A former actor, theatre-director and drama teacher, Deary says he began writing when he was 29. Most famously, he is one of the authors of the Horrible Histories series of books popular among children for their disgusting details, gory information and humorous pictures and among adults for getting children interested in history. Books in the series have been widely translated into other languages and imitated.

A cartoon series has been made of the series of books and was shown on CiTV for a period in 2002.

The first series of a live-action comedy sketch show of the same name was shown on CBBC in 2009 and a second series is due.

Terry is also known widely throughout children and adult reading groups alike for his True Stories series (see below for series list).

He received an Honorary Doctorate of Education from the University of Sunderland in 2000. His numerous accolades also include the Blue Peter "Best Nonfiction Author of the Century" Award in the U.K.

These books were all the rage when I was in primary school, although somehow I never got round to reading them. I did read a lot about Egypt though, and having lived there for a few months, I consider myself quite knowledgeable about the country:))

This book is great. It's fun, it's detailed and it really does teach a lot.
I wish school books were as interesting as these are.
I'm looking forward to reading the rest of the series

How many of us read the Horrible Histories as children and claimed to know everything about the world? I know I did! I would read the books and the proudly tell anyone that would listen that I knew facts about the world that they couldn't possibly know. I love these books. The Awesome Egyptians was always my favourite because I love Egypts history and this is the book that started it all for me.

What comes to mind when you think about Ancient Egypt? Maybe it’s Queen Cleopatra, The Great Pyramids of Giza, hieroglyphs, mummies or something else. Whether you love history or not, you can’t deny that Ancient Egypt fascinates pretty much anyone. Why? Because it’s both a unique and complex civilisation we don’t know enough about.

If you are a young reader or an adult who is intimidated by chunky history books about Ancient Egypt, give Awesome Egyptian a try, a nonfiction children’s book co-authored by Terry Deary and Peter Hepplewhite and illustrated by Martin Brown. This short book comprises of an introduction, a brief timeline that includes the most important events of each ruling dynasty (from The Old Kingdom to the arrival of the Arabs), surprising information about the Pharaohs, the enigmatic pyramids, the frightening mummies, grave robbers, the Nile, Egyptian deities, life of ordinary people and many more facts you probably didn’t know.

Though the 3000 years of Ancient Egyptian history seem like a daunting read, the authors of this book know how to intertwine facts with games, jokes and stories that will make the learning experience enjoyable. Awesome Egyptians gripped me from the start and I refused to put it down until I finished it. My favourite chapter was the one about mummies, the mummification process and the afterlife. I know that the subject of mummification is a bit gruesome, but it’s still interesting to read about it because the Egyptians paid a lot of attention and meticulously prepared their rulers for the afterlife.

“Egyptians believed that one day the world would end. When it did they would move on to their afterlife. To make that long journey they would need their earthly body. If their body was allowed to rot then they wouldn’t be able to go.” (The Awesome Egyptians, Loc. 437)

In the end, Awesome Egyptians, as well as the other Horrible Histories books, makes history easier to learn in a fun and interactive way for readers of all ages.

It's been a long, long time since I first read The Awesome Egyptians, but I still remember it quite clearly. This was the first book I was ever given from the Horrible Histories series, just after we studied Egypt in History class way back when I was in my first ever school. I was enamoured and my parents thought that this would be a brilliant Christmas present, and they were right. I still remember how many times I read it - 14 - the first week I was given it.

This is a brilliant book for children and young adults and definitely furthered my mind into reading more about the Egyptians, and making history a subject I love even today. This was the first ever history book I read for enjoyment and to be amazed by history, and I would definitely recommend this to anyone who enjoys history. Although basic, it holds a lot of humour that definitely gets the point across and helps to keep knowledge locked in the brain. Even now, about fifteen years later, I still remember most of what I learned about the Egyptians from this book.

I really want to read this again after finding it again, and I would definitely recommend this to parents with younger kids who they want to encourage to enjoy history. This is brilliant and really is one of the best series for younger children and adults to read to encourage a love for history.

The Ancient Egyptians are one of my favourite historical civilisations and so perhaps it’s no surprise that I enjoyed reading this one. Deary has a knack for writing about history in a way that’s engaging for both children and adults, and while I don’t think I necessarily learned anything new, I’ve already read a lot of books on the subject. For a kid, it’d be a great little introduction into who the Egyptians were and how their culture worked.

The only reason I can’t give it 4* is that I was getting annoyed by the quizzes again. They’re designed to make the book more fun for kids, but as an adult I just wanted to be able to read the information. But I got over it.

