesus Christ, by which the world has been crucified to me, and I to the world). Dr Jones mines the depths of this verse to show that this teaches much more than Salvation and how it affects all of the Christian life. This is an excellent read for all Christians. Dr. Jones believes that one of the greatest needs for the Church is for every believer to know , and understand, who they are in Christ. There is so much available in this book I am sure that, in the near future, I will be reading it again.
I had the privilege of reading this book this past week. I sadly cannot give the book the lengthy review that it deserves. Man is this not only an extremely life-giving book but also it is immensely convicting. Every message I've heard or read from Mr. Martyn Lloyd-Jones has been just so Christ-centered. I have been so inspired by this book. I pray to have a heart as devoted to Christ as that displayed here. I hope that everyone can experience this wonderful love. A fantastic aspect of this book is that it delivers exactly what it promises. It takes us to the cross. Those who believe in the cross should make it their entire lives. Then why do we ignore it after our initial belief? Because we simply haven't grasped that we are to live by what happened on the cross in all areas of our life. Christ is the King of every second of our life. I urge every believer to read this book.
I read this wonderful book about 20 years ago and it had a profound effect on me then. Rereading it this Easter I have once again been encouraged and blessed. The author takes Paul’s words in Galatians 6:14 “but God forbid that I should glory, save in the cross of the Lord Jesus Christ, by whom the world is crucified unto me, and I unto the world” and shows the many reasons why Paul and the other apostles indeed did glory in the cross. Filled with scripture to make his point, his arguments are logical and easy to follow. A great book to give to someone who may not yet appreciate the wonders of the cross but definitely a welcome reminder for any Christian. This would have to be one of my favourite books.
The Cross and its impact on our lives in clear, simple and wonderful clarity,
This book clearly articulates Jesus and the Cross in our lives. Written in 1963 but completely relatable to today. It clarifies through questions what I never knew and helped me to see the wondrous beauty of Jesus and what His Cross does for each of us. This is a wonderful book and an even more wonderful message.
I liked it more than I thought I would. It contains 9 sermons about the cross of Christ. The main verse expanded is Galatians 6:14 But may I never boast except in the cross of our Lord Jesus Christ, through which the world has been crucified to me, and I to the world.
Of course, there is more to say about the cross, but the author's love and respect for the cross is contagious.
Excellent book, as every Lloyd-Jones book I've read has been. This is a book of nine powerful sermons put into print form, based on different aspects of Galatians 6:14 "But far be it from me to boast except in the cross of our Lord Jesus Christ, by which the world has been crucified to me, and I to the world." Highly recommended!
Like his preaching, this book by Martyn Lloyd-Jones is about as Christ-focused as they come. Focusing in on Paul’s commands to “boast only in the cross of Christ”, he delivers a master class on why the cross is the centerpiece of the Christian faith. You will be convicted, encouraged, and propelled by this book! Wonderful.
What is a Christian without the cross of Christ? If there's anything that can break him again and again in his devotion to God, it is the cross of Christ. I don't think I will ever read a wonderful work on the cross like this one. MLJ has with the divine grace bestowed on him, expounded the greatness of the cross through this book. It would probably remain as my best read of the author.
I struggled a lot for understand and finish the first chapter, but when I finally made it, the second one was hard too. I push myself to go further because someone push me to read it, and after all I couldn't stay away. I understood the line that the book was following and I was captivated, for me was a revelation. I completely understood the meaning of Christ's sacrifice, the book was essential for my spiritual growth. Also I discover it wasn´t a book, it is a transcription from a preaches, so that's why was hard understand why he plays with the stories.
This is one of the best books I have ever read on understanding the necessity and power of the cross. An absolute must for every Christian wanting to receive encouragement and grounding in their faith! Martyn Lloyd-Jones style is very deep yet very accessible.
The author does an outstanding job explaining the significance of the Cross of Christ. It's not just that Christ died. It is what His death means that matters. This is solid Biblical teaching!
I have read this book twice and as the writer take you to the cross of Christ, my mind cannot grasp God's love in giving us his Son, that through Jesus Christ we have eternal life.
a remarkable, eloquent, and necessary exposition on what it truly means to glory in the cross of Christ and the way that this ought to be the central, defining mark of all who claim Christ Jesus
First sentence: First sentence from the introduction: Can you remember what you were doing when you heard the news that President Kennedy had been assassinated?
Premise/plot: In the fall of 1963, Martyn Lloyd-Jones was preaching a sermon series on Galatians 6:14 which reads, ‘God forbid that I should glory, save in the cross of our Lord Jesus Christ, by whom the world is crucified unto me and I unto the world.’ These sermons have been published in book form as The Cross. Lloyd-Jones did not interrupt his sermon series to address the assassination of President Kennedy, but, it did trouble him and he incorporated it into his next sermon.
The Cross features nine sermons: "The Wondrous Cross," "The Acid Test," "The Wisdom of God," "Love Not the World," "The Triumph of the Cross," "He Is Our Peace," "The Cross of Christ Speaks," "A New Nature," and "Bought Out and Set Free." All nine sermons share a single Scripture verse as their basis. All nine sermons are Christ-centered. All nine sermons include an invitation to unbelievers.
My thoughts: I loved, loved, loved, LOVED rereading Martyn Lloyd-Jones The Cross. I read it during Passion Week and finished up on Good Friday. It is one of those books that you should reread every other year or so. It's just that good. Christians should never tire of the gospel, of the cross. Christians should never be bored or dismissive of the good news. It should humble us and excite us. It should lead to worship and praise. It should lead to repentance and obedience. It should make us want more, more, more of Christ in our lives.
This book contains a series of nine sermons preached by Lloyd-Jones in the autumn of 1963 at Westminster Chapel. Each one comes from Galatians 6:14 where Paul says that his only glory is the cross of Christ. With skill and authority, Lloyd-Jones examines the cross and what it reveals about God, means for His people, and says to a world lost in sin. This book’s powerful focus and content makes it both exceedingly helpful and necessary.
My mentor recommended this book to me. It reminded me of important Christian concepts and the centrality of the cross. It's very theological and central to God's words. Although the language is a bit hard to read, it's a good book.
Throughout every chapter (or sermon) of this book by Martyn Lloyd-Jones is solid biblical teaching on the meaning of the cross. Not only that, there is also a consistent prophetic voice and power at work throughout.
Incredible montage of Jones’ teachings on the cross of Christ! From the amazement to the triumph, he gives a great scope of what the Christian Faith is built on - the climax of history: God meeting man by dying in their place. Oh, what an amazing God we serve and love!!!
