The warrior Mullah : the Horn aflame, 1892-1920 / Ray Beachey

Rate this book
From front "Mohammed Abdille Hassan fought for a quarter of a century to keep Somaliland free of European and Ethiopian control and Christian influence. He was, if contemporary evidence is right, a man of immense charisma, a master of desert and guerrilla warfare, an able politician and negotiator, a man of cruel and merciless temperament indifferent to human suffering, driven and sustained by a religious fervour and an unshakeable belief in his authority as a messenger of God... ...It is a fascinating and tragic story of unnecessary deaths and waste, occasions of great courage and self-sacrifice on both sides. The English called him the Mad Mullah. The British dead, like those of the later Greater War, may well have thought their own leaders mad as well."

Good overview of the British involvement in Somalia from an Imperialist viewpoint. Difficult to follow the maps and nothing on the Mullahs heritage post independence despite having a photo of the huge memorial statue of the Mulla on horseback in Mogadishu.
