Lethal Experiment

Rate this book
What if someone offered you $100,000 with the only stipulation being that a murderer would be killed if you accept the money? Would you take it? The people who choose to take it are about to find out the ramifications of their decisions to be part of this Lethal Experiment!
Donovan Creed, former CIA assassin, is a smart-aleck tough guy who can't resist a noble cause. Despite a ton of baggage and a penchant for call girls, he always finds a way to beat the bad guys. In this sequel to Lethal People, Creed is forced to choose between his thriving contract-killer business, his part in the Lethal Experiment, and his desire to live a normal life with the beautiful Kathleen Gray and her newly-adopted daughter, Addie. Before that can happen, he has to take care of some lethal business involving a former lover.
Lethal Experiment is a breezy and fun page-turner, featuring grisly humor, outrageous characters, and sexy dialogue.

I had never heard of John Locke until I read a blog post by Michael Shatzkin who writes about issues related to ebook pricing. Shatzkin noted that many ebook authors were doing quite well pricing their books at $.99, John Locke being a good example of someone making a great deal of money pricing them at that level even though he would probably sell almost as many at $2.99. If his books are 99 cents and most ebooks from big publishers are $9.99 and up, he doesn’t have to prove he’s as good as they are; they have to prove they’re 10 times better than he is!” Shatzkin noted he had read one of Locke’s and “I can tell you this. I’ve read one of John Locke’s books. Nobody I can think of is ten times better than he is.” (http://www.idealog.com/blog/)

Well, I just had to check this out and $.99 is close to pocket change. In 10 seconds I had it on my Kindle and was intrigued. Locke is a good writer and the story intrigued me. Donovan Creed is an ex-assassin for the CIA and Homeland security. “Years ago I’d been a government assassin for the CIA, and the people I killed had been a threat to national security. When I retired, I took a short break and then began killing terrorists for Homeland Security. But those jobs were infrequent, so I began killing people for mob boss Sal Bonadello on the side. Sal’s victims were always criminals and often murderers, so justifying their deaths hadn’t been a problem. But at some point I drifted into doing freelance work for Victor”

Victor is running an experiment to see what people will do for money. Couples are offered $100,000 knowing only that if they do, someone will die. “The Peterson sisters, like Rob and Trish and half-a-dozen others, had accepted “Rumplestilskin Loans” after being told that by taking the money, an unpunished murderer would die. In Victor’s mind, that made the recipients guilty of conspiracy to murder. Hence, accepting the cash, Rob and Trish were sentencing the Peterson sisters to death by execution. When Callie placed the next suitcase, Rob and Trish would have to die. It was, in all respects, a lethal experiment, and it would continue to be one until the day an applicant refused the money.” The variables change with each experiment and its Creed’s job to do the killing. Interesting premise, especially as Creed begins to have his doubts. (We needn’t go into Creed’s lack of moral fiber.) “What, indeed? I wondered. Is this what I’ve been reduced to, a guy who kills civilian men and women who didn’t realize they’d become accessories to murder simply by accepting a sum of money they desperately needed? Was it really a fair experiment?”

Moments after securing the Peterson sisters, he has a heart attack. To say more might spoil it.

Sometimes the book seems like a collection of stories pulled together by a common thread. Minor issue. There are some very, very, funny scenes in this book. The one in the hospital where all the staff look like they might have stolen their lab coats from playschool had me laughing out loud. Locke is good. Buy some for your Kindle. Well worth 10 times the price.

I was very excited to read this book after reading the intro... My goodness who wouldn't take $100,000 in this economy? And a murderer would be killed, hmmm? Small catch; sounds like a great book, right? I thought so....and then I read this book and I came up with the term " fake bait". Really only the first few chapters in the book are about the money issue, the rest of the book is not. In fact, if you removed the entire money issue from the book no one would notice except those reading the book based on the "fake bait". The writing was fine, characters were interesting, but..... It was not the meal I ordered. very disappointed.

Apparently this author's books are all .99 on kindles and Nook which is admittedly why I first started his "Donavon Creed" series.

Once you finish it though, you really don't feel like you read a .99 book. Most of those I don't really find entertaining or engaging, and usually I don't even finish them...but not so with Locke.

