A bond she didn’t choose. A love she can’t escape. A creature so powerful it bends the limits of time…
Smart, sassy, and sanguine, Des Mildue is a traveling sellsword in Rescalin, a dry and dusty kingdom full of rogues, opportunists, and thieves. She keeps her nose clean, brazens it out with a blade when she can’t, and keeps others at arm’s length where they can’t mess up her plans.
That is, until a sword fight gone wrong leaves her tied by blood to the first dragon hatched in centuries. Suddenly, Des has to contend with a new voice in her head: haughty, willful Esquidamelion. Des wants to leave Squid by the roadside, but the blood bond has other ideas.
With half the world on their tail - including Liv, her beautiful, faithless ex who Des is definitely over - Des must search for answers for why so many are willing to kill, maim and torture to get their hands on Squid. But she’s beginning to suspect her blood bond has tied her not only to a dragon, but to a fight for Rescalin’s future…
…and no one else even knows it’s at risk.
If you like the kind of story that grabs you by the shirtfront and hauls you through mystery, magic, adventure and betrayal, with a side of sapphic romance, pick up The Blood-Born Dragon, first in a new trilogy from debut author J.C. Rycroft.
JC Rycroft is a queer fantasy author living and writing on unceded Wadawurrung land in Australia. Their work draws on high and epic fantasy tropes, mixed with a dollop of queer romance, humour and wit, flawed but fabulous feminist heroes and diverse-in-all-the-ways characters, liberally sprinkled with philosophical concepts brought to life. She loves bringing together the apparent contradictions: high theory and silly humour, profound theoretical concerns with a rollicking good story, and ordinary people with unexpected demands to heroism that somehow only they can answer.
5+ Stars - Kick-Ass! Amazing! The best Sapphic fantasy I have read in a loooooong time
Gather 'round dear fantasy/adventure loving sapphics to hear a tale of bravery, love, danger, adventure, jealousy, fire, hate, passion, sacrifice, blood and DRAGONS!
Seriously, if you are any kind of fan of fantasy-adventure then you owe it to yourself to read this book! JC Rycroft has a wonderful way of writing that will draw you in immediately. The pacing is great with lots of action but enough breaks to let you and the characters get a breather before the next crazy thing happens. Even if you are only so/so with fantasy I would urge you to download the sample and just give it a try. Des is an amazing and extremely likable MC, she is not perfect but she has a good heart. She tries to be a bit of the reluctant hero but she just can't help but do the right thing even if it's against her best interests. Squid the dragon is awesome. The banter between Des and Squid is very amusing. And Liv - what a complicated relationship she and Des have! It will be quite the ride to see how that pans out. If they can work their shit out, they will be an unbeatable pair!
The lore of the world is interesting and I can't wait to learn more. Please please please - go read this book. It's sooooo good! And its on Kindle Unlimited! I want more people to chat with about it. :)
The Blood-Born Dragon is the first book in the sapphic epic fantasy saga The Everlands Cycle, written by J.C. Rycroft. A fantastic debut novel, following the story of Des Mildue, a mercenary in Rescalin, who after a fight that goes wrong gets blood tied to the first dragon those lands have seen in half a hundred years; while she would have liked to leave Esquimadelion at one side of the road, the blood bond has other intentions.
There's not much time for Des to realize what hatching Squid really means, because all Rescalin is soon persecuting them, trying to get their hands on Squid, including Des' ex-lover, Liz, a charming person, but the last one she would like to see. Des still needs to know what to do with the dragon, as Squid only repeats to her she should take it to a location that doesn't appear on the maps. Squid is manifesting its ability to bend time, becoming an ever bigger headache for poor Des.
With this premise, a big journey across the Everlands starts, with many characters supporting the story, especially memorable Liz and Elouise; the first one as part of a sapphic enemy to lovers trope, but a little bit expanded (and not going to lie, I might want to strangle Liz), adding spice to the story, and the second one, as part of those that would help our reluctant heroine.
