Do Not Live Afraid: Faith in a Fearful World

Rate this book
In scripture, the opposite of faith is often fear.
With remarkable frequency, the first thing God says to those poised at the edge of momentous decisions or holy encounters is, "Do not be afraid." What God intends is not simply an attitude adjustment but empowerment.
"Do not be afraid" finds its expression when we do not live afraid. This book invites readers and groups who gather around it to take that word to heart -- and beyond heart to living.
Each chapter considers a theme that explores what God's message of "do not be afraid" makes possible in our trust, vocation, witness, justice, and transformation. After each chapter, Indermark includes spiritual exercises that invite readers to move deeper into the words on the page.
The Leader's Guide at the back of the book provides step-by-step suggestions for an 8-week small-group study.

2025 book 14. John Indermark is a favorite faith author in my home. I've enjoyed Walking the Prayer Paths of Jesus, been led to the love and acceptance of my mother's passing in Home, and learned from his curriculm titles. This book, written in 2009, reminds us that while so many want us to live in fear of the unknown, as Christians, we do not fear if we place our trust in God. This book was intended as a group study, but I found it as effective as a single devotional guide with questions for reflection. The book is short, but I took almost a week ponder each of its 7 chapters.

There is plenty of fear to go around right now and plenty of people and authorities telling us to do just the opposite, to be very, very afraid. And there is plenty of bad theology to go with that fear and plenty of reckless behavior meant to look like courage. To read the rest of my review, visit https://readingfaith.org/be-not-afraid/.