Donovan is an awesome character. I love his attitude and humor, and I enjoy seeing how he gets out of some of his situations. I feel towards him almost the same way as I feel towards Dexter. He's a killer, but yet I love him.

Each of Locke's books take you on a fun, action packed, fast-paced ride!

Great Literature? No. But I'm not sure that's what John Locke is aiming for. And Lethal Experiment is a first rate thriller. It starts with a couple in dire financial straights being given a choice: $100,000.00 if they will allow a murderer to be killed. Sound too good to be true? It is. With intriguing characters and a plot with enough twists and turns to please even the most difficult critic this book keeps you turning pages until you're finished. And at .99 it's not hard to see why people are going back to buy other books by this self-same author. Since according the Amazon web site 'every 7 seconds, 24 hours a day, a John Locke novel is downloaded somewhere in the world,' that's a lot of people reading John Locke's books. I must admit I'll be one of them.

Very different for me, I've mostly read sci-fi and fantasy, though I have read some Mac Bolan books 30 years ago, and Clancy's Rainbow Six which are at least similar to this.

I found Mr Locke's 1st person story telling very refreshing, as most other books are in 3rd person, and the characters, well, a lot unlike myself, but still very compelling. This was an easy read, wasn't difficult to keep up with the story, and created enough connection with the characters to want to see what happened next.

I am starting to really enjoy the characters and action that Locke's books provide. Again, this is not my favorite genre, but wanted to give something different a try. If you are looking for a very quick, fast paced , funny read, give some on these books a try.

Yet again a really good fun read not to be taken too seriously, but loved it and the central characters seem to be developing nicely, looking forward to the next.

Me gusto, me entretuvo mucho.

I picked this up while in Hay last fall. The author is British, but this takes place in the U.S. It's a "tough killer with a soft heart" trope with hard-played metaphor. Basically, the world is full of gorgeous women and bad men, and vice versa, and Donovan Creed is pretty much all about killing people. I'm not sure I want to read any more of the series, both because of content, but also because of all the myriad typesetting errors. However, I did end up liking a lot of the characters, perverse as they are.

Never saw it coming

Spoiler:

Despite telling myself I’d go to bed, I stayed up reading after Donovan went into a 3 year coma. 😳😱 Shocked is an understatement to say the least. I did not see that coming and I loved every bit of the storyline. It was soooo sad. I’m keeping my fingers crossed that book 3 will show us if Quinn survived and we can Atleast have him repent for his sins. I want Donovan to have his best friend back or a new one. 😢 I see Callie more as a prodigy to him.

Continuation of the Donovan Creed series, like the first, enjoyable and fast paced if a little far fetched in some places such as the psychosomatic 3 year, new face coma which seemed to be a vehicle only to kill off a relationship.

I was pleased to see that he developed a conscience about killing innocents which certainly made him more likable than the first installment which did bother me.

Enjoyed this regardless and will read the third chapter.

Excellent

Better than the first. Witty dialogue, fun characters and great writing make up for a thin plot. Really enjoyed getting to know the characters even more.

I have two more Donovan Creed novels left on my Kindle and it is taking every bit of self-restraint not to finish them ASAP. I really enjoyed the first Donovan Creed novel (please check the archives), but I have to admit things just better and John Locke took the entire Creed Universe to a whole other level. Check out the description and this is a portion of what lies inside:
“What if someone offered you $100,000 with the only stipulation being that a murderer would be killed if you accept the money?
Before that can happen, he has to take care of some lethal business involving a former lover.”
Rolling with the punches contained in this novel is not easy. Just when you think that you have figured out where it is going and are relaxing a little, Bang! Locke smacks you with another plot twist. This is a novel that has sass, verve, guts, and dare I say it emotion. Yes, for a heartless assassin, he is not a killer, Creed is an assassin, the man has more heart and soul than most. Irreverent, in your face fun, more midgets (oops, they like to be called “little people”, especially before they kill you), circus performers, shrinks,….I don’t want to give too much away so I am going to end there. Wait, did I mention the price of this bad boy is $.99.A bargain that kicks #$% and keeps going. I still have a smile on my face.
The insanity of Donovan Creed’s logic, his patriotism, intuition, love for his “friends” (does an assassin really have any?), and character flaws make this series a breath of fresh air in a cluttered genre that is way too uptight and at times concerned with making way too much social commentary. Looking for fun? Looking for the unusual? Do you want to be surprised and shocked? Plunk down what amounts to less than the cost of a pack of gum and take the ride with Donovan Creed and his merry band of misfits. I am glad I have and I am pumped to finish out the run.

