I read this and wept. Read more, and wept. Gave a speech about it at a Toastmaster's meeting, and unfortunately, wept again. If you're an animal lover -- be careful.
This book was recommended by Pat Miller on her peaceablepaws Yahoo group when someone on the group asked for some information about working at an animal shelter.
Since I am considering a career change from one in publishing to one in animal welfare, I got this book as soon as I saw Pat's recommendation and read it in a couple of evenings. (I respect Pat Miller's work and writings very much.)
I found the different approaches that people took to telling their stories to be very interesting. (the book is a compilation of pieces by a variety of authors) I don't think that you can say that you 'enjoy' reading a book such as this because it deals with a difficult subject, yet it was an insightful read. I have a background in humane work and therefore I was prepared for the stories, although that isn't to say that they didn't touch me deeply. Your every day animal lover probably wouldn't be able to get through all of Circles of Compassion, but if they did manage to read the difficult stories as well as the 'happy endings,' perhaps some people would be motivated enough to come out from behind their apathy and begin to participate in the animal welfare movement.
