Estoy feliz y me siento aliviado. Si estás leyendo esta crítica, que tengas un estupendo día (o noche)!
As a stand-alone self-teaching guide, "Advanced Spanish Grammar" tries very hard to do it all. What I appreciated was the completeness - lessons on all of the verb tenses (from present indicative to imperfect subjunctive - 14 tenses in all, + commands), lots of tips on tricky grammar, and huge amounts of vocabulary building. The chapters are neither too long or too short and hey, I got through it all, doing every exercise, so there's something to be said for that. It summarizes the verb tenses and unusual conjugations at the back, where the book also features an awkwardly short dictionary and unfortunately no index. Other positive features are that all the instructions, exercises and commentary are in Spanish, and after every few chapters there's a review test, another way to see how much you've learned.
Where the book fails to satisfy is in its textbook format. No pictures, jokes, games or puzzles, all great ways to learn. The book relies exclusively on fill-in-the-blank, matching and translation exercises, which are useful and authoritative and come with the answers. "Advanced Spanish Grammar" keeps its distance from the reader with heavy doses of formality, and I think that if you're going to spend so much time with a book it should be a little more fun. Might be a good book to go through with other people or with fun websites like rWorld.com, though, to help you remember what you've learned.
This book will stay on my shelf as a decent reference.
I have given this two stars because I bought this hoping for an advanced grammar guide and instead I believe this is suited more to those at an intermediate level. If you truly are at an advanced level I would not recommend this book. A shame because it has good reviews from other people but it was a waste of money for me. I bought another advanced book at the same time which really lives up to its name.