Talking a little about Des and her bond to Squid, it's amazing to see how it evolves and grows during the whole novel, passing from almost hating themselves to friendship and confidence. Des is a sassy and brilliant character by herself, a sellsword whose only idea was to reach a safe place until she got bonded with a dragon, becoming without expecting it a key piece for the Everlands.
The urgency of the travel isn't a problem to show the amazing worldbuilding Rycroft has done, with many winks to Australian/South-Asian flora and fauna; a big world where the political powers have their own plans, with the King of Rescalin trying to claim for himself the power of Squid. I personally liked the Quencher tribe, and their link to dragons, how they act as that last piece in the puzzle between the ancestral power and Squid; their body has adapted to living in the caverns, in a Gollum-like form.
While the pacing is not excessively fast at the start of the book, introducing us to our main character and the world, once it picks up, it doesn't stop until the end, hooking us to the pages of this book. Rycroft chose to use a first-person narrator that worked especially well in combination with the sharpness of her prose; mention deserved to the fight scenes, where she perfectly paints the chaos and the tension in battle.
The Blood-Born Dragon is an excellent debut, that left me craving for more books by this author. If you like epic fantasy with a touch of sapphic spice added, smart characters, and convention-breaking worlds, give it a try!
Dragons down under and a reluctant, if ever heroine (3.5 stars) The prequel „The Hired Blade“ (free on the author‘s website) raised the bar for this new series and debut author JC Rycroft quite high: good storytelling, a feminist angle, an unusual ending. The first installment of the Everland series started in my opinion a bit slow, with a lot of overthinking and wavering by Des, the main character. To be honest I couldn‘t get fully into the in my opinion weird decisions of Des around her opponents. After that the story gets off, is nicely paced and has interesting twists. I loved how the bond with the dragon (I got to love that Des abbreviated its lofty name to Squid) gives us hints and more and more revelations of what might be going on in the story. The tangled web with Des‘ former lover, Livianna, is well-done and engages the heart-strings and a whole gamut of emotions. I esp. liked that the setting is Australia-like, e.g. with wombats and not the usual medieval-European setting. I missed a bit the feminist angle so prominent in the prequel. Des‘ horse Liza is a wonderful side character which I came to relish. BTW the cover is gorgeous.
Thanks to JC Rycroft for the ARC. The review is left voluntarily.
This was a surprise hit for me! I saw "dragon" in the title and requested it without bothering to even read the blurb. What I got was an entertaining fantasy adventure about a reluctant hero sellsword who accidentally bonds with a snarky baby dragon and has to escort it to meet a much older dragon, while evading everyone trying to capture it and use it for their own gain, including her double-crossing on-again, off-again ex girlfriend. I really liked the main character - she was out of her depth for most of the story, which made her relatable, but she always tried to do the right thing, even when it got her in huge trouble. Her relationship with the baby dragon was so much fun, and I loved their back-and-forth.
The narrator was excellent: great comedic timing, and the Australian accent was a breath of fresh air in a genre where they are a rarity. Thanks NetGalley and Dreamscape Media for the audio ARC!
This high-stakes adventure is a wild ride! Suspense, action, a dragon, lady love, what more could you want!? I really enjoyed this story. I love the world-building and lore. It was so interesting and unique. I might have a crush on Des :) The relationship between Squid and Des is fantastic. Rycroft has a way with getting the feels across. I definitely have mixed feelings about Liv. read for yourself. I NEED the next book! I do not like to wait :) I highly recommend this sapphic fantasy novel.
So I had the prequel to this book somewhere within my audiobook apps and I saw that it was really short so I said great that will help me reach my goal for the end of the year. Now the prequel was so good and so captivating that I literally threw all my other ideas out the window and started these long ass fantasy books. Now to be fair they're not that long but they were way longer than I was planning on trying to squeeze in at the end of the year.
