Contemporary romance with strong primary characters. I appreciate the way the author ties the stories to the historical romances I'm so fond of by introducing them as ancestors.

Deadly Sexy is another romance suspense title from Beverly Jenkins and takes place at the same time as Dangerous/Sexy. Either can be read first, but it's inevitable one will compare the two books.

First, Deadly Sexy is a little more plausible than Dangerous. A sports agent getting caught up in some bad business is always more believable than a super secret government agent with super dogs, especially the way Jenkins tells it, with the suspense taking a clear second place to the romance.

In fact, I really liked the romance. "JT" is believable as the strong, competent, smart sports agent. The author clearly knows her sports. Never a Too-Stupid-To-Live moment from her and no dramatic Big Understandings either. Though neither is really looking to enter the dating scene when they meet, JT and Reese, or Jeese as I like to call them, are very down to earth and intelligent people. They know a good thing when they see one, and the feelings between them are a good thing.

How could JT fail to love Reese, tall and toned in his silk shirts and his "mahogany" voice? Reese the Fine, as JT aptly names him, is shrewd, capable and strong enough to admire an independent woman. His responses to JT's requests to give her space were reminiscent of a modern Westley: "As you wish."

You see, our boy Reese also moonlights as a knight in shining armor. He's not really a trucker (I know, I was disappointed too). He's an ex-cop from Detroit turned part owner in a multimillion dollar company -who needs the DPD when your brother is a genius inventor?- and he wants to court our heroine the old-fashioned way. Needless to say, this was a surprise. I haven't even seen real, true-blue courtships in historical romance. It was sweet coming from this modern man (and his very modern courtship, if you know what I mean- rated R for one or two scenes.)

At this point, we could be watching an episode of The Game, complete with the chatty girlfriend and a modern, sensual romance, but then the suspense arc takes a more active role and the villain becomes (PG-13) violent. While this was plotted and executed well -Reese's usurping the local detective's investigation aside- I felt this could have been told more efficiently.

The last third of the book dragged and was a little predictable with the hero and heroine essentially sitting ducks for the villain's attacks because they're engaged in scene after brief, perfunctory scene of repetitive lovemaking. On the side, JT becomes acquainted with Reese's family, but I wish that Jenkins had devoted more attention to one or the other element, either JT and Reese's relationship or meeting and exploring his family in depth, as real people rather than the Super Smart Brady Bunch of Four. Instead, both elements came across halfhearted.

I would also like more internal dialogue throughout. The characters have their introspective moments when they're apart and perhaps this style is easy to read, but we're kept at a distance with this kind of surface narration. We're never really inside the characters' heads. I felt this was considerably improved from Dangerous/Sexy, however, where the exposition was littered with rote, my-accountant-wrote-this summation. "Then the hero received a call that the case was solved and he was happy."

At any rate the novel only degrades near the end. The first half, which we'll call Contemporary, I really enjoyed, and the suspense wasn't bad. 3.5 stars, I think I'm done with Jenkins. I'm ready to move on.

I don't read much romantic suspense these days, but I really enjoyed this book first published in 2007. The book features a smart, strong, independent heroine and an equally smart hero. The suspense portion is interesting, but never detracts from the romance portion. And thankfully, our smart heroine never turns stupid, and actually always does the smart thing. I'm going to have to go back and check for more of the author's romantic suspense titles. This is a B+ for me, so four stars here.

I love Beverly Jenkins, that said, this unlike any Beverly Jenkins book I’ve ever read before cause it’s not historical fiction romance, more like thriller romance. Anyways consistent to her nature, this love story at the center of her drama was EPIC and of course made me yearn for my own Reese. Highly recommend this book for anyone that loves romance novels or Beverly Jenkins or just good African American realistic fiction.

WOW! What a mind-blowing story! This is a stay-up all night, "I don't believe that just happened", 10 stars********** page turner.

