The John Wesley Reader On Christian Perfection.

by John Wesley, Mark k Olson (Editor)

Excerpt from Christian Perfection: As Taught by John Wesley
His whole life and work, during a long and useful ministry, teach more positively than any words of his, that his consecration and faith received a Divine re sponsa in the blessed experience which he insisted upon in others, and into which he led so many thousands of his hearers. There is no reason for believing that John Wesley sent his people ahead of himself, or that he led them into richer fields of light, sweetness, and love, than he himself enjoyed.

While I almost gave this less stars, I am giving it three because it did help me understand John Wesley’s view a lot better. I realized that I had a lot of misconceptions about what Christian Perfection actually is and that it isn’t as bad as I thought it was. However, that being said, I still do think that the view is very problematic. It does not have much scriptural basis and the scripture passages that Wesley does mention are, I believe, misinterpreted. Furthermore, I think this view ultimately leads to a works-based salvation and leads to a life devoid of hope or joy in the gospel because it leans upon our own works and sinless life as proof of our salvation rather than on Christ and His finished work and our union with Him.

I completely recommend.

"I couldn't have asked for a more beautifully written book. The author's words have a way of seeping into your soul."

Gracias, una gran bendición para mi vida y mi eternidad en mi Salvador Jesús, quien me redime, santifica y glorifica mediante el Espíritu Santo.

Possibly, the only scholar to have surpassed Lindstrom’s scholarship today is Mark Olson.

His annotations of Wesley’s, major book, A Plane Account of Christian Perfection; plus, Wesley’s other book, The John Wesley Reader On Christian Perfection plus Olson’s own book, John Wesley’s Theology of Christian Perfection: Developments in Doctrine and Theological System are undeniably today’s standard Wesleyan scholarship on Wesley and his systematic theology of sanctification.
