The Source was my second Michael Cordy book, and my feelings towards The Source are similar to my feelings towards Crime Zero. The book was interesting, there was a lot of potential, but it didn’t quite live up to all it could have been.
The Source certainly had me curious to see how everything came together, with plenty of details that left me wanting to find out more. As interesting as things were, it became more and more predictable the deeper into the story I worked. Add in the fact the emotional connection to the characters was lacking, and this made for an easy quick read but wasn’t one that made a lasting impact.
All in all, worth it for an easy read, but not all it could have been.

Mit diesem Buch habe ich meine Liebe zu Abenteuerromanen wieder entdeckt. Die ersten Seiten waren etwas schleppend und der Schluss hat sich auch ein wenig gezogen, aber ich glaube ich habe seit längerem kein Buch mehr gelesen, dass mich so hat mitfiebern lassen :)

Objectively, this book is a 2 star. I mean, the writer doesn't even know the names of the main characters, if you read it you'll notice that he keeps messing up!!!!!!!!!!!!
But it made me aware of this XVIth century Voynich manuscript, which does exist for real, and is absolutely beautiful.
And again, the story was good and light entertainment, it showed a lot of creativity (a lot!!!!), it went fast, and this is what I look for in a no brainer.

The Source by Michael Cordy

Very little goes right in this book. Starting from the good part, the book is very readable and light no-brainer. I read it very quickly in one afternoon. I could not ignore the creativity of the author in his interpretation of the Voynich manuscript. However, it is all wrong.
Starting from the basic premise, the entire idea behind the book is so unbelievably ridiculous, I could not muster the suspension of disbelief required. I'm not talking about the actual deciphering of the Voynich manuscript, which while hard to believe I could see happening, but the idea behind it. Worse, the author tries to cover it with pseudo-scientific bubble. It is one thing to believe that a group of Gaia-lovers would fall for this loony idea, but a scientist saying "yes, I can see how this could work" to such a pile of nonsense is something I couldn't stomach. I should have stopped reading right then.
The plot is a standard adventure plot. A group of people follows a map of sorts to find some holy grail/cure to all illness/world-changing scientific discovery/riches, while being followed by a group of bad guys. As a light reading plot it isn't that bad, except that it is completely full of plot holes and childish solutions. Just as an example, at some points the group is tied up and gagged so they cannot communicate. But the next scene requires them to talk so the bad guy says something like "I'm sure your friends would want to know why you risked one of them" and leaves them ungagged. This sort of "it happens because the author needs it to happen" keeps happening, making the suspension of disbelief even harder.
The characters are equally forgettable, unbelievable and paper thin. Each of them soon falls to their stereotype, be it the sinister church head or the redhead Gaia lover (seriously, I'm not inventing this one). I could tell right on the first time we meet each character if they are going to survive the book or not. Mostly, they seem to be created to serve book's obvious anti-church, anti-oil agenda.
Maybe I'm too harsh on what is supposed to be light reading, but I personally feel it was a waste of time. Two stars out of five, mostly because of the creativity and the fact that it was readable.

העלילה היא עלילת הרפתקה סטנדרטית. קבוצה של אנשים עוקבת אחרי "מפה" כדי למצוא איזה גביע קדוש / תרופה לכל מחלה / מהפכה מדעית / עושר ללא גבול, בעוד ה"רעים" עוקבים אחריהם עד לסוף הבלתי נמנע. כעלילה לספר קריאה קלה זה לא כל כך רע, אלא שהעלילה מלאה בחורים ובפתרונות ילדותיים לאותם חורים. רק כדוגמה, בנקודה מסוימת קושרים את הגיבורים וחוסמים את פיהם כדי שלא יוכלו לתקשר. אבל בסצנה הבאה הם צריכים לדבר, אז כמובן שהאיש הרע אומר "אני בטוח שחברך ירצו לדעת למה סיכנת אחד מהם" ולא חוסם להם את הפה. הסוג הזה של "זה קורה כי המחבר צריך שזה יקרה" חוזר על עצמו כל הזמן, מה שהופך את ההשעיה של חוסר אמון עוד יותר קשה.
הדמויות עצמן נשכחות, בלתי אמינות ודקות כנייר. כל אחת מהדמויות נופלת מידית לסטריאוטיפ הנדרש אם זה ראש הכנסייה הרע או אוהבת גאיה הג'ינג'ית (ברצינות, אני לא ממציא את זה). יכולתי להגיד בפעם הראשונה שאנחנו פוגשים כל דמות אם היא תשרוד עד לסוף הספר או שלא. בעיקר, הדמויות נוצרו כדי לשרת את האג'נדה האנטי-כנסייתית אנטי-חברות הנפט של הספר.
אולי אני מחמיר מדי עם ספר שאמור להיות קריאה קלה, אבל אני אישית מרגיש שזה היה בזבוז זמן. אני עדיין נותן לספר שני כוכבים מתוך חמישה, בעיקר בגלל היצירתיות והעובדה שהוא היה קריא.