So I've read the first and the second book now and I'm trying to write a review for the first that doesn't spoil the second but also gets across a little bit of my frustration with the first book. The prequel was so good and it got me thinking that we were going to get this black fat queer love interest but we don't. And like I don't want to spoil it for you but like I guess maybe if I'd read the summary I would also know that. I don't know. I don't like Liz. I still don't like Liz after the second book. I cannot wrap my brain around trying to champion that romance when there was a black fat queer messy love interest for us to grasp onto in the shortest prequel and now I'm supposed to fall for this conniving skinny white girl who I guess maybe motives aren't so questionable but I don't know I just don't like her.
I love Squid and I like Des but Twisty really steals the show for me. I love him and I think that he's the cutest. I don't read a ton of fantasy because my brain just gets tired and this book is a little bit exhausting but I did like it. And I was excited for the second book when I finished the first. My mouth was a definitely hanging open in shock. So you have that to look forward to.
"I am me. Just as, I must love you because I am me and you are you. I have loved you forever and I will love you til then too. As I live, I cannot be without you -- it is half a life."
I received a copy from the author and I’m leaving an honest review.
I love fantasy stories with animals, and I love them even more when those animals have personalities and can talk. So you can imagine how much I loved Squid. It was absolutely adorable and I love it with all my being.
This book also includes another trope that I have a huge soft spot for: a character who “adopts” (or takes under their wing) a kid they accidentally met. Twisty was honestly such a fun and adorable addition to the mix.
The story was really interesting and that ending crushed me. I seriously need the sequel as soon as possible.
Generally I don't really care for sex scenes and many times I even skim them because I'm ace and sometimes they're described in ways that make me uncomfortable. It's interesting to see how sex scenes don’t bother me as much when they’re sapphic lol.
Unfortunately for me Liv reminded me a lot of an ex of mine, which didn’t make the experience entirely comfortable (not a problem of the book, just a personal issue of mine). But I do admit that she has a bit of character development towards the end, so I can’t hold a grudge against her that much. I hope we can see some chapters from her pov in the next books because I really want to be inside her head to try to understand her thought process.
My only real complaints would be that sometimes the story felt like it dragged just a little bit (mainly in the first half), and I also felt that the dragon’s info dump at the start was a little weird. It was just born but it knew that it had to go somewhere and do something, but the reason for its partial knowledge only gets explained 70-ish pages in, and for someone with a slow brain like me, those were some kind of confusing 70 pages.
content warnings: violence, blood, gore, trauma, torture (off-screen), corpses (including of people tortured to death), description of said corpses and their deaths, death of a child (off-screen), death of a parent (off-screen), cheating, homophobia, misogyny, ableism, graphic sex, war, fire, genocide, kidnapping, being taken hostage.
This book grabs you by the throat right from the start and takes you on a wild ride straight through to the end. My emotions were all over the place! But I can't wait for the next book to see where the story takes us.
This is such an interesting new universe and concept. I thoroughly enjoyed the book, despite my tumultuous feelings. While there is some sex, it's well-written and adds to the story. It's mostly fantasy, though, and adventure aplenty!
**POSSIBLE SPOILERS BELOW**
I loved watching the bond between Des and Squid grow as they travelled and Squid matured some. After reading the little prequel, I had hoped that Des would have some better luck in love, but it wasn't to be, unfortunately. And now, I want to strangle Liv even more than I did after the prequel!
I imagine the second book is going to be just as dramatic as this one and I'm eager to see what happens after the cliffhanger of an ending!
P.S. I received an ARC of the book so that I could leave an honest review.
In J.C. Rycroft’s phenomenal "The Blood-Born Dragon," readers are introduced to Des Mildue, a resilient sellsword maneuvering through life and doing her best. Her life takes an unforeseen turn when a chance skirmish binds her by blood to Esquidamelion (or Squid), a baby dragon whose emergence disrupts her entire world and puts her in incredible danger. Des is a tough woman nursing a broken heart and carrying a load of abandonment, yet she's still trying her best. Her ex Liv isn't exactly the kindest soul, and Des is still hung up on her, adding a layer of complication to her life. Especially when she walks back into it.
