Joe Konrath has written over twenty novels in the Lt. Jacqueline "Jack" Daniels thriller series. They do not have to be read chronologically to be enjoyed, but the order is: Whiskey Sour, Bloody Mary, Rusty Nail, Dirty Martini, Shot of Tequila, Fuzzy Navel, Cherry Bomb, Dead On My Feet, Serial Killers Uncut (with Blake Crouch), Shaken, Stirred (with Blake Crouch), Dying Breath, Everybody Dies, Rum Runner, Last Call, White Russian, Shot Girl, Chaser, Old Fashioned, Bite Force, and Witch Brew. More coming soon.
Wow, that's a lot of Jack.
If you like your thrillers on the dark side, check out the Konrath Dark Thriller Collective, which includes the books The List, Origin, Afraid, Trapped, Endurance, Haunted House, Webcam, Disturb, What Happened To Lori, The Nine, Second Coming, and Close Your Eyes.
Joe also wrote the Stop A Murder mystery puzzle series, where you become the sleuth and solve brain teasers to try and catch a killer.
He also wrote the sci-fi trilogy, Timecaster, Timecaster Supersymmetry, and Timecaster Steampunk. Even if you don't think you like sci-fi, give them a try. They feature Joe's well-known characters from his other series, and are insane.
With Ann Voss Peterson he wrote the Codename: Chandler thrillers, including Flee, Spree, Three, Hit, Exposed, Naughty, Fix (with F. Paul Wilson), Rescue, and Free.
And, finally, he writes erotica under the pen name Melinda DuChamp, also with Ann Voss Peterson. Those books are probably too spicy for you, so only the brave and bold should seek them out.
Joe writes a lot. You should probably read everything.
This was the first Jack Daniels stories I've read, and I was impressed. There's a nice selection of stories here focusing on several characters from the Jack Daniels series. You get some humor, some really dark stories, and some in between. Also a few traditional mysteries thrown in as well.
Overall I liked every story, some more than others as usual for books like this one. The characters are very interesting. The stories are as well. It's rare to find such a variety in one book.
One thing of note, the last story in the novel was said to be the most offensive one the author has ever written, and while I can see why, I really wasn't offended by it. Maybe it's just me.
If you like hard boiled crime, mysteries, or humor, pick this one up. Granted, it does cover the entire spectrum from darker than dark to total comedy, but there's probably something here for almost everyone.
Ok...first off, I am not one to spend much time on short stories. I hate the feeling of diving into a book and having it end in a few short pages. So, when I saw Jack Daniel Stories-A Mystery Thriller Collection by one of my very fav authors, Joe Konrath, I snatched it up, but at the same time remember thinking, "Short stories?? ugh". But, I was really needing a 'Jack-Harry-Herb-Phin' fix.
So, my review? I LOVED THIS! The same ole J.A. Konrath, just condensed in short, hilarious, gross, warped, twisted stories. Who else but Joe could get me laughing out loud at a story about Necrophilia?!? I mean, WTH?! And what I particularly enjoyed, was that for each story, Joe writes an intro of sorts. Why he wrote it, what he thought of it, what happened with it, etc. Really, really loved this.
And I'd like to weigh in on Harry McGlade. You either love him or hate him. I'm in the LOVE HIM group. I absolutely adore him and so happy he was heavily included in this collection. Lots of laughs & OMG moments.
So, yeah....if you're a fan of short stories, twisted, humor, crossing the line, or the great J.A. Konrath, you must read this. Very quick read (of course, I usually devour anything by him).
My only complaint---Mr. Friskers did not make a single appearance. Shame on you, Joe. ;(
This kindle e-book novel is from my Kindle Unlimited account book one of four
This is a number of short stories with Jack Daniels and friends each story is different with interesting characters lots of action and misdirection leading to each conclusion.
I would recommend this series and authors to 👍 readers of romantic family and friends relationships adventure mystery novels 👍🔰. 2025 👒😤😮
I love all stories by this author. They are so unique, kinda weird, humorous, adventurous, and full of exciting life. I don't have nearly enough of his books, but when I have the opportunity I will grab one. Some of these are not for the faint of heart. The Jack Daniels stories are my favorite, but his stand alone novels are right up there as favorites. If you enjoy murder, mayhem, and some torture these are for you.
Most of these stories are in Konrath's omnibus collection "65 Proof." There are two Harry McGlade stories I hadn't read, though, which are typical for the character.
This a collection of 15 short stories (quite varied in length) featuring Konrath’s regular characters from his popular (Ms) Jack Daniels mystery series. The author’s lengthy foreword explains his intent with each of these characters; and moreover he provides a brief specific intro to each tale (in addition to a table of contents that hints in one sentence the gist of each entry).
