Most concern the archaeology of Roman Britain, which has been at the heart of Sheppard's research interests, and to which he has made such a distinguished contribution. The book covers such varied themes as early urban defenses in Britain (Roger Wilson), the status of London (Roger Tomlin), the employment of civilian building-gangs on Hadrian's Wall (Michael Fulford), iron weapons from Newstead (W H Manning), military vici in Britain (Sebastian Sommer), the terminology and use of samian cups (Geoffrey Dannell), the text of a travel diary about the Antonine Wall in 1697 (Lawrence Keppie), attitudes towards conserving Hadrian's Wall for posterity (Christopher Young), and red-slip pottery from the Egyptian fort of Nag el-Hagar (Michael Mackensen) . The book is completed by a new Bibliography of Sheppard Frere's publications (compiled by Roger Goodburn and Sally Stow).
