Imperfectly Proverbs 31

Rate this book
To help her archeologist sister, geeky Samantha Rose agrees to swap her black T-shirts and diet of pizza and ice-cream for a pretty apron and a summer caring for her adorable twin nieces and their newfoundland dog in Huckleberry Lake, Idaho. How hard can it be?
But when Perfectly Proverbs 31, the homemaker blog she starts to reassure her sister, goes viral and everyone believes it’s real, Sam needs to reluctantly keep up the pretense. If she doesn’t, she risks ruining everyone’s summer. The girls’ over-protective grandma will surely to swoop in to take the girls.
Forced by his boss to interview Sam, then take a vacation, a month at the lake with nothing to do but write a fluff piece is burned-out city crime journalist Daniel Novak’s worst nightmare. But he finds her surprising and delightful, as her attempts to impress him with a picnic go horribly wrong. Time with Sam could restore his lost faith in people — and in God.
Can Ms Klutz-in-the-Kitchen transform herself to a Proverbs 31 woman in time to stop him revealing the truth about her blog? And what will happen to their growing love when he does?

Being rather a failure in the cooking/homemaking department myself, I had high hopes for this book, and it delivered pretty well. :) Sam and Daniel were both sweet characters, and the author did a bang-up job with the message--I went from "how is he ever going to see this?" to "YES, I SEE HOW THAT WORKS!" in a couple of blinks, which is something not many authors have ever pulled off for me! That moment, that realization was just so perfect and powerful, and it tied everything together so wonderfully... I just loved it. And I felt like I totally understood Daniel and what was driving him all the way through, so even when I didn't like where things were going to end up, I was never really mad at him for it.

Sam, though, I had a little harder time understanding. Not relating to--not at all--she was awesome! But the picture of how and why she had gotten herself into this spot just never really felt clear to me. She was afraid her mom would be disappointed in her--did she think her mom believed she had gone from kitchen klutz to world-class homemaker just like that? And while I understood her worry about the girls' other grandmother, the way things wrapped up with that kind of took the teeth out of that threat for me. I get that there wouldn't have been a story if she hadn't misled everyone about the stuff on her blog, but I just didn't see the motivation with the strong scruples she was supposed to hold. And all the back and forth about "but did she actually technically lie, though" left me a little confused as to whether her actions were supposed to be justified or not. That said, I completely understood and sympathized with and felt for her in her complete lack of homemaking skills, and I adored her relationship with her nieces and the way that she kept her priorities straight when it came to taking time for what was actually important.

I would have liked to spend some more time actually watching the chemistry between them (and between Daniel and the girls) actually develop--it seemed like they were introduced, and then all of a sudden, they'd spent all this time together, and everyone got along--which was nice, but I would have liked to spend that time seeing them get to know each other as well rather than jumping into the middle of it. (:

The only thing that really bugged me was the fact that after Sam acknowledged that she couldn't get romantically involved with Daniel until he came back to God, she didn't seem to do much to check her thoughts or feelings for him; in fact, after that point, there was more about "he isn't interested" or "he isn't staying" with "and it doesn't matter since he isn't a Christian" tacked on sometimes as an afterthought. I know it set things up to move nice and quickly once he came back to faith, but it still bothered me quite a bit.

3.5 stars

Content--some noticing, touching, and kissing (slightly descriptive); mentions of lying and deception; mentions of a pastor committing fraud and abuse (physical and spiritual); some dangerous situations

I really like the main female character of this story. I loved her struggles and her honesty. I have to say that I struggle with reading this book in the beginning but I am glad that I did.

Autumn Macarthur's Imperfectly Proverbs 31 is an enjoyable and lighthearted look at what it means to be a Proverbs 31woman.

Samantha Rose has many talents, but running a household isn't one of them. However, when her widowed sister needs her to watch the twins, Samantha is determined to make sure the girls have a comfortable and fun-filled summer.

As a joke, Samantha starts a blog with over-the-top pictures of perfect meals (prepared by a neighbor) to let her sister know her daughters are being well taken care of. But, when the blog and its recipes go viral, a New York reporter is sent to write a story about this woman whose talent seems too good to be true.

Daniel Novak knows instinctively that not everything is as it seems. Will he expose Samantha's accidental secret?

Heartwarming contemporary faith-filled story set in small Northwest town. Honesty in self-evaluation and in relationships is the main theme. Part of a series but can be read without reading the others.

Cute Hallmark-esqu Rom-Com

A really fun story.

Sam can't cook or clean or do any of the homemaker things her sister and mom (and sister's mother-in-law) are so skilled at, so when she gets the chance to have her sister's kids spend the summer with her, she starts a blog documenting her all the perfect moments (perfectly cooked meals, perfectly dressed girls, etc.) to show her sister she's got things handled.