When the situation with Squid gets sticky, Des isn't afraid to roll up her sleeves and get her hands dirty, ready to make the tough calls when needed. But she doesn't have to be happy about it. Amidst the relentless pursuit by adversaries, Des grapples with the enigmatic nature of her new dragon and escalating threats to them both. As the mysteries unravel, it becomes clear that Des and Squid's connection holds significance; it's the linchpin to their shared destiny.
Des' dynamic with Squid feels like 'The Mandolorian' suddenly tasked with protecting a pivotal being that could change the world. It's a responsibility she never sought but reluctantly accepts, nurturing a swiftly growing connection. Twisty's unwavering loyalty, Squid's witty sarcasm, and even Liv's complicated and challenging nature surprised me; the author skillfully navigates these complex characters, making them intriguing and lovable. I adored it so much.
The sapphic relationship and the intricate webs of connections Des navigates make this a standout read. The relationship between Des and Liv is incredibly complex and fascinating in its exploration of different types of love and connection. Eloise's character is also a highlight. My anticipation for the next book is real—I can't wait to dive back into this captivating world. It is a phenomenal book that's a testament to rich storytelling and relationships.
I didn't like how the author used the geography of Australia as a shortcut to world-building. If I wasn't familiar with how Australia is described, I might not have been able to imagine any of the setting.
I didn't like the relationship between the protagonist and her love interest. I was holding out for self-actualisation and the love interest to disappear. Well, the love interest did leave but not before causing the protagonist angst. I don't like reading angst.
What I did like about the book was the dragon and coincidentally, the dragon's philosophy on death is similar to the fan fiction novel that I read right before this book. So that soured me on dragons for a bit. But except for that part, I liked how the how the dragon was described. The relationship between the dragon and the protagonist was the best part of the book for me. I wish it had more focus.
Well, I got this book on sale and I did get through it. The story was alright but there was too much deception among the main characters for my taste.
This entire review has been hidden because of spoilers.
This was a great read. I loved the characters, they really sang through the page. Squid's snark was endearing, making me smile even in harrowing situations. I read this in two sittings, only pausing to sleep. As it is, it's after 1am when I finished the 2nd sitting. I am looking forward to, hopefully, another book at some point. A rollercoaster, exciting, and engaging read.
Maaaate, didn’t realise how much I needed Aus-themed sapphic fantasy until now. Roos living alongside dragons just makes sense tbh.
Can’t believe I only found this series by looking for other queer audiobooks narrated by Katherine Littrell after falling a bit in love with her while listening to Ribbonwood. Thank fuck I’ve already downloaded the next one, because I need more Squid and toxic but sexy Liv 😩
This felt super unique and a sapphic story with dragons… say less! I loved the writing, it was different, but I love that the world feels so natural and relatable despite there being award fighting mercenaries and dragons. Seriously why do I feel like I belong there? Maybe because Des has such a great heart. The love story is weaved into the plot so effortlessly like it’s obviously there but the plot is interesting too. I can’t wait to read the next book in the series
Our main character Des is just trying to make a living as a traveling sellsword with her awesome horse Liza. She wants to avoid killing. She wants to get over her beautiful but manipulative ex, Liv. She definitely doesn't want to accidently bond with a small (but growing) dragon, the first one who is born in centuries. Des is a pretty good person. She doesn't have her life together, and adding a dragon to the mix doesn't make things easier. Powerful people want little Squid (Esquidamelion is its full name), and they are willing to kill or torture to get it. Des and Squid might be bonded, but it takes a while for them to actually accept that situation. I enjoyed reading about Des trying to protect herself, Squid, others. She doesn't always make the best choices, but she does try to make the best of the options available, and I love characters who are trying even when they're not hyper-competent.