Cordy does a great job of finding interesting premises for his books and in that regard this one doesn't disappoint. He starts with the Voynich manuscript - which is a real mystery - and goes from there to a place of healing in a South American jungle. This was a great start, but then it went a little off the rails. While it is always interesting to show Catholic leaders as deranged fanatics, the main villain was a little too villainous. Some of the plot twists were obvious from the beginning and the motivations for some of the characters made little sense. My main problem, as an evolutionary biologist, is the complete lack of understanding of how evolution works. Cordy is very good at pulling contemporary issues into his novels, and at the time he wrote this there was probably some news about amino acids or something on asteroids and how this could have somehow seeded life on Earth. However, amino acids could originate just as (or probably more) easily on Earth and this theory isn't given much weight by scientists. The idea that a whole new organism could have originated all life and then somehow been cut off from it for billions of years just doesn't hold water. Plus the travails to get there also did not seem remotely survivable. Cordy seems to try to strike a balance between religious skepticism and faith and that doesn't work very much for me - best a pick a side. The book started with a great premise, deciphering the Voynich manuscript, but the execution of the rest of it fell a little short. Would have been even more interesting to tie this into the search for the fountain of youth by the early Spanish explorers of the New World but that was not a part of it. Still a very enjoyable read but just felt it didn't live up to its potential.

The Source is an adventure tale, similar to those written by Cussler, Brown and a horde of others. Cordy's work is easy to digest with interesting plots and a strong sense of good vs. evil. The Source is no different in those respects, however what is interesting with this novel is the clever underlying option for the reader. Cordy presents a story which neither stands with both feet in the science camp or the religeous, allowing the reader to make up their own mind, presenting fact for both parties. It's a well written piece in that respect, whereas most adventure novels are strictly one or the other. The action is well paced with a few twists thrown in for good measure. The characters are likeable or dispicable, as is par for the genre. An enjoyable read with some environmental elements which will make you think long after you have put it down.

Una docente di Yale, Lauren Kelly, annuncia al mondo di essere riuscita a tradurre il manoscritto più misterioso e controverso del mondo ovvero il manoscritto di Voynich.
Un ladro, viene sorpreso a rubare in casa della docente da lei e suo marito Ross e durante una colluttazione, Lauren cade ed entra in un coma profondo.
Qualche giorno dopo Ross viene contattato da un padre gesuita che gli fa strane domande e proposte.
Poco dopo viene avvicinato da un'anziana suora che raccomta a Ross una strana storia che a poco a poco risulterò sempre meno strana.
Con alcune perplessità Ross parte per il Perù con suor Chantal e Zeb, l'assistente di Lauren alla ricerda del Giardino di Dio.
Mi è piaciuto abbastanza, scritto bene, con molti dedttagli a volte un pò macabri.

La storia raccontata è avvincente, soprattutto se si pensa che è basata su un libro esistente. È una versione fantasiosa ma verosimile in alcuni aspetti su quello che potrebbe accadere se tale manoscritto venisse mai tradotto. La descrizione dei poteri forti del Vaticano è la parte che ho preferito, molto forte e stile codice da Vinci.
Unica pecca per chi avesse letto "la stirpe del miracolo" dello stesso autore sono le tante ridondanze narrative tra le 2 storie: figure di grande rilievo nel mondo scientifico, la moglie uccisa/ferita e il conseguente desiderio di salvare/vendicare la compagna, la figlia come ultima speranza di felicità da proteggere/salvare, la malvagità e la cecità della chiesa cristiana che mette il suo credo di fronte a tutto e che si serve di leali guerrieri, l'avventura in posti esotici e molto altro. Insomma.. Letto uno può bastare.

Máte rádi luštění tajemství, honbu za poklady, odhalování záhad starých jako lidstvo samo nebo prostě jen adrenalinové výpravy do divočiny? Je váš oblíbený hrdina Indiana Jones nebo Dan Brown? Neváhejte a vydejte se spolu s geologem Rossem pátrat po samotném Zdroji života na naší planetě. Tajemný Voynichův rukopis, který se dosud nikomu nepodařilo rozluštit, ho dovede až ke kolébce lidstva. A jak už to tak bývá, v patách má nepřítele, který má s novým objevem své vlastní plány! :)

It would be difficult for me to push this beyond 3 stars. While the premise and foundation is intriguing and promising, its characters lacklustre and unbelievable. Certain plot devices were matters of convenience as employed by most holy-grail-adventure-wild-goose-chase novels. I finished the book just to know exactly what happens at the end. I commend the timeline accorded, it is quite realistic- none of that 72hr wild good chase rubbish.

