Alpha Male Syndrome: Curb the Belligerence, Channel the Brilliance

Rate this book
The business world swarms with alpha male powerhouses who take charge, produce astonishing results, and bring enormous value to their organizations. But many alphas also leave a path of destruction in their wake. Competitive, belligerent, and impatient, these hard-charging leaders can run roughshod over colleagues and employees, to the detriment of their careers and the bottom line.

In Alpha Male Syndrome, Kate Ludeman and Eddie Erlandson build on their Harvard Business Review article "Coaching the Alpha Male" to sound a wake-up call to all alphas and the companies they work for. The authors show alphas how to leverage their unique strengths while confronting their destructive flip side risks. They describe the distinguishing dynamics of the alpha male syndrome and identify four commanders, executors, strategists, and visionaries. By understanding each type s nuances, alphas can transform themselves into more effective leaders. And those who work with alphas can transform nightmare work groups into collaborative dream teams. Exercises, checklists, and tips enable readers to harness the enormous power of the alpha personality while minimizing the downside of alpha behavior.

This book was an interesting quick read. If you're a male then it would definetly be a great self-help book. If you're a female, chances are you know a guy or two that is described in the book. If you don't want to wake up with a murder an alpha male one day maybe give it a quick look.

I learned about myself from this book, more than I did from all the personality tests I ever took.

Rimta knyga.

• When I got this book, I got it because I was dealing with a boss who was kind of a tyrant. I thought that he was an alpha male. It turns out, there are good qualities as well as weaknesses to alpha males. The boss I was working for only had weaknesses. He may have had some good qualities, but they never came out at work. Overall, I’m still glad that I read this book. It looks at relationships in business and gives you strategies on how to be more productive when you work with an alpha male. It doesn’t state that alpha males are either good or bad. It just states what their studies have shown they are. There is also an assessment that you can take for free when you buy the book to find out if you are an alpha male and what your strengths and weaknesses are. That was also a good exercise for me. Also in the book there were some good techniques for dealing with stress. I’m pretty happy I read this book even though I don’t work for the same guy I did when I put this book on the list. If nothing else, I feel like I will be more prepared for more situations that may arise in business.

The gist of the book is to know yourself. The authors provide a typology of four types of alpha males: commanders, visionaries, strategists, and executors. Each type is broken down into strengths and weaknesses and suggestions are given for how to deal with weaknesses to become better. Interesting, but nothing new for those who have done some reading in this area already.
