Toy Box: Domination

Rate this book
The flipside of submission is domination, and that's just what this Toy Box brings you. A companion to Toy Box: Submission, Domination brings you the flip side -- three stories told from the Dom's point of view. When Tanny confesses that running often feels like a scene, in The Sound of Pleasure, Billy decides to remind his sub that there's nothing on earth that can quite compare to what they do together. The Sound of Love finds stubborn Jeremy coming home in a bad, bad mood after a dangerous fall at the forge. Can Simon remind him that together they can overcome anything, even Jeremy's stubborn streak? Finally, The Sound of Home finds Marcus returning from a leather convention. Three days away from Jim feels like forever for the two men who live the lifestyle full time. It doesn't take them long to get down to the business of reminding each other just what home means.

Often referred to as "Space Cowboy" and "Gangsta of Love" while still striving for the moniker of "Maurice," Sean Michael spends his days surfing, smutting, organizing his immense gourd collection and fantasizing about one day retiring on a small secluded island peopled entirely by horseshoe crabs. While collecting vast amounts of vintage gay pulp novels and mood rings, Sean whiles away the hours between dropping the f-bomb and persuing the kama sutra by channeling the long lost spirit of John Wayne and singing along with the soundtrack to "Chicago."

A long-time writer of complicated haiku, currently Sean is attempting to learn the advanced arts of plate spinning and soap carving sex toys.

Barring any of that? He'll stick with writing his stories, thanks, and rubbing pretty bodies together to see if they spark.

I appreciate that Billy and Tanny didn't repeat themselves over and over again. I think this quick snippet moved them along and those that follow the series are going to be surprised at the changes to Tanny's body in the next book if they haven't read this one. This story was the strongest as far as I am concerned.

I don't think we see enough of Jeremy and Simon so this was a nice treat but much too short and didn't really propel the story any. The last time I think we got an update on them they were having the same problem for the same reason. Jeremy won't accept his limitations and is always getting hurt because of it.

I used to love Marcus and Jim the most but it seems like everytime we get a new glimpse now, Jim seems more juvenile and less adult then the story before. It seems to me when we met him he was a professional man, living, albeit unhappily, on his own. Now he seems like he has no ability to take care of himself at all without supervision. He seems to have shrunk too into something small that Marcus can easily carry around.

I liked these three stories from the Found, Forged and Bent novels by Sean Michael.

All three couples explore their love and particular kinks in their own unique ways. These are short, sexy reads that are like a refresher or reminder of some of the themes from the longer novels for those who have read them. They might work equally well as "tasters" for those who are not yet familiar with the longer books.

More from the Bent, Forged, and Found characters

Warning: This review might contain what some people consider SPOILERS.

Rating: 9/10

PROS:
- All three of these stories prominently feature the Doms’ use of sounds on their subs, and sounds are one of my favorite toys to read about.
- There’s a hot/beautiful/awesome piercing scene in the Billy and Tanny story (original novel: Found).
- Michael isn’t shying away from the tragedy in Simon and Jeremy’s past (told in Forged): the characters are simply learning to deal with it. The best part about that is that the “dealing with it” brings them closer together emotionally.
- The Marcus and Jim story (original novel: Bent) is basically just one drawn-out sex scene after the men have been apart for 3 days, and I loved it. I thought it was sweet and passionate and hot.

CONS:
- The timeline in Michael’s stories is strange. I can’t figure out how all the Hammer stories interrelate timewise: one of these stories briefly shows Peter, Killian and Treat’s lover, but in Bent, which pretty much has to occur before these stories chronologically, Marcus explains to Jim that Peter died of cancer.
- (This comment doesn’t have much to do with these particular stories, but I thought I’d voice it anyway…) Every Hammer story I’ve read has included Killian and Treat, the owners of the tattoo/piercing shop all the other characters frequent, and I really want to read a whole book in which they (and a new sub, perhaps?) are the main characters.

Overall comments: I’m already a fan of the Hammer series, so I liked these stories: each one has a healthy dose of sex, and the characters are different enough that the stories didn’t feel like 3 carbon copies. I don’t think it’s necessary for you to have read the novels about the characters first in order to enjoy these short stories, but if I HADN’T read the novels, I could see myself having been really curious about some of the background information, especially with regard to Simon and Jeremy.