5.0 out of 5 stars Locke is the master of the art of paraprodoskian writing

Just today a friend sent me an email that had a word I didn't know. Paraprosdokian, It is a figure of speech in which the latter part of a sentence or phrase is surprising and unexpected in a way that causes the reader to reinterpret the first part. It is done for humorous of dramatic effect; sometimes producing an anticlimax. John Locke is a master at paraprosdokian. In chapter after chapter, he takes you one direction and then slams you with something totally un-related or expected; but fun.

Locke, as Donovan Creed, has a PHD in the art of putting these chapters together about wonderful characters the rest of us couldn't make up if we tried. A paraplegic midget and his midget buddy, Hugo, playing games about killing people, like in the movie, Trading places. They call the ones to die Rumplestilskin Loan Candidates(sorry, that's how they spelled it). It's chock full of other murderers, gang rapers, Homeland Security and an uneasy alliance with Callie, a cold blooded killer. Added to this, his best friend looks like an elephant man. Creed's life is a maze of who he killed last, who he is going to kill next and can he trust anybody? Why live like that? And, was it the right thing to do?. His characters and his ruminating on the path of life he has chosen come to life as his action events park with tension.

Even surrounded by psychotics, he is in love with Kathleen who hopes to adopt a burn victim Addie. He also loves his daughter, Kimberley, who is in love with Charlie, a man who drugs and gang rapes girls for fun. He's gotta go, for sure. Feeling his life spinning out of control, he has a heart attack. Not actually a heart attack, though. The second one was a doozy.

After a paraprosdokian twist, Creed is faced with what to do about Kathleen, who is engaged to another man. He finds Kimberley, who continues to be a surprise and joy throughout the book. Then, Callie of all people, for whom he has a soft spot, gives him a push. Who knows what will happen next?

This book was just ok. At first is starts off with a powerful captivating story, adventure, and thriller. But then it gets more dramatic. I really did like this book, but I wouldn't recommend it to anyone that is under 18 and anyone that doesn't like sad endings. The ending to me kind of felt short. The most interesting thing about the book itself kind of dies off in the middle of the book which was a little disapointing for me. This would be a good book for someone that likes the Jack Reacher books. I think it is worthy of at least 3 and half stars. It just fell short for me in some areas, it was a great book and I enjoyed reading it, but the ending was sad for me. It might not be for others thought because it depends on what other people think is sad.

What I really enjoyed about this book though was the way it explained really neat tactics in which the characters used for certain jobs and missions. And I especially liked the characters personalities and humor. It was a good book and I will continue to pick up John Lockes works, but it was a little depressing at the same time.

I guess if you want a true story from a professional hit mans point of view, this is the book that you would love to read.

Hope you pick it up and would love to hear what some of you might think about this one!

Continuing with my pursuit of the lone Hero (see reviews for Joe Pike novels, John Rain novels, and Jack Reacher novels) Donovan Creed is probably the most unique character I came across.

I'd never heard of John Locke until I received my Kindle DX in the mail. Locke made his fame and fortune self-publishing his books in the Kindle world. For the Kindle, his books are ridiculously inexpensive (around $0.99 to $1.99). I was surprised at what I read and hooked from the start. Unlike my other series books, however, there is a difference in the books in terms of ratings...so I have not given them the standard 4 or 5 star ratings across the entire series.

First of all, the books are short but packing a powerful punch, a mixture of excellent humor (left me laughing at the insanity of what I was reading) and the grim reality of a hero who kills people. Lethal people introduces us to Creed, the business he is in, his side-kicks and his insane relationship within his own world and certainly the world most of us live in (let's just say Creed is not fit to live a normal life and does not understand it). Get ready for a roller coaster ride and, above all...enjoy! You will find that towards the end of each book you will be filled with disappointment that the ride is over...and almost certainly you will hunt down the next Donovan Creed thriller.

Primero y principal, este libro debería llamarse PLOT TWIST LETAL. Si.