Bobby Garrett, Bo Wenzel and Misha prove just what can happen when you sell your soul for the love of money. What goes around really does come around especially for some of these crazy folk. And that scene with Bobby Garrett and his grandmother, was "tears rolling down my face" funny!

Absolutely loved it!

After devouring Jenkin’s historicals romances, I happily discovered their descendants have stories in romantic suspense and contemporary romance categories as well! Of course I dropped right in to this book with expectations that happily delivered! Reese is from House of LeVeq-and just as fine and upstanding as the original family while JT is the great great granddaughter of Loreli Winters Reed and Grace Atwood Blake-so strong women and a few outlaws!

Strong characterization, a solid plot, decent suspense, a cast of colorful supporting characters and a seriously 🔥🔥🔥🔥 romance had me riveted.

Also did y’all know Deadly Sexy was a movie on Amazon Prime?!! I learned this tidbit when Ms. Bev signed my book and am doubly intrigued!

What a magnificent ride this book took me on. My very first read by Beverly Jenkins and will not be my last either.

Oh man without giving anything away. But everything that could happen, happened. You never felt lost, the story flowed like a river and it was just brilliant.

JT and Reese are magnificent. Their chemistry was off the charts and did not feel forced. I loved the Anthony Men; Pops, Bryce and Jamal (Those 2 are called Pinky and the Brain LOL!!!)

There was hot romance, murder, intrigue, surprises, gasps and laugh out loud moments.

I am so glad that I bought this book and now I am off to read the next book which is "Sexy/Dangerous" which is the story of JT's sister Max.

The Lady Blake is a strong female character that I instantly connected with. The romance was of the hot, grown, and sexy variety with enough drama to keep you turning the pages. This was a Goodread.

Definitely not my favorite Ms. Bev, but still an enjoyable read. JT is very much "not like other girls" and that's never my favorite archetype, but I'm sure some women feel seen in her character. Reese is a typical Ms. Bev hero, completely gone for the heroine and ready to do anything to protect her or give her what she wants in life. The background suspense plot was fine, though never what I come to these books for, and I enjoyed the minor character POVs more than usual.

I love the way that previous stories play into these, both in the contemporary setting with JT's sister and her man, and in earlier published historicals. Combining the Le Veq family and the Blake's is a great nod to some of the most iconic stories in Ms. Bev's backlist.

Truly I don't care about romantic suspense, but I'm always ready to listen to Ms. Bev weave a story together.

A fantastic example of old school romantic suspense. It’s the first romantic suspense I’ve read in ten years, however, and I find that I don’t like the genre (or distant third person, or the pacing, typical of the genre) as much as I used to, thus the 3 stars. That being said, JT as a sports agent felt real, and both strong and feminine in unexpected ways, and her hero was charming.

Suspense is not really my thing, but my biggest problem here was the villain who apparently was never told "when you find yourself in a hole, stop digging".

Roadside Assistance With A Sexy Twist

WOW...in "Deadly Sexy, Mr. Reese Anthony provides the kind of roadside assistance, that I would be WILLING TO WAIT on ALL day. A man of many talents and a TRUE gentleman to boot. Thoroughly enjoyed the old fashioned courting he was giving Jessi. Ms. JT Blake is an independent woman that knew how to take care of herself, and was definitely handling her business well. Ms. Jenkins put the two of them together on the 5, and from that point on the SPARKS were FLYING throughout this novel. Ms. Jenkins delivers a thrilling ride of drama, suspense and HOT & STEAMY romance, that will keep you on the edge of your seat and eagerly turning the pages to find out what happens next. As always her characters are UNFORGETTABLE, the good guys and the bad guys, and the dialogue is fresh and witty, which keeps the story flowing effortlessly across the pages. I love the way she connects the present day characters with her historical romance characters. Since I've only read some of her historical romances, I now have to back track and read all of her sizzlin' romantic suspense novels. Ms. Jenkins has yet to disappoint me with her writing skills! And I definitely look forward to reading more of her work, old and new! A definite MUST Read!