Stare to jak nie wiem, opis nudny, te 26 storn także. Wziąłem to tylko dlatego, że miałem alfabet książkowy do uzupełnienia, a to była jedna z dwóch książek na Ź, którą znalazłem (druga to był poradnik samorozwojowy o miłości czy coś takiego). Czytałem tę 26 stron na siłę, w ogóle nie miałem ochoty do tego wracać, ja bym tę książkę męczył. W końcu stwierdziłem, że to pierdole.
Dziękuję za uwagę, pozdrawiam serdecznie
Stare to jak nie wiem, opis nudny, te 26 storn także. Wziąłem to tylko dlatego, że miałem alfabet książkowy do uzupełnienia, a to była jedna z dwóch książek na Ź, którą znalazłem (druga to był poradnik samorozwojowy o miłości czy coś takiego). Czytałem tę 26 stron na siłę, w ogóle nie miałem ochoty do tego wracać, ja bym tę książkę męczył. W końcu stwierdziłem, że to pierdole.

Con el Códice Voynich como telón de fondo. se desarrolla una historia con componentes fantásticos, históricos, religiosos, amorosos, económicos... Un trasfondo muy interesante para una historia que, aunque lo intenta, no consigue sorprender demasiado. Sin embargo, es entretenido y nos acerca sin darnos cuenta a un manuscrito tan famoso como misterioso.

A fascinating tale. A mix of fantasy and reality far removed from daily life. A great page turner. Difficult to see what the author could write to follow this tale. I will buy more books by Michael Corfu to see where his imagination takes me next.

June 25, 2024I'm far more of a skeptic than most of Art Bell's listeners, so the fact that The Source doesn't really offer up anything on that side of the equation makes it a somewhat frustrating read, but, as it says in the introduction, this is not a book written to convince anyone of anything.

At the core of this novel is the 16th Century artefact known as The Voynich Manuscript - it really exists, its illustrations are real, and the fact it's written in a language that experts have never been able to identify or translate - is a matter of historical record.
Like Cordy's previous novels (I'm a fan and have read all of them), The Source combines adventure and action with Cordy's constant themes of science vs. religion, and Man's quest to understand the past and the mystery of our existence.
I've enjoyed all of Cordy's books and The Source was no exception.
Fans of Raiders Of The Lost Ark-type films will enjoy the exotic locations and fast-moving action, but it is the deeper, questioning nature of the story - universal themes of Man's conflict with one another and with the morality of faith and of science, that in my view give Cordy's novel a greater degree of satisfaction. Some readers might like to see those themes explored in greater depth, but Cordy doesn't let too much introspection get in the way of the plot twists - this is, after all, a thriller. He maintains a balance, which is what makes this a great read for suspense tragics.

A superb clever read that moves with pace toward an unknown climax... what more could one ask for in an adventure novel. Having read others reviews i believe some may become too technical in there's. Which reminds me of the story Billy Connolly told of his visit to "McDonald's" you know the family restaurant chain with his family and wife (i can't remember her name ... oh that's right Pamela) Sitting down next to the gentleman discussing the "Viscosity" of the thick shake through the straw... Really guy's forgetting a name or two should not denigrate a story to an also ran. If forgetting names were a crime, my children would have left me years ago. Maybe Goodreads should introduce a section just for anally retentive book reviews. Now back to the book ... damn fine read Michael.

I like that this book builds on a piece of esoterica but you definitely need some willing suspension of disbelief.
Ross Kelly is a geologist trying to do oil finding in a green way and quits his job on principle. His wife Lauren deciphers a cool manuscript and then all hell breaks loose.
It's got a sinister Vatican official, so you know I like that. A mysterious and knowing nun, and then they all tramp off to the rain forest to find a source for healing and possibly immortality. The new Eden?
The good news is that it's not all automagic, and there's some nutter science in there to keep it from being a little too Indiana Jones.

I read it within 3 days! The last night, I didn't sleep until it was finished.
It has a very interesting subject and a nice story full of mystery. The most exciting part is that the Voynich manuscript exists indeed, and the photos within the book are photographs of the genuine book!
I was a little bit disappointed because I was expecting more details about the decryption procedure and the difficulties found there, while the manuscript is decrypted at the first 3 chapters. But it is a nice adventure that kept me stuck until the end.
I would definately recommend it!

Non travolgente quanto i libri di James Rollins (al momento per me ancora al top), ma divertente e velocissimo da leggere. Le basi su cui si basa si possono tranquillamente studiare in rete e la parte più di fantasia non è così campata in aria come sembra. Adesso mi tocca recuperare anche i libri precedenti.

Wonderful adventure story which keeps you hooked until the end. The search for a mythical artifact, with a lot of action, drama, chock-full of conspiracy theories and a religious twist.
Michael Cordy again proves he is up there with the best in adventure/action novels.
