She was a novelist, short story writer, and poet from Maharashtra, India. She wrote in Marathi and English.
She was born in Pune in 1942 to Irawati Karve and Dinkar Karve, her father being one of the sons of Dhondo Keshav Karve. After finishing her high school education at Ahilyadevi School in Pune, she attended Fergusson College, also in Pune, to receive an M.A. in English Literature. She then received her PhD in English from Pune University.
I've been fascinated with Gauri Deshpande ever since i studied a small segment of one of her stories, 'Kalingad' in school. She writes with such passion and soul that one begins to feel like one of her characters while being engulfed with the story. This novel, 'Mukkam' takes us through Mumbai-Talegaon-Greece with such ease that it begins to feel like the journey must never end. Her ideas about feminism and the single woman, her acute desire to paint the strong, independent woman with the freedom to love herself and identify her true existence goes beyond just a fictional account. Gauri Deshpande is hailed as the boldest female writers among marathi literary circle and rightly so for expressing the need for love and companionship a woman felt, way back during the 70's when such concepts were considered shocking and taboo in the society. She bleached the understanding of being a woman with her self-respect and the right to live life on her own and created this streak of rebellion among young girls which later became the strong-hold for the new age, smart women! Being the daughter of Iravati Karve, who herself was such a staunch feminist, Gauri Deshpande i would say regales the impressionable young female minds to a strength thats long hidden and lies waiting to be discovered!
The first half of the book is just interesting...about Kalindi & her newly started life within physically/mentally disabled children. the second half talks about Kalindi's journey to Greece & spending few memorable moments with her lover Dimitri, its a bit boredom to read through...however towards the end, a general curiosity about her life keep you enticed with this novella.