I received an advance review copy for free, and I am leaving this review voluntarily.
The Blood-Born Dragon is an amazing debut novel by J.C. Rycroft. An epic fantasy sapphic enemies to lovers book that will leave you wanting more and more. It is an adventure and action packed book that is the continuation of A hired blade.
I am an avid fantasy reader and this book was just up my alley. The world building was done amazingly. Y tú be characters we so well done, and by the end of the book I truly cared for them. I love Des they are such a kick-ass fiery main character and I loved the forced bond with a dragon storyline for them. Des’ story is simply amazing since the start and I loved reading about it.
Honestly this book was just so well done, the story was done perfectly and I didn’t feel like there were any moments that didn’t go with the story. The world is interesting and the action keeps your attention all the way. I absolutely recommend this book and cannot wait to continue this series.
I am so glad that I asked for recommendations for books for Pride month, and even more glad that J.C. Rycroft saw my post and recommended it because I absolutely loved it!
Des is such an amazing main character, resilient and resourceful, and skilled at keeping others in their place - until a little dragon hatches and bonds with Des and our reluctant heroine has no choice but to help Squid. Speaking of Squid, I love this dragon so much. There is much at stake not just for the entire land, but for Des's heart, because her ex Liv (whom I wanted to strangle) is back in her life and now Squid's, and that's not a good thing.
There is more in this series - a prequel as well as the next book and you bet your sweet buns I am going to read those. Highly recommended!
It was a good story, mucked up by humans, despite their sexuality. Meets the requirements for LGBTQ month, not something I look for, but can overlook if the does not destroy the arc of the story. I think we will see the self sacrifice of the human lover pair, Liz & Des. The interaction of the Dragon/Human pair is up for a severe testing in the follow up story, as at the end of this one they are separated by the self styled Emperor, who has dragon-napped Squid, and is off to his own country, where he plans to pursue the blood-bound tie that grants near immortality to the human partner.
This was described to me as a top tier sapphic romantasy. It was fine, it didn't really scratch an itch for me. I'm glad to see more sapphic romance in fantasy and Des was a compelling character for most of the story. I didn't really think it was a satisfying or interesting romance. Des wants Liv to be something she is not and I didn't really get any depth for their relationship that would make her keep coming back to her except that she's hot. The dragon world building wasn't particularly anything special or interesting and I felt like there was a lot of telling without showing.
if the crazy royals don't kill them, IST will
Regretting my choice of reading this before having at least 2 more books released already. I need book 2 on my table now plz
OMFG, Des was frustrating, since I didn't know what made her tick, her choices made me so frustrated my teeth ached. She made decisions that were clearly the wrong ones and she knew it, yet kept going. Infuriating.
I also found this a hard reading, especially at the beginning. Loyalty is a very important thing to me and all those betrayals and cruelty made my heart burn like they were crimes committed against me. So I had to read it clenching my teeth as I got angry learning about what people did or said, Des included.
But it still was enticing to read and I loved the writing style, all the word play even though sometimes I had to stop to think (hehe). And besides all the hopelessness I felt, there's the humorous feel going all the time that got me going. So it was an amusing, fun to read story in the end and also gripping, I had a hard time putting the book down to go to work and do my chores.
p.s.: I know this book has the makes of a 2nd chance romance going on, but I was definitely hoping Des and Liv wouldn't get together. I just couldn't forgive Liv, too much play, too many betrayals, all the fucking time. Even if I wish and think THAT ONE wasn't as black and white and I tend to see this kind of stuff, I'm not a great forgiver. And if Des won't I'll hold all the grudges for us both. Mind you, I think if they're ever to be together that it needs to take 2 to 3 books, because I don't think any sane person would forget all this shit in such short time. But who knows with Des...