There are four featuring Homicide Lt. Jack, meant to be somewhat serious police procedurals, including a brief “locked room” story entitled “With a Twist” that we had previously read as a standalone ebook (which see). Four feature PI Harry McGlade, which are primarily meant to be mostly just silly almost in the style of a Carl Hiaasen farce (though not that over the top!). (One of his entitled “The Necro File” includes an author’s warning that many will find it distasteful {as did we.}) Five more feature terminally-ill Phineas Troutt, who is as likely to double-cross his client as he is to “legitimately” earn the drugs he needs for his last few months of life – for some perverse reason we found these twisty accounts particularly amusing. One standalone entry features a non-recurring “working girl” character. Finally, one story features Detective Herb Benedict coping with a sniper.
As with most anthologies, some of these please, some are readily dismissed, and others seem like mere filler. But nonetheless, Konrath is mostly predictably entertaining throughout. -------- Update – for some unknown reason, the paperback version of this collection, unlike this ebook version, contains a sixteenth short story (Jack Daniels) entitled “Floaters”, which is otherwise available as a standalone ebook…
Short stories. Some are better than others, of course. I’ll admit I didn’t finish the last one, as it was just stupid - and should have reduced the overall rating even more, but I gave it a pass.
I do have a nit to pick about Konrath’s books in general: OxyContin (oxycodone) is not codeine. They are both opioids, but they are not the same drug. Vicodin (acetaminophen and hydrocodone) is also not codeine.
Also, while I think it’s funny that the year of Jack’s Nova changes from book to book, I thought it was weird that Phin’s former fiancé’s name is also inconsistent (Annie, Donna, and I can’t remember the third one so far, maybe Linda).
Excellent book of 16 short stories with Jack, Harry, Herb, & Phin from the Jack Daniels universe by JA Konrath & a novella with serial killers Donaldson & Taylor from JA's alter ego Jack Killborn who writes books with Blake Crouch. Funny & gross stories delving deeper into Harry McGlade & his perverted life & sloppy detective work. Herb's story involving his wife, & plenty of Jack stories which also involve closed door mysteries that were fun to try and solve. I really liked to Phin stories to see the darker side that is hinted at in the regular Jack Daniels series too. Also a hilarious interview of JA interviewing Jack Killborn (his alter ego)
Fifteen short stories featuring characters from Konrath's books. Quick and entertaining stories.
The stories & the main character: 1. On the Rocks - Jack Daniels 2. Whelp Wanted - Harry McGlade 3. Street Music - Phineas Troutt 4. The One That Got Away - 5. With a Twist - Jack Daniels 6. This is a collection of short stories written by a man with an incredibly vivid imagination and a wicked sense of humor and storytelling! Some of the stories are incredibly gory but even squeamish person like myself loved the unusual characters and the creativity of the plots! Even you enjoy a walk on the wilder side you just might like this book. Different cops and private detectives grace the authors pages and yes he does write full stories and uses some of the characters are in full book form and others go into the shorts only. If you have the chance to read this-- take my word for it-- I found it hard to put down!
An eclectic mix of short stories featuring several characters from the Jack Daniels series. I've always liked books with Phin, but have to remind myself that he isn't always a decent guy. I liked reading the hooker story, but wow, I didn't like to see him kill so easily. Harry is definitely a selfish idiot, who at least knows right from wrong, even if he walks a fine line between both. The last story was definitely strange. Anything with Jack is good, but the one with the school shootings was heartbreaking. I enjoyed these other than some of the grammar issues.
I especially love (or is it love to hate?) Harry McGlade!
I think the stories with McGlade are among the best of the Jack Daniels series. (He’s so damn obnoxious, and you just can’t help wondering what he’s going to do next, to try to outdo his previous obnoxiousness.)
The Phineas Trout stories are also favorites. A bad guy with a good heart - what’s not to like?
If you’re already a Jack Daniels fan, these short stories are great for a quick read to get your “fix” of some of your favorite characters.
Did not like some of the language it it was a fun book to read I like some the humor in all the stories and the unexpected endings in most of the short stories
I like how Jackie deal with each unusual problem and save the day. I will be reading more of the Jack Daniels books I love reading fun books this is the 1st time I read any of this author books glad I choose this one with the different short stories with different leading characters
I'm not usually into the short stories but these were quite good. A couple I skipped over because I heard them at the end of some of the Jack Daniels books. I even liked the Harry McGlade ones! I just can't get enough of this author and these characters!!
Loved it! Collection of thriller short stories by Konrath. I love that they star characters I wish we spent more time with in the Jack Daniels series. McGlade and Phin are awesome, anytime we get their POV is great. Great introduction to the Konrath world and writing style.
Oh how I missed this crazy crew, especially McGlade. i know he is probably no one's favorite, but the man makes me laugh out loud from his idiocy and one-liners. And Jack, i love this MC with all my heart.
FIFTEEN TALES FROM THE WORLD OF JACK...Lt. Jacqueline "Jack" Daniels with PI Harry McGlade are like the old fashion police/PI stories with gory details. Very good narrators for all the short stories.
