Poker player Matt Freeman knows life is a gamble, so when an oncologist offers an experimental gene therapy as a possible cure for the terminal cancer killing his eleven-year-old son Andrew, he takes a chance. The treatment works, and Matt feels like he's beaten the house. His elation is short-lived, however, because Andrew is soon killed in a freak accident.
Nearly a year later, he is still struggling with his loss when a midnight phone call begins with a single electrifying “Daddy?” He races into the Nevada desert to find Andrew not only alive, but in possession of an incredible new ability and on the run from those he calls “bad people.”
Now Matt must protect his son from enemies with seemingly endless resources—and the willingness to turn Las Vegas into a battle zone.
Matt’s sone died in a fire. Or did he? Matt gets a call from his son to come get him. When he did he learned what his son had been through. That some was trying to kill Andrew. As Matt tries to protect Andrew the body count rises. Andrew has a new secret power that must be kept secret. This is a suspense filled novel that has a lot of surprising twists.
I received a Kindle for my birthday this year and decided that the first book I would buy and read would be No Limit by Fred Anderson. Why not something more well known? Well, I'm a fan of the blog http://www.bitchypoo.com and this book was written by the blogger's husband. She'd mentioned it and the plot description instantly hooked me. The book isn't available in any other format besides Kindle, at the moment, as Fred has yet to be discovered by a publisher. Thus I feel rather privileged to be allowed to read this novel before it becomes the New York Times bestseller it's destined to become.
I would describe this book as a mix of Harlan Coben meets Dean Koontz. The book jumps right into the action and never really lets go til the end. I'm surprised I didn't break my Kindle buttons as I feverishly mashed "next page" over and over again. Loved the characters, loved the plot... am hoping that the character of KhaosJunky the computer hacker will make an appearance in Mr. Anderson's future books as I developed quite the soft spot for him. And considering this book is, essentially, "self-published", it's amazingly well-edited; I stumbled across maybe 3 typos throughout the whole book. I sometimes find more than that in the first CHAPTER of a mainstream novel.
My one complaint about the book is one that doesn't even merit a drop in rating -- that is Dr. Davenport's character. There was so much focus on his weight in the beginning of the book for no discernible reason. It's a pet peeve of mine when overweight people are portrayed as villains, or lazy, or greedy... I realize that those traits probably fit the description of many overweight persons... but so do they also describe many people of normal weight as well. So to have a character be overweight for no reason AND to have so much focus on the fact that Dr. Davenport is overweight... well, it was just annoying. But it wasn't so annoying as to distract me from my thorough enjoyment of the novel. My only other complaint is the fact that this book isn't in any other form besides Kindle... how in the world am I supposed to give copies to friends to enjoy??? Oh, all right, I suppose I can't blame the author on that one ;).
In any case, if you don't have a Kindle, I highly recommend downloading the Kindle app for your computer or iPhone and reading No Limit by Fred Anderson -- it's the perfect summer "beach read"!
This is the first book that Fred Anderson has published and I have to say I am surprised. He writes like a seasoned author. The storyline is remarkable and I am not a big have of sci-fi. My attention was grabbed at the very beginning and was held through out the whole story. The story never gets dull or is predictable as there are so many twits and turns along the way. I did not want to put the book down the fast pace just keeps you going.
Matt is a great character as you can feel and sense his despair and when the call comes he did what any of us would do go and get your child. He tires his best to keep Andrew safe from his enemies. The details are remarkable as well. It makes you feel like you are right there with them.
I would recommend this book and will read more by Fred as well.
I was very fortunate to be able to read this book before it was released, and what can I say? It blew my socks off. Fred's got a fantastic storytelling style, very reminiscent of Dean Koontz, but with an economy of prose that doesn't bleed purple all over the page. (He also didn't use the word "sluice" five times in the book.)
I might be biased, but this is a very, VERY worthwhile book to check out. Unless you're the kind of person who goes into a deep depression just because the weather forecast calls for a little rain, you won't be disappointed.
I'm really having trouble putting my thoughts together for this review. On the one hand, there is A LOT of action (which I'm a huge fan of) and the writing is high-quality. On the other hand, I just couldn't lose myself in this book like I wanted to.

Wow. I don't usually read sci-fi, but this story gripped and held me all the way through. Brilliant. The story involves the heartbreaking loss of a young son to a house-fire after he has just beaten cancer. Nothing is as it seems and the action intensifies from hereon. I loved the Vegas setting and the poker theme running through the story. The heroes are endearing and the villains heinous. Original, fast-paced, exciting. I'll definitely read more by Fred Anderson.
I loved this book! For Fred Anderson's first published book I was beyond impressed. The action never stopped and the twists were well thought out. For me to actually cheer out loud for a character is unheard of and I was truly invested after the first couple chapters. I would highly recommend this book and for $1.99 it's a steal! I'm definitely watching for future books from this author.