Again, I'm not rating this series of books - but I really enjoyed this one! I learnt a lot about mummies, and the pyramids, and it's left me really wanting to watch a film or a documentary about them!

Well, that was fun. really fun.

I learned and re-learned a lot of crazy and interesting facts from this little book but the craziest fact of all has to be that Egyptians didn’t really change that much.
Still sassy, still miserable, still weird.

I just love this series so much and I’m so happy I decided to pick it up again that I want to kiss myself unstoppably for a 100 years for making such a smart decision but I honestly would rather go read the rest of the series. later.

Jadi benarkan Piramida bukan sekadar makam Firaun?

Bagian membuat mumi agak serem tapi menarik.

I accidentally stumbled upon Horrible Histories hilarious videos on YouTube one day and could not stop bingeing on them.

I absolutely loved the show, and I absolutely loved the "mummy-bo.com: Egyptian social media."

It's hilarious, and I loved how the show did not shy away from being completely blunt about the dark side of histories and their nastiness. :)

I absolutely adore ancient Egyptian histories, back then I didn't have much access to the internet, so I lurked around the school libraries and read up on any books, magazines (National Geographic), and artworks on ancient Egypt. I remember reading about how they mummified a body and was absolutely blown away!! I remember running back to my class to tell my mates how they processed the mummy and being so proud of myself for knowing something so cool!!!

This book is awesome! It may not be the type of facts that the school approved and sanctioned for kids to learn, but regardless, the awful truth is still happening, especially with what other nations did to the poor mummies!

I liked that the book covered a lot about the peasants as well because many books and documentaries focus mainly on the pharaohs and the famous "gods and goddesses.".

Isn't it sad that so many mummies were removed from their resting place and such mockery was made of it for the purposes of Victorian pleasure? I mean, all those mummies destroyed and eaten, I wonder who those mummies were and how they could have played an important role in understanding the ancient Egyptian histories.

I also wonder just how many of the important artefacts and belongings went missing, especially those that were smuggled or bought illegally. Don't know where they ended up... lost forever. Just because those people decided they had superior authority and were ethnocentric about ancient Egyptians.

Kind of wonder if the whole curse thing was invented to prevent people from stealing from the tombs to preserve the histories.

I still learn something new from this book :)

This review is 100% my own opinion!

It’s been a while since I picked up a Horrible Histories book (I was definitely more into the TV show growing up and even now, it’s still a comfort show for me!) but I wanted something easy and comforting to read (and I would like to finish the books I own in the HH series this year if possible!).

I really enjoyed Awesome Egyptians - far more than I enjoyed Savage Stone Age. I found Awesome Egyptians easy to read (as it is written for kids) but I still learnt so much from it as an adult. I think I enjoyed the book version of this period more than the parts shown in the TV show - I’m not sure why, I guess I just have different favourites in the books vs the TV show but I love them both in their own right! There is a good mix of humour and educational information in this book as well which is good - I love the pictures too!

I enjoyed learning about the pyramids, hieroglyphics and mummification and thought the activities throughout were interesting, such as how to make bread and sweets from the period. I also learnt a lot about how Ancient Egyptians lived - some of it was quite difficult to read at times.

I definitely picked Awesome Egyptians up at the right time - this series as a whole is so comforting to me and I learn so much from it. I’m glad I picked up this book and will definitely be continuing with the rest of the series - highly recommend! (The quizzes are tricky enough too - as an adult I got a few answers wrong!)

Okay let's talk about the Horrible Histories.

You may be aware of them as a TV show, which I highly, highly recommend, but you may not be aware that they are also books! Which I also recommend!

It's hard to talk about the Horrible Histories specifically. They're hysterical short nonfiction books consisting of maybe 120 pages tops? Aimed at children, they set out to tell you all about the really nasty side of history, which I am always down for. They're smart and funny with great illustrations, and I would never, ever have a problem recommending them to anyone, with two caveats.

The first is that they can be a little inaccurate. I really do mean a little inaccurate; it's mostly erring on the side of "we don't know which is really true but this makes a better story," and occasionally "research marches on." The second is that the author, Terry Deary, is kind of an asshole, particularly on the subject of libraries. I won't repeat his comments here. Suffice to say he's kind of a jerk.

But the books remain absolutely hysterical. A+ would read and love again.

AWESOMESAUCE!

I read this as a young teen. I think it was the first of the series to be written. I loved it. I loved ancient Egypt and that was both funny and informative which kept me turning the pages.

There is some gross stuff in it, but that's kinda the point. I hate gross stuff, but I still read this book over again now and then cuz it's awesomeness makes up for its grossness.

And it's the best of the series that I've read so far.
