About the author

Johannes Mario Simmel was an Austrian writer.

He was born in Vienna and grew up in Austria and England. He was trained as a chemical engineer and worked in research from 1943 to the end of World War II. After the end of the war, he worked as a translator for the American military government and published reviews and stories in the Vienna Welt am Abend. Starting in 1950, he worked as a reporter for the Munich illustrated Quick in Europe and America.

He wrote a number of screenplays and novels, which have sold tens of millions of copies. Many of his novels were successfully filmed in the 1960s and 1970s. He won numerous prizes, including the Award of Excellence of the Society of Writers of the UN. Important issues in his novels are a fervent pacifism as well as the relativity of good and bad. Several novels are said to have a true background, possibly autobiographic.

According to his Swiss lawyer, Simmel died on January 1, 2009 in Lucerne, at 84 years of age.

Австрийски роман по съвременни, даже злободневни, за 1950-те теми. Австрия още е разделена на съветска и несъветска зона, няма свободно движение на стоки и валута между Австрия и Германия, трамваите скърцат, няма камери за следене на граждани, пари се прехвърлят с чекове, като можеш да прецениш, ако пуснеш писмо с чек до банката в колко часа в коя пощенска кутия, точно кога ще пристигне потвърждение с телеграма, че не е гумен. Героят е американец с тумор в мозъка, изживял професионалния си живот, като посредствен холивудски сценарист, с разочарована жена, от която не може да се отърве. Изпада в екзистенциална криза какво по-интересно да направи в останалата му не повече от година живот. Примерно да стане злодей като Ричард III. Или пък да избяга от всички на слънчев остров в Средиземно море. Или по нещо и от двете?

Забавното да четеш минала през цензурата на соца преводна литература са предговорът или послесловът от преводача или редактора, в които ти се напомня, че в прозведението се бичуват язвите на загниващия и безперспективен капиталистически порядък, потискащ личността (чрез уволнение от филмова студия за слаби сценарии, например).

Okumaya başladığımla bitirdiğim iki farklı kitaptı sanki…Bir senaristin yaşamı genel hatlarıyla. Ama bin olay yaşanıyor durmaksızın…
Anlatımını sevdim. Kurgu da fena değil. Ama anlatıcı/başkarakteri hiç sevmedim. Sonlara doğru ortaya çıkan Dr. Freund(!!!)’u çoookkk sevdim!!

aslında bu kitapta benim ufak gizli bir günahım var. epeyce kalabalık bir kütüphanem olmasına karşın ne zaman bu kitabı kütüphanemde görsem içim burkuluyor. çünkü bana ait bir kitap değil. orda olmaması gerekiyor. ama sahibi ne yazık ki şu an hayatta da değil. en azından oğlu ile temasa geçtiğim zaman oğluna vermeyi düşünüyorum. lakin kitabın bırakın o baskısını bulmak türkçe versiyonunu bulmak bile imkansızken onu nasıl geri vereceğim konusu da oldukça karmaşık. çok uzun zaman oldu okuyalı. o zamanlar çok sevmiştim. şu an konusu bile bir hayli bana uzak gelse de. neyse mario simmel iyidir.

Durch Zufall habe ich dieses Buch erhalten, und da ich gerne etwas Anderes ausprobiere, habe ich es trotz anfänglicher Bedenken gelesen.
Ich muss zugeben: ich bin positiv überrascht.
Der Schreibstil hat mir von Anfang an sehr gut gefallen. Die Handlung ist interessant und an einigen Stellen überraschend / unvorhersehbar. Es werden einige interessante Themen behandelt, die man so am Anfang nicht erwartet. Mit dem Ende bin ich leider nicht ganz so glücklich, da sich mir eine Frage stellt, auf die ich keine Antwort finde bzw. wo der Interpretationsspielraum zu groß ist.

The book was sad, but nevertheless I found it interesting and worth reading. This is the story of a man, who discovers he has brain tumor, and he will be dead within a year. So he makes sure he lives these last few months in his own way, without taking into consideration anybody else, until an unexpected discovery turns his whole life and thoughts around. To be honest I did not like the main hero very much, but he somehow made me interested in his fate and decisions.

Ich hatte keinerlei Erwartungen oder Vorstellungen von diesem Buch als ich es anfing. Dafür kam ich relativ schnell in die Geschichte rein, sie ist gut erzählt, ich mag den Stil, ich mag die Idee und vor allem mag ich das Ende, nach allem was passiert ist, ist es etwas obskur, aber andererseits ist das die ganze Geschichte und ihre Charaktere!

I read the book in the original german and found it to be an interesting story as well as a way to improve my understanding of the language. It was as good or better than most mystery stories I have read in english. I found it in a used book store.

Simmel is a master story teller. I read his booksin hs native tongue, German, and they are fantastic. Not necessarily esoteric, but excellent stories and wonderful meal recipes....