Daniel is a reporter who focuses on the truth, the whole truth, and nothing but the truth. When his editor decides he's overdue for a vacation and sends him down to interview a homemaking blogger who has gained overnight popularity, hijinks ensue.

The story was simple and mostly predictable, but it felt like a fresh take on your typical rom-com. When you have honest, open characters, instead of constant miscommunication (like the majority of rom-coms), the characters get to actually work through real issues, which are so much more relatable. I liked that a lot.

I do want to comment on the Christian element, because I know I tend to be critical of how a lot of Christian romances approach the role of faith and God. While I appreciate that the author didn't use Christianity as a reason for women to submit to male authority, faith did still seem overly passive. Sam simply accepted that whatever was happening must be God's will and didn't wrestle with it. I wanted her to, even if it was just a little, because to me someone who doesn't wrestle with God is as unrelatable as a perfect homemaker. But maybe that's a me problem.

Overall, it was fun twist on some overused tropes and a cute story. I'd read Autumn MacArthur again.

Imperfectly Proverbs 31 by Autumn Macarthur is a delightful Christian romance exploring the themes of faith, forgiveness and the Father. It is the second book in the Huckleberry Lake series.
There are lessons for us all to learn. The world, especially the media puts pressures on us all to be 'perfect.' Social media shows a snapshot in time not the reality behind the picture. 'Perfect' does not mean 'without flaws', it is a myth we are all trying to live up to. God looks at our hearts. We need hearts and lives aligned with His.
People misrepresent God. "Don't make the mistake of judging God by His people." Some paint a God who sits in judgement but nothing could be further from the truth. God is love. It is in His nature to love. He doesn't love because He has too but because He takes delight in us. It is wrong of us to paint God in a bad light and put others off knowing Him.
Bad relationships throw up issues of truth and trust. Not everybody is out to get us. We need to take a risk and learn to trust again.
We all have regrets. "The choices she hadn't made clouded her grey eyes." We will always regret the things we didn't do because we were too busy working for stuff that doesn't last. We need to grab life and its opportunities.
A wonderful loving atmosphere pervades the novel, drawing the reader into its circle.
I adored Imperfectly Proverbs 31, another wonderful read from Autumn Macarthur.
I received this book for free. A favourable review was not required and all views expressed are my own.

She Longs for Perfection

Sam thinks of herself as an old maid at 31. She has a good life in most ways, but it filled with longing to be like her Mom as well as her widowed sister. They are both such wonderful cooks and home makers. But she just isn’t cut out the same way. For her sister’s sake, she leaves Seattle and goes to take care of her 5 year old twin nieces so her sister can go on a Missions Trip for the summer.

In the meantime, a very straight laced journalist gets an assignment to go to the town of Huckleberry Lake to interview the blogger whose blog went viral a short time ago when she published a “Perfectly Proverbs 31 Lady”. But he wants no part of such a crazy thing like that. He is all about exposing frauds to the world. He wants to see justice done for the victims of fraud. He wants no part of the assignment. But Meg, his boss and good friend, won’t accept his reasons not to do it. Furthermore she has scheduled him in a Bed and Breakfast there for 30 days. Well that really gets him ticked off. However Meg explains to him that he hasn’t taken a vacation in years plus his work is suffering from it. And he can’t believe that she is doing this to him.

Truth test comes way too soon for Sam when they end up with her fixing lunch supposedly. Even with the great help of her friends, the picnic lunch goes terribly wrong! Things go from bad to worse quickly. How will they deal with their many issues? That’s the heart of the story.

This book is a 3.5 stars for me. I did enjoy it as it is a sweet, clean faith based fiction story. It started dragging around the middle of the book for me. It seemed redundant that she was having cooking lessons to make a homemade pastry pie form scratch every day and failing. So, how about starting this noncook with something much easier that she could have success with ? LOL Anyway, I am glad that I finished reading the book as the last few chapters made it worthwhile. Both Samantha and Daniel worked through some faulty thinking they had by believing what others had said to them. Daniel started to see what mercy and forgiveness looked like which helped him to understand having a relationship with Christ. (His father treated him very poorly growing up and he had stolen money that was set up as a nonprofit.) Samantha began to see her strengths of loving others and not just basing her self worth on being a good housekeeper and cook. There were 2 statements in the book about one of the nieces having a lisp because she said "Wose" for her name "Rose". I am a Speech Language Pathologist and that is NOT a lisp. Producing /w/ for /r/ is the phonological process called "gliding". A lisp typically occurs on the / s/ and / z / sounds and also possibly on / sh/, /ch/and /dz/. Overall, a sweet story.

