The Theology of B. B. Warfield: A Systematic Summary

Rate this book
Benjamin Breckinridge Warfield (1851–1921) was undoubtedly one of the greatest Reformed theologians in the history of America. As professor of didactic and polemic theology at Princeton Theological Seminary, he wrote extensively in defense of fundamental Christian doctrines. While his writing touched on the full spectrum of theological topics, it was spread over hundreds of periodicals, books, and pamphlets, and a significant portion has never been published in an accessible form. Warfield stands as a dominant figure on the theological landscape, but few have a comprehensive grasp of his theology, largely because of the difficulty of tracing his ideas through numerous sources. Fred G. Zaspel has spent many years studying Warfield’s published and unpublished writing, and presents here a concise and coherent systematic theology per B. B. Warfield. For the first time ever, readers can, in one volume, access the content of this great theologian’s academic, sermonic, and devotional works. Scholars, pastors, and students will profit from the unique combination of comprehensive detail and devotional warmth in this systematic theology.

Though I haven't read this cover to cover, I've read enough to say it is a volume that belongs in your library if you're interested in Reformed theology in general or B. B. Warfield in particular. Since he never published a systematic, this is Fred Zaspel's attempt at offering one. For most of it then you are getting Zaspel's summary of large chunks of Warfield's writings and a good (but not overwhelming) amount of block quotes. Sometimes it is hard to tell where you are getting Zaspel's editorializing or Warfield's thoughts. But, I suppose that is the nature of a project like this. All in all, great book and very helpful as an introduction if you've never read anything in Warfield for yourself.

I am neither a Calvinist, nor a cessationist, and Warfield is both; however, I really enjoyed reading this commentary of Warfield. The sections on the Trinity and Christology were excellent.

While a little bit tedious at times, Zaspel does a wonderful job of introducing the reader to this remarkable theologian. I appreciate his exhaustive efforts in creating work.

A world class Reformed theologian who once resided at the legendary Princeton Theological Seminary. This man's legacy has influenced American Christianity in an amazing way. I am very thankful that Zaspel compiled his works into a single systematic volume. He was a world-class scholar and a heartfelt lover and follower of the Lord Jesus Christ. I have been most influenced by his "Miserable Sinner Christianity."

Praise God for this man and his works.

When it comes to Warfield, it's hard to beat Zaspel. In my opinion, this is the most accessible resource when it comes to thinking through Warfield's profound theology. I'm indebted to Zaspel for all he's done for Warfield scholarship.

My first real exposure to the theology of the "lion" of Princeton. Thoroughly enjoyed learning about this giant of the faith and reading his theological writings. Fred Zaspel did a great job.
