NOTE : This ISBN is a Study Guide and not The Text Book
In The Lamb’s Supper, Scott Hahn connects the Catholic Mass with the early Christians’ understanding of the New Testament’s Book of Revelation, explaining that the mystical visions of heaven found in Revelation can shed light on the sacrifice and celebration of the Eucharist. This message helps readers to more fully understand their faith, and the book is widely embraced by readers around the world.
With this new companion book, readers—both individuals and groups—now have everything they need to further deepen their engagement with, understanding of, and enthusiasm for Catholicism’s central and defining Sacrament, the Eucharist. With his Study Guide for The Lamb’s Supper, Scott Hahn adds summary and key points, scriptural references, excerpts from Church teachings, songs of praise, and questions for reflection and discussion for each section of the original to supplement, complement, and illuminate his bestselling work.
Scott Hahn is a renowned Catholic theologian, apologist, speaker, and bestselling author whose work has had a profound impact on contemporary biblical theology and Catholic thought. A former Presbyterian minister, Hahn converted to Catholicism in 1986 after an intense personal and theological journey, which he details in his popular book Rome Sweet Home, co-written with his wife, Kimberly Hahn. Their story of conversion has inspired countless readers around the world and remains a landmark in modern Catholic apologetics. Hahn holds the Father Michael Scanlan Chair of Biblical Theology and the New Evangelization at the Franciscan University of Steubenville, where he has taught since 1990. He is also the founder and president of the St. Paul Center for Biblical Theology, a non-profit organization dedicated to promoting biblical literacy among the laity and biblical fluency among clergy. Educated at Grove City College (B.A.), Gordon–Conwell Theological Seminary (M.Div.), and Marquette University (Ph.D. in Systematic Theology), Hahn brings a deep academic foundation to his work. His dissertation, Kinship by Covenant, was later published by Yale University Press and received praise for its theological insight and scholarly rigor. Throughout his career, Hahn has emphasized the covenant as the key to understanding salvation history, showing how the biblical narrative reveals a divine plan that unites all of humanity into God's family. His works explore themes such as the Eucharist, the role of Mary, the sacraments, and the authority of the Church, often drawing on the writings of the early Church Fathers to bridge the ancient faith with modern understanding. He is the author or editor of over forty books, including The Lamb’s Supper, Hail, Holy Queen, First Comes Love, Letter and Spirit, Swear to God, Reasons to Believe, The Creed, The Fourth Cup, and Holy Is His Name. Many of his books have become staples in Catholic households, study groups, and seminaries. In addition to his writing, Hahn is a highly sought-after speaker, having delivered thousands of lectures across the United States and abroad. He appears regularly on EWTN and has collaborated with Lighthouse Catholic Media to bring his teachings to an even broader audience. Scott Hahn lives in Ohio with his wife Kimberly. They have six children and numerous grandchildren. Together, the Hahns continue to lead efforts in evangelization and Catholic education, embodying a lifelong commitment to deepening faith and understanding through Scripture and tradition.
Receiving the study guide became a good reason to re-read The Lamb’s Supper: The Mass as Heaven on Earth. The book presents the Book of Revelation in it’s connection to the Mass in that the key to unlocking so many strange symbols is the liturgy. This is more than just of thesis of Dr. Scott Hahn. He discovered this independently only to find that it was a thread of teaching in the Church Fathers and some once again presented in the Second Vatican Council. Scott Hahn is adept at presenting deep theological truths in bite-sized chunks without watering down the information presented. Re-reading The Lamb’s Supper reminded me of many elements that I had half-forgot and really want to keep uppermost in my mind when it comes the the liturgy.
As for the study guide itself, it is a nice companion to the book. Each section following the book starts with a solid summary of the chapter itself, followed by related doctrinal statements, a hymn, and then a series of questions/reflections on the contents. These questions were written by the always great Mike Aquilina.
I am usually not impressed by study guides and their usefulness, but this is not the case here. While it could be used on a personal level, it is in the group setting that it would shine. I would really recommend it for youth groups, adult continuing formation, home school families etc. You can easily have people read the chapter ahead of time and then read aloud the summary which will both remind people of what they read, but also help in emphasizing and memory retention. The doctrinal component from the Catechism and a range of Church documents and other sources really connects the chapters with what the Church teaches. Plus the Questions are not just something thrown together but an important part of the guide, especially in a group setting.
The teaching on the Book of Revelation related to the Mass is very important and something that should be more known to help Catholics not only know their faith, but the reality of the highest form of prayer – The Mass. So I think it is ideal for use in youth groups, adult formation, or within a homeschool family since both the book and the guide are highly accessible and the information of primary importance.
An excellent book for understanding the Mass. Scott Hahn writes about the loftiest truths of the Faith in an understandable way.
He delves into the teachings of the early Fathers about the book of Revelation and what it means for liturgical worship. He clearly makes the reader appreciate the importance and holiness of the Mass even when the band is off and the homily is uninspiring. It is the eternal feast of the whole host of heaven.
Reading this book will definitely help you appreciate Mass more. For me, it helped me clarify the Church's understanding of the Mass as a true sacrifice. Christ's death on the cross was one sacrifice for all time and the Mass is our participation in this eternal reality where angels and saints worship as well.
Very readable, and very deep. A rare and valuable combination.
Having just finished facilitating the St. Paul Center Bible Study, "The Bible and the Mass," which has "The Lamb's Supper" as its recommended text, I found this study guide a very valuable supplement to the book and the presentation materials. Each chapter corresponds to a chapter in the original book. All follow the same format. They begin with three bulleted "key points" followed by a 1-2 page summary. Several related scripture references provide solid foundation for the material. A "doctrine" section provides supporting material through quotes from one or more of the CCC, the Fathers, Church documents, or contemporary churchmen. A song, usually familiar or with a familiar tune provide beauty and inspiration (singing along, even to yourself, is encouraged). Closing out each chapter are seven "questions for reflection and discussion" followed by recommended reading from some of Dr. Hahn's other books. These questions, developed by popular author Mike Aquilina, are really the key to this small book. Whether reading "The Lamb's Supper" on one's own, working through it in a group setting, or using it as part of a larger Bible study, these questions serve to really drive the material home by focusing on its relevance to and impact on the reader's own life. Armed with this book one need not hesitate in starting a study of his own, alone or by inviting others, even if he has no intention on providing additional material or questions.
You may have read the review I did for the book The Lamb’s Supperhowever this is for the study guide to go along with the book. This is to be used in conjunction with the adjoining book so that you can get a better understanding of what Scott Hahn discusses in the book and if you’re Catholic your faith may become stronger as you get a richer experience in your worship.
Each section of the study guide corresponds to a reading in the book which should be read so that you’ll understand the study questions and be able to answer. Also included are Scripture reference, Doctrine from the Catholic church, Catechism from the Catholic Church, a hymn and the discussion/reflection questions. As I said in my review of the book I think this is a good way to understand what my Catholic Brothers and Sisters believe and even if I don’t totally agree with them maybe some understanding can be a good thing in acceptance. If you’re going to read The Lamb’s Supper then I suggest using the study guide along with it to get the most benefit.
This was a short book, and I would hope in future editions of "The Lamb's Supper" it could just be added in the back of the book. However, it is a great resource for anyone studying "The Lamb's Supper" either individually or as a group.
This book showed how the Mass and the book of St. John’s Revelations are so closely tied. It makes St. John’s book a book of hope. It is a must read for all Catholics. The Mass is not just an hour of your time, it is Heaven on earth. Nothing else on earth compares with it.
