What a beautiful book!

I was expecting a collection of arbitrary, feel-good quotes, but this book is so much better than that! Its combination of Scripture quotes, insightful comments, and devotional essays feels anything but arbitrary, as it lays out a view of faith that is simple, practical, and thought-provoking. Each idea follows logically after the one before, and faith is explored from a few different angles, each backed up by a healthy amount of Bible verses to support their analysis. It's edifying without being preachy, and it uplifts without ever descending to the saccharine. Theologically, this book is quite solid. For example, it says on one page, "Assurance is not based on our own abilities, but rather on the inward peace we get as we daily depend on God's grace and strength. Confidence based on our own abilities or achievements is false." There you have it, the doctrine of Sola Gratia, and the Reformers' writings on justification, all summed up in two concise sentences. Finally, as the title suggests, eagles are the main theme of the book. Imagine my delight at finding serious religious instruction balanced out with short, scientific sections that describe with great detail the life of these beautiful birds. I learned how eagles see and hunt, how they learn to fly, and how they build their nests. Of course, each characteristic shared here connects to the faithful life. All in all, an incredibly thoughtful, useful, well-organized book that does more than just cheer me: It inspires me to be better than I am.