I just read this from my shelf and didn't know of its description. This is the first book I've read where the main characters are African-American, but I'm no stranger to life as a sports agent.

I enjoyed it since I'm a fan of murder mystery with romantic suspense. I also liked the subject of family since JT's and Reese's respective families are a close-knit bunch.

JT Blake is a kickass agent and her clients are topnotch. She's not exactly a damsel in distress since she knows about car trouble, but help from Reese Anthony didn't hurt at all. They bonded through the long drive from Texas to California and the chemistry is just there.

They matched really well since Reese wasn't some a-hole who's intimidated by an independent woman. He may have misrepresented himself at first but it's not an outright lie since he's really a trucker. I liked the old-school courtship, it was really sweet and it doesn't happen anymore.

The villain was really stupid, I laughed when he was snitched. Ms Jenkins wrote an excellent mystery where some characters threw me for a loop. At the end of the book the author explained that the characters here are descendants from her historical romance novels, and that's really cool.

This was fun! Very escapist (everyone is hot, has money, knows someone who can solve their problem, etc.) which was well timed in my life. I was reading some other heavier books so this was a nice break. As with much of the allocishet romances I’ve read, there were some gender essentialist phrases that annoyed me (“he made me feel so female”/“now I feel like a man”). I would definitely watch the movie!

I assumed romantic suspense would make me feel to anxious, but this wasn’t didn’t at all. It was definitely a fast read, I wanted to know what happened next and I didn’t see the reveal coming.

4 stars. Love Beverly Jenkins. This woman can do no wrong. This was my first of her contemporary romances and it was wonderful. The characters are wonderful and feel real. J.T is a badass and I loved her. She's a sports agent and she takes absolutely no shit from no one. She has great character development and it was great seeing her let her guard down and fall in love with Reese. Speaking of Reese he was a hunk through and through. I loved his character. He's so smooth and suave and kind and I definitely swooned a lot because of him. Jenkins really knows how to write male characters that you just fall head over heels in love with.

This was wonderful and I'm excited to pick up more from her.

I loved reading this. This is Jessi's story which comes after Sexy/Dangerous (which I reviewed yesterday) This story shared a little bit more about Max's story as well, expanding on a shared scene they had. This story shares what happens when women succeed in a place people don't believe they should and how those who can't level up react to your success.

Jessi known as JT in the business world is a successful lawyer who becomes a sports agent in a world dominated by men. She's brash, confident, successful and beautiful. This is another story where tall women get some love. She's a sports fan who turned her love into a profitable career and because she's good she's well loved and also hated by those who wish they could be her. On the way back from talking to a client her brand new baby breaks down and she's rescued by a fine a** trucker named Reese. Their chemistry is off the charts and even though he's a stranger, she makes some calls puts her emergency plan in place and gets help from Reese. I absolutely loved their meet cute, because she established right away that even though she's beautiful and looks cool, there are brains behind it.

I loved that they had a bonding time due to their road trip to drop her home and Reese knew immediately he didn't want this moment to end. Listen, the way he went after courting her??? Sweet Gawds, no walls are standing up after that. Much like her sister's book this a grown and sexy romance, with two successful people who are self-aware, well adjusted and have their lives together except in this one spot.

As the story advances we get more going on that just these two fine people working on dating and becoming more, we have a murder to solve, we are left with the mystery the motivation and then the who did it of some events. Even though we know why they are doing some of the things, reading it I kept saying but my guy *because I'm from NYC* if you put that much energy into going after her, you could do the same with your goals. Duh!!

Even though Reese and JT have great chemistry, they started on a bit of a falsehood and that plays into how she handles them going further in their relationship. As the story got deeper and the mystery kept getting deeper and the situations kept getting worse I wanted to just scream at the villain like GET A LIFE and leave Jessi out of it!!! Then we get the ultimate betrayal??!!! Girl, how the heck didn't you realize you were in over your head?? Like I get what she meant when she said she could overlook the first two requests but when he asked for that final thing??? Bitch I would have singed like a canary in a coal mine. Is you crazy?? I'm not doing that. Call me a snitch if you want but nope nope NOPE!!!

