Master of suspense and bone-chilling terror, Robert W. Walker, BS and MS in English Education, Northwestern University, has penned 44 novels and has taught language and writing for over 25 years. Showing no signs of slowing down, he is currently juggling not one but three new series ideas, and has completed a film script and a TV treatment. Having grown up in Chicago and having been born in the shadow of the Shiloh battlefield, near Corinth, Mississippi, Walker has two writing traditions to uphold--the Windy City one and the Southern one--all of which makes him uniquely suited to write City for Ransom and its sequels, Shadows in White City and City of the Absent. His Dead On will be published in July 2009. Walker is currently working on a new romantic-suspense-historical-mainstream novel, titled Children of Salem. In 2003 and 2004 Walker saw an unprecedented seven novels released on the "unsuspecting public," as he puts it. Final Edge, Grave Instinct, and Absolute Instinct were published in 2004. City of the Absent debuted in 2008 from Avon. Walker lives in Charleston, West Virginia.
Thirteen-year-old Toby woke up to the blaring music of the merry-go-round as the monster, whose shirt and pants were covered in a rainbow of colors, slapped another coat of fluorescent-colored paint on his naked body. He was bound to a merry-go-round of wooden sea creatures - dolphins and seahorses. The man's demented voice tauntingly asks him over and over if he was having fun yet.
Carnivore Man worked at the carnival as a handyman and jack of all trades, but his dream was to have his 'art' displayed in a museum for all to see. He saw himself as a necessary evil - who else to teach these children a lesson if not him?
Special Agent Aurelia Murphy Hiyakawa woke from a recurring nightmare of Satan standing over a coral reef covered in blood. Images of angels and sea creatures. Nothing made sense as relating to any of her current cases where she works in the PSI unit of the FBI.
A boy genius invented a machine that transfers her visions onto the large plasma screens covering the walls while she gathers clues by touching personal items belonging to the victims. A team standing by to decipher her visions hoping for a case breaking clue.
I loved this book! It is very well written and the characters are fully developed and relatable. This isn't like my usual reviews which center around romance. This is a psychological thriller about a serial killer who has all the homeless boys in Phoenix terrified as he uses them for his own personal canvas. Leaving the police and FBI with no clues to go on.
This story is told in several POVs giving the story more layers as we hear the voices of the victims, FBI agents and police officers, Aurelia and even voices from the past. Aurelia is a divorced single mother who is struggling to find the time to rebond with her angry teenage daughter.
If you love TV crimes shows - Criminal Minds, Criminal Intent, X-Files, even Ghost Whisperer you will LOVE this book! It is action-packed, full of danger and will keep you turning the pages as you try to follow the clues in Aurelia's visions - visions that never involve her personal life. Something that could get her killed. This book has a surprising twist that makes Aurelia realize that she needs to follow her instincts no matter how outlandish they made be.
A dark, gripping, and twisty thriller. Very intriging to follow Rae's visions through CRAWL searching for killers and missing people. Emotional at times as I learned about Rae and her personal and family issues along with dealing with her challenging job and visions. Intense and emotional as I followed the pure evilness of Cy.
Rae is a well written character. The plot was well written. Although, some of the harm done to children was hard to read, I carried on. I'm glad I did because the ending of the story was worth it. Earning four stars from me!
PSI: BLUE Robert W. Walker Echelon Press, 2006, 284 pps ISBN 13-978-1-59080-508-4
Bring On the Clowns sounds like a fun phrase but after reading PSI: Blue I won’t think that again. A vicious murder is killing children by painting them with oil base paint and hanging their bodies in a house of horror. The paint coats their skin and the child is unable to breathe.
Psychic Sensory Investigator for the FBI Aurelia Murphy Hiyakawa is called to Phoenix, Arizona to help locate the monster attacking children. Aurelia is a striking personality. She has one wide Oriental eye jade black and one Celtic eye that is blue. Aurelia is part Asian and part Irish. She tells her favorite bartender that her father lived as a Buddhist and her mother as a witch. She is divorced from Tomi Yoshikani who some call the Japanese Donald Trump. Aurelia and Tomi have one child Nia who lives with Aurelia in a bed and breakfast that Aurelia bought as an investment, but it is turning into an endless drain on her assets because of constant repairs.
Against Nia’s will Aurelia insists that she accompany her to Arizona along with their housekeeper and promises that she will find time away from work to entertain Nia. But the man who calls himself the Carnivore Man is not cooperative. Aurelia is racing against time to find two boys he has captured while they are still alive.
Child genius Edwin Arlington Coffin has developed a system called Crawl which the FBI is putting into use in the search. This will be the first time that the system will be used outside of Quantico.
It is the children of the street that are being captured and they tell Aurelia of their legends- the wicked Bloody Mary and the Armies of the devil Zoroaster as well as that of the Blue Lady and the angels that try to protect the children.
The book is suspenseful and in ways humorous. The names are tongue-twisters such as Aurelia’s doctor, Lyn Polkabla. A lot of people in the book are reading books or short stories by Joe Konrath, I guess another of Walker’s fictional characters.
I LIKED AND DISLIKED THIS BOOK, I REALLY DIDN'T LIKE THE CONFUSING EXPLANATION OF THE HOMELESS KIDS, ABOUT WHAT THEY BELIEVED IN. THAT P*SSED ME OFF, I HAD TO KEEP REMINDING MYSELF OF HOW WORDY MR. WALKER CAN BE. THE STORYLINE I LOVED IT SINCE I WAS A BIG FAN OF THE TV SHOW "MEDIUM", AND WAS VERY UPSET WHEN IT WAS YANKED OFF THE AIR. I DO BELIEVE THAT THERE ARE REAL PEOPLE WHO ARE REALLY ABLE TO DO THAT. THE MAIN CHRACTER IS DIVORCED, SINGLE PARENT FBI AGENT/PSYCHIC AURELIA MURPHY-HIYAKAWA (RAE). I REALLY HATED HER TEENAGE DAUGHTER NIA, WHO NOT ONLY TRIED HER MOTHER'S PATIENCE BUT MINE ALSO. RAE'S SPECIAL ABILITIES DO CAUSE MANY PROBLEMS IN HER LIFE, SHE IS DRIVEN TO CONTINUE TO TRY AND HELP ANY WAY SHE CAN BY USING IT, FOR GOOD. SHE IS AFTER A HORRIBLE CHILD KILLER, WHO REPEATEDLEY EVADE THE LOCAL POLICE AND THE FBI. I DID REALLY LOVE ONE PARTICULAR PHRASE "SUCCESS IS OBTAINING WHAT YOU WANT"..."BUT HAPPINESS IS WANTING WHAT YOU GET". HOW TRUE!!!
Even though I am the publisher, or maybe because I am the publisher, I think this is one of the most in your face books I have every read.
From page one, you are yanked out of you perfect little world and propelled into the life of pure evil. It is thrilling, enticing, wicked, graphic, and totally spellbinding.
If you like a good thriller and aren't too squeamish, then you have got to read this book.
