Many years ago, "The Cosmic Computer" was one of my entry points into SF, and I decided to reread it for this review. And it is still pretty good! Deep psychological thriller this is not, it's a tech driven story with just enough human interaction to keep it interesting. The MC is a Heinlein like competent man with a mission and the start of a plan. What makes the story so interesting is the unfolding of the plan in a complex fully fleshed universe. The MC follows their path through it, illuminating fascinating snapshots of stuff going on away from the main story line. Don't expect a LeGuin ending but do expect to have a happy, warm buzz. (BTW, the author was more influenced by the Annales than Carlyle.)

Some great stuff here, though in several ways becoming quite dated. For instance, not a single chapter goes by without several mentions of lighting up pipes, cigars, cigarettes.

H. Beam is one of the greats.

He helped to define this genre that was later called hard science fiction. His style is simple, elegant, and to the point. I found myself devouring his text and retaining everything I read.

The read is not laborious in any way, shape or form.

His stories are believable and fit within the nature of human behaviour.

He crafts stories about human expansion into space that one could believe.

He does not incorporate as much science as later hard science writers, but he did more than any other sci-fi writer that came before him. His definitely place more emphasis on science than his peers and contemporaries.
