Since she was young, Elisabeth Elliot had been intrigued by missionaries who gave up so much to tell others about God’s love. With a passion to translate the Bible into new languages, she followed God’s call to work among tribes in Ecuador, including the Waorani (Auca), who had killed her husband and four others.
Elisabeth kept a detailed journal of her life and missionary service. She returned to the United States after many years in South America, becoming one of the most influential Christian women of our time. A prolific author, speaker, and radio host, she passes on a message of joyful surrender to the world (1926-2015).
Janet and Geoff Benge are a husband and wife writing team with twenty years of writing experience. - Serios? Jim o privi parcã nevenindu-i sã creadă.
Scrise in jurnal: „Tăcerea isi prelungeste prezenta in sufletul meu. E un soi de asteptare in care nu răzbate nicio voce, niciun pas, in care nu se vede niciun semn. Cred cã as putea astepta zece ani dacã n-ar fi asteptarea aceasta, aceastã tăcere." -
Întrebări:
1. Cum se poate descrie căminul familii Howard? - Foarte ordonat.
- Gândul la soțul ei are a făcut același lucru.
this story is so beautiful. Elisabeth Elliott had such pure faith— it was so clear when she was dealing with unspeakable hardship and she persevered for God’s glory!! Her love for God makes me love God more 🩶🩶🩶🩶🩶🩶
Choked me up right the way through. Elisabeth Elliot was such an incredible woman and her journey and words are a great inspiration to me and my journey with Christ.
Thanks to the many books we've read by the Benges, my daughters and I already knew what happened in the jungle of Ecuador. However, Elisabeth Elliot's life was so much more than that moment. She is an inspiration to women.
I enjoyed reading more about "Betty" Elliot's life, which certainly wasn't easy. However, I found the writing in this book a bit uneven. The vast majority of the book takes place before she is 30. In fact, a lot of the book felt like a story of how Betty waited. . .and waited. . .and waited for Jim Elliot to ask her to marry him.
While that part of her life is interesting, I would have liked to have know more about the other 59 years of her life. She accomplished some amazing things after Jim was killed, but I felt like the authors raced through those events. I would have perferred that Betty's early life cover 1/3 of the book, and the rest focus on what she did after Jim's death.

I have loved all the books in this series, and this book was no different. A bit graphic in some of the scenes, but overall a great book. We read this book right after the Nate Saint book and so it was really amazing to see how two lives were interwoven. Praise God for these humans who decided to live for their faith no matter the cost.
What an inspiring biography! Challenging to the heart and written so well! I read this aloud to my kids along with listening to the Jim Elliot book. I also read The Savage My Kinsman and Elizabeth Elliot: Do the Next Thing by Trail Blazers on my own. Through reading all of these books in the same summer, I have a wide picture of the Lord’s work done in and through Elizabeth Elliot’s life.
Full disclosure: I didn't know who Elisabeth "Betty" Elliot was before reading this book. I picked it up on a whim because I needed a book by or about a missionary for a reading list. After finishing it, all I can say is Wow! What an incredible life! P.S. Have tissues handy when reading. You've been warned.
This is the third biography we've read of those who were part of the ministry to the Waorani in Ecuador. Each book tells a different part of the story and all are definitely worth reading.
Elizabeth Elliott’s story has fascinated me since my mom first read me a story about her in grade school. As I’ve started to revisit her story as an adult, I find myself even more in awe of her story and the depth to it that goes beyond what I was exposed to back then. I love this collection of books and how they dive in quickly but beautifully to the stories of missionaries!
As I finished this book, there are a couple things that really stuck out to me. First, as a 24 year old trying to figure out exactly the path I’m following and if it’s to be with someone, I had a lot of warm smiles as Elizabeth’s thoughts as she meets Jim and goes to school seem to echo mine (or is it the other way around?). Their relationship went much longer before marriage than I had realized and even though I know the bare bones of it, I was still so excited when they found their right timing. Elizabeth could have become so bitter and overcome in the light of what her life had become - the lack of answers, loss of gifts that had finally come to her, disheartened by the lack of progress the missions seemed to have. Her continual choice of joy and moving forward with deeper trust in the Lord was simultaneously convicting, challenging, and exciting.