I absolutely loved this story and because so invested, I would really love more from the brothers and know how they end up. I'm interested in the father's story, does he go courting?? Do Pinky & the Brain find love, do they ever invent something else??

Another thing I wanted to note, was the casual wealth discussed and embraced within the novel. It's not brought up a lot but it's displayed in their actions and how they go about their world. Considering who they are descendants of (she links back to a few of her historicals) it's nice to think that their ancestors would love knowing their dreams came through somewhat. I loved that they were moving through a world that wouldn't normally include successful black men and women in the backgrounds ( making the deals, determining the worth of the athletes, making the serious money) even though the athletes might be predominately black and brown. I loved the discussion of hanging on too much to the past and how that can be destructive and how success without reaching back to bring another along isn't really success.

It's a great read and I'm going to add it to the favorites shelf and of course highly recommend it to you to read. *Psst* she includes a great soundtrack with it as well!! Oh, and it's now a movie adaptation on Amazon. I will be reviewing that as well!!!

JT Blake is a high powered woman who is a Sports Agent. She meets by chance Reese Anthony who appears to be a trucker who stops to aide this woman while she was in distress. However, the attraction between the two is fast an furious. Reese is more than he appears to be but knows that JT may hold the key to the change in his life her never knew he needed. JT has a high powered job that takes up nearly all of her life, is there a place for a man?
Someone is trying to kill JT and Reese is determined to protect her at all cost. This will lead to secrets being revealed and lies being uncovered. I loved how Reese tells JT he wants to "court" her. What he does is how most ladies want their man to pursue them.
Reese has two brother called "Pinky and the Brain" who nearly steal the show, but they have a charm learned from their father that endears anyone who may cross their paths.
This book is being made into a movie and I can't wait to see it. Ms. Jenkins has woven a tale that is sexy, compelling and real. She is a Master storytelller that is champion in her own right.
Thank you for Mrs. Jenkins for this story and I pray you will write one that will she light on what happened between Reese's Father and JT's mom in time to come..

While this book is classified as a romance, and it does have that, its really about murder, drugs, and the sports industry.
JT Blake and Reese meet when her car breaks down on the highway and he stops his 18 wheeler to offer help. She thinks he's a truck driver and he thinks she's breathtakingly beautiful. They are that but much more of course. JT is a high power sports agent and Reese is an attorney, past vice detective and the truck is a new development in computer controlled rigs all created by he and his brothers for their family owned international trucking company.
As the story progresses we learn that JT is being targeted by another sports agent (Bobby G3) who blames her for his lack of success and plans to eliminate his competition starting with cutting the drive belt on her car.
Bobby's got more problems than JT though. He's broke and hooks up an old gang leader and one of the owners of a team on a drug deal that gets walked in on by and innocent maintenance man that Bobby shoots and kills. The development of this story is what kept me turning the pages as well as the romance between JT and Reese.
Good story and if you're a fan of Beverly Jenkins it shows her diversity when it comes to story telling.
Thank you Ms. Jenkins for another enjoyable tale.

It will suck you in

JT is in the top of her field. She is a most sought for sports agent of which there are not many. Add in that she’s black and the stakes get higher. Most men can’t handle her but then she meets Reese and he’s almost too much man.
Reese is immediately smitten although he’s not sure he should be. He’s heard of JT and knows to be thoroughly impressed with her credentials. He also appreciates how, even though she makes plenty of money, she’s very down to earth.
But there are outside forces trying to keep them apart. In particular, trying to get rid of JT all together. The whole story, along with the sub-stories, are fascinating. The surrounding cast of characters make the story better. And add in the fact that this story links back to some of Ms Jenkins past books, it’s winning all the way around!
