Love has many forms, many aspects. Ceremonies performed in witchcraft celebrate the joy, comfort, and blessings of love. This is the theme of Love Charms . Here is a collection of enchantments to use now and ever after.
Elizabeth Pepper, the long-time editor of ‘The Witches’ Almanac’, first had “Love Charms” published in 1989. Unlike many of the similar short books on love magic published during that era, Pepper doesn’t attempt to show readers how to manipulate love charms (they don’t work, anyway, at least not well!).
Although the book was generally interesting, I have serious issues with what the author chose to include in this book. For example, at the beginning, Pepper provides three different love charms, and then follows with **eight pages** of quotes taken from various authors about love. I know witches are true lovers of poetry, but the eight pages of quotes borders on overkill.
What I do like is that Pepper included rituals for self-love or, as she calls it, increasing an individual’s well-being. However, why the author chose to include a ritual for drawing down the moon is beyond me.
The author incorporated three different recipes (Apricot Love Liqueur, Love-Apple Juice, and Enchanting Cocoa made with cognac!), and I wish that she had included more of them. Added to this are a few more (two) love charms, a cord spell, and a few candle spells that includes directions on how to make your own Love Oil.
This is an interesting book, but readers might be troubled by the way the author veers away from actual love charms.