JC Rycroft's debut does not at all feel like something novice. Their mastery of the language, pacing, and story-telling elements is next-level. Combine their prose with a thrilling story and a complex character cast, and I found myself desperate to keep reading.
I love books that make me think about the characters as much as the story, and JC does this well. No character is entirely surface level or necessarily what they seem, not even the children. Morality is always grey, and she shows this well. By avoiding stereotyped characters and drawing many intentional (and unintentional) parallels between characters, it becomes clear that we do not come even close to understanding who Des and Liv *really* are. I'm so happy to see that there are characters I think are generally relatable to many. It leaves me begging for more in the best way possible.
JC takes the ordinary fantasy element that is dragons and puts a unique and Australian flavored spin on them that makes their world so interesting and unique. I imagine dragons serve as an important device to make readers reflect on the inner consciousness of people- see the relationship between Des and Squid. Squid is not just Squid and Des is not just Des after they bond and feeling that relationship progress reveals a lot about Des and humans in general.
Before I end by saying that this book is amazing, I have to add that it's sapphic and it's got a very hot sexual undertow, even though there are not a ton of overtly spicy scenes.
Congratulations to JC on their amazing debut and I can't wait to read book 2!!!
So I've read quite a few sapphic fantasy stories, but I must say this was one of the best ones 😍! . What stands out in this story is its main character Des. I fell in love with her almost immediately and let's be honest it was mainly her speech that captured me (We love the heroines who can swear 👏✨ I don't see it often enough in books, but I love it. Like I would swear SO MUCH if I had Des' problems, so - relatable 😂). But later in the book you see that Des is also very compassionate and kind to those who she loves, great fighter and very clever. Just a book girlfriend material ❤️✨. . Another plus for this books are dragons, I've never read many books with dragons but it seems that I am obsessed with them now. And Squid was such a sweetheart 🥰. I would give my life for it. . And last but not least... Des' (and reader's) love/hate relationship with Liv. I swear I love her and hate her so much. I hope everything about her turns out okay because 😤😤!!! . I was expecting this to be good but it was even better and I am so happy that I got to read it 🥰❤️! After this I immediately started the sequel - I am still at the beginning, but I can't wait to continue 🫶. Because this storyline 👌 *chef's kiss*. Love the plot. Don't have any idea how it will work out but I believe it'll be absolutely perfect! ... this was supposed to be mini review but I got carried away 😂. Anyway go buy it and read it ✨. . Thanks so much to JC Rycroft for this e-book 🫶! It was wonderful reading ❤️.
As someone who writes (plus being an avid Sapphic genre reader), I felt a connection to this book that made it hard for me to put it down.
The character detail and especially the relationship between Squid and Des, made me want to just keep seeing where the story would take me. I will admit, I have some absolute frustration towards Liv (there were times when I just had to put my Kindle down and nearly scream into a pillow), but the "love to hate and hate to love" style relationship between her and Des just made the story better.
If I had to recommend a great Sapphic Fantasy read to anyone moving forward, this would definitely be one of my favourites. Amazing work J.C. and can't wait to experience the rest of this series.
P.S. thank you for being part of the amazing artistry that comes from our country.
✨Fantasy 🐉Dragons ✨Found Family 🐉Time Magic ✨Sapphic 🐉Enemies to Lovers ✨Bonded to a Dragon
I really loved this book! I loved how it was an epic tail. We went to different locations and settings. I also love the bond between the main character and the dragon. I love the idea of a blood bond with a dragon. I love all the lore that you get to read in this book.
The found family vibes in here were perfect. There is an enemies to lovers romance going on that I enjoyed. The battle scenes were detailed and very entertaining.
This book does a cliffhanger and I absolutely want to read the book. I am very excited to see where this is going.
This was one of my favorite audiobook lessons this year, just based on the narrator. The narrator did a phenomenal job. I will definitely read books that are narrated by this narrator more often just because I loved this one so much.
