Break Away

Rate this book
Growing up on the mean city streets, sixteen-year-old Trey Carter learned the law of natural selection very well. He realized that to survive, he had to strike first and strike hard. That approach earned him the respect of his friends and enemies alike, until the day a fight went too far and his hardcore mentality landed him in jail. With a drug-addicted mother and a father he has never met, his only chance for release from the juvenile detention center is to move to rural West Virginia and live with his estranged grandfather, the very man he blames for every problem in his life. In the novel Break Away, Chad Arthur takes the reader every step of the journey with Trey Carter as he fights his own resentment and tries to outrun the demons of his past in search of a better life. Break Away is a realistic story of redemption and loyalty that readers of all ages will enjoy. Cheer Trey one moment and scream at him in frustration the next as he tries to adjust to life away from the big city and discover what it really means to be a family. This is an eLIVE book. A lifelong resident of Buffalo, West Virginia, Chad Arthur graduated high school in 1994 and, in a hurry to get on with life, joined the work force. Over the next several years he would work blue collar jobs until his wife, Chasta finally convinced him to follow his dream of becoming a novelist and he enrolled at Long Ridge Writer’s School.

The next few years would prove to be very tough as Chad tried to balance the demands of a young and growing family, a full time job and a full time course load. Even though he struggled through and managed to graduate on time, it would still take a few years, a lot of family support, and many late nights before he completed his first novel, Where the Willows Whisper.

Chad quickly received a publishing contract offer from Tate Publishing and the next couple years would be a whirl wind as he tried to adjust to becoming a published novelist and all that went with it.

Encouraged by the success of his first book and his love for writing, Chad quickly got back to writing. After much consideration he decided to resign with Tate publishing and his second book, A Heart That’s Full, has been scheduled for production.

Even as he proceeds through the back and forth process, that is book production Chad has began early work on his third novel, which will be a follow up to his first. So Duke Giovanni fans stay tuned.

In this book we have the main character Trey Carter who is living in the projects of Philadelphia. He has a drug addicted mom and he has never met his dad, but that doesn't stop him from dreaming of a way out and his way out is basketball. He makes a wrong decision that lands him in juvie and his only way out is a grandfather that he has never met, but whom Trey blames for every problem in his life. His grandfather Jacob takes him home to live with him in in a small town in WV. Because of the resentments and hate that Trey carries inside he comes off as a tough guy but soon learns that forgiveness and letting go of the past lets his heart begin to heal. I read this book in a couple of hours today and even though it is geered toward young adults I think that a reader of any age would find this an amazing story..
