I searched bookstores, second-hand bookstores and the internet HIGH AND LOW to find the most recent updated version of the book (this one was published in 2005 so it’s pretty out of date). Turns out the new version is possibly one of the hardest out of print books to find on the planet, any that were available were over $100.
Used this to plan my PNG and Solomon Islands trip and despite being over 20 years old, it had some good trip ideas / recommended places / general travel advice. It’s hard to know whether many of the businesses / places / roads mentioned are still available but in terms of highlighting towns and rural communities to visit, it was very helpful. The history and culture of the provinces also provides valuable and interesting information - definitely recommend AT LEAST reading up on these things before going.
Much of the technology information is sooo out of date its funny. They recommend bringing multiple CDs to burn photos onto ahhhhhh such simpler times. In terms of safety advice, I’ve heard conflicting things in 2026, some say it’s dangerous and others say the dangers are overblown. It depends on the area but always check embassy travel and safety advice before traveling, as no matter when a guide is published, it can quickly become outdated.