A biography that didn’t feel like one. I was caught up in tears several times and glad for the opportunity to read what it’s like to live for Christ in reality. Elisabeth Elliot’s husband was murdered after years of waiting to be together and just a few months after the birth of their daughter and in all of it she loved the murderers as Christ loved her. And in the end the sacrifice of her husband beared great fruit as some of the men who murdered Jim Elliot gave their lives to Christ. It’s a deep inspiration to know that kind of love and understanding. It embodies the true meaning of this life. God is so deeply good and justifying. It also awakens a deep fear in that I’m not living fully, not serving the One who gave me everything. But I pray that that fear be motivating. And in the end of reading all I can say is that God is worthy of all praise and worthy of all my life can offer Him. He is truly good and truly beautiful.

Happy New Year! We made it through 2021, a year full of trials, sadness, and triumphs. Times can be really tough. But I am grateful to God for protecting my family from Covid and always providing regardless of the lockdowns from the previous year. Indeed, His mercies and grace are new every morning!
Elisabeth Elliot is a great example of trusting in God even when situations seem in a tight fix. Instead of sulking when her newly-wed husband died sharing the Gospel to the Aucas, she chose to trust in God. She even used her husband's death to spread God's Word even farther to the ends of the world! Have a blessed 2022! #elisabethelliot #newyear #NewYearVerse #bookreview #wethinkersthree #2022
Author Elisabeth Elliot writes in such a way that the reader is taken back to a more genteel time. As if you’re having tea together. But that does not mean her book has no depth.
Elliot has been walking with the Lord for a long time, has experienced much, and has much to teach us. She’s not afraid to talk about topics that aren’t popular today. And she always points us back to God and what He says on these subjects.
While this book is really useful for personal growth, I think it would make a marvelous study for a small group or book club. I recommend getting a copy of it.
I received a complimentary copy of this book but was not required to leave a review.
Loved learning more about her early life and her time before she was married. I didn’t know all that.
I think there was an emotional disconnect with me. It was more factual-based and not as in depth as the other books have been. Maybe because she was one missionary in the series to survive to an old age, they felt they needed to be more broad than specific? This just didn’t hit the same way as the others in the series.
Elizabeth Elliott was one of the most amazing woman that ever walked this planet. After her husband was killed by the Auca Indians she continued to work with the tribe until they came to the Lord. They were a savage tribe that killed just for the sake of killing and yet she loved them to the Lord. You will not regret reading this book. And might I add, read the book on her husband Jim Elliot first.
What a sweet story. My biggest takeaway, surprisingly, is about how cool it was that they did so much work with language and Bible translation. I can't imagine learning enough Spanish to be able to use that as a middle language to learn a tribal language from locals. It blows my mind and excites me. What a lovely book.
Wow!! I felt conviction reading about the life of Elisabeth Elliot throughout this book. Talk about surrendering it all for the Lord. I have a renewed gratitude for the resources so readily available to me in the comfort of my 21st century life. Including typing this review out. Thank You, Jesus, for a life well-lived. We need more examples of courage and conviction like Ms. Elliot.
I have heard a lot about Elisabeth (Betty) Elliott, but didn’t really know much about her background- other than that she was married to Jim, and that she continued evangelising the Indians who killed her husband.
Riveting story and amazing how she was courageous and strong in the Lord. And the importance of her upbringing how that supported her in her Christian walk.
A Woman of Great Faith Regardless of her Circumstances
I would recommend this book for any woman claiming to be a follower of Christ. Elizabeth Elliot was committed to following Christ regardless of the trials and challenges that were placed at her feet.
Elisabeth Elliot is my hero. She inspires me to be a better woman and to seek God in all I do. I loved reading this biography. It was fast paced and entertaining. And yes, I did cry a bit. What an amazing woman, Elisabeth Elliot was.
What a fun read that left me loving Jesus more and desiring to live a life full life of ministry in every season. This book told so many adventurous stories of Elizabeth Elliot’s life. Excited to read more missionary stories in this series!
I loved this series as a child. As an adult, I'm not sure it’s the most strict biography. However, Elisabeth was an incredible woman and her story is well worth telling to new generations who didn't hear her on the radio.
This book says that it is written for 8-12 years old. My 9 year old niece and I were going to read it together, but as I began to read it, I felt like the way that many of the events were written about was too mature and detailed. It seems the book would be better for 12+.
Sparked a lot of great conversation around missionaries, martyrs, and what it may look like to suffer for the sake of the gospel. Love having this series available to walk through with our kids — invaluable!