Cute, very simple plot, a little wordy

This is a cute plot, not a lot of substance to the story though. It's a quick read, most of it is about Daniel's lack of faith in God, due to his dad's treatment of him, and about Samantha's inability to make a pie. I think some food prep mishaps would have made this much more interesting. Instead a couple of pie mistakes were throwing in (& I've never heard of someone's fingers being too hot to melt butter or of even rubbing the ingredients by hand). So overall I didn't really feel sympathy for Samantha or hope that Daniel's faith would be restored...a better author would have produced those feelings in the reader. The twins made me smile though. So did the dog. As for being a little wordy, there were a few sentences I had to read several times in order to comprehend..one subject miles from the verb with the longest adjective phrases between them. I don't know if the ereading publication not showing any punctuation was the problem or if the author just is a poor writer of grammer. But like I said..while not prize winning material, this is a cute, quick romance novel.

I read this book as part of a box set. after one book I didn't relate to this book was so good. I Loved this story.

We start with Daniel who is a reporter who investigates fraud and needs to find the truth and print it. His father ended up being a con man and it affected him greatly. Sam is a blogger with a blog featured in the paper and Daniel is sent to do a follow up of the story. We see the reason for the blog and that Sam isn’t the perfect home maker and Daniel is determined to show the world she lied. There is so much more to Sam and the reasons for the blog as we learn. She didn’t actually lie intentionally but can Daniel see past this to the truth.

The story has so many layers. From dealing with how we perceive others see us. To seeing how words said as a child can have a lasting effect, to seeing how actions speak way more than words.

A lovely story that I am so glad I got to read. Will be reading more in this series.

A lovely Christian contemporary novella about web designer, Samantha who has been appointed as temporary guardian of her archeologist sister's twin daughters for the summer whilst their mom is on a dig. She creates a blog to keep her sister up to date but the blog goes viral. Daniel Novak, a New York investigative journalist is sent to write an article about the blog and he intends to uncover anything she is hiding.
Samantha battles with her conscience as she feels that she is lying to her audience (she is a terrible homemaker and the blog implies otherwise) and Daniel is very rigid about finding out and reporting the truth due to some personal experiences. Sam is lacking in confidence with her homemaking skills. In the process Daniel finds God who he has pushed away and he finds himself wanting more in life. This is a charming, heartfelt story that I really enjoyed and rate this book 4.5*.

I found this book discounted on Amazon via BookBub; this is my honest review.
-I loved the chemistry between Daniel and Samantha. I think even in seeing each other for a month, they probably gain a lot of information from each other, get to know the other, and fall in love.
-I liked the idea of Sam taking care of her nieces and setting-up a blog so her sister could have access to her daughters' life away from her.
-The other characters in the book were fun to have around too, like the neighbors and the daughter who took care of the inn, etc.
-Something to think about. So true. Whatever life you live at home, you take for granted. Be it good or bad, you think everyone lives like that. Beating, shaming and shouting is not all what parents do.
-I took one star off because there was too many quotes, prayers, sermons, etc. in the story. It did not add to it but took enough space for me to notice.
-Kudos on the editing.

This was my favourite story in the Love, Faith & Kisses anthology.

From the opening note from the author to the reader right to the end, I was hooked. A journalist who tells the truth and only the truth in his pursuit of deception and lies. A webpage designer turned blogger who accidentally becomes a sensation after creating a homemaker blog as a way of connecting with her twin sister. Twins, a small community that open their hearts and lives to visitors, a few household disasters and a large dog called Bear, add to the delight. Here's one of my favourite lines, from his POV "[she's] too full of the faith he'd left behind long ago to suit him." There were moments when I was so caught up in the difficulties that each of them were facing that I cried. There was a happy-ever-after, but it wasn't the one that either of the central characters either expected or thought they deserved.

Imperfectly Proverbs 31 is a delightful contemporary romance by Autumn Macarthur. Samantha who has been told she'll never get married unless she learns to cook considers herself an "old maid" at 31. When she temporarily moves to Huckleberry Lake to care for her two young nieces for the summer, she unexpectedly finds herself in love. Will the truth of her blogging life be the undoing of this new romance? The bits of humor and the addition of a lovable dog and two active little girls always makes for a fun and interesting story. Readers of sweet romances will not want to miss this one. I won a copy of the audiobook and was not required to write a review.

Samantha is a amazing woman. The relationship she has with the twins is wonderful. When Daniels boss forces him to fly out to interview Samantha he is not happy. When Daniel meets Sam he knows there is something she is hiding. The author will have you on the edge of your seat waiting to see what happens next. The characters in this book are all very special people who you will enjoy reading about. God is working throughout this whole story. I had the honor to review this book for the author for a honest review. I would give this book a higher rating than a five star review if I could.

Imperfectly Proverbs31

As a first time reader of this author I am eager to read more of her writing. The characters literally come to life and they become like close family. The story is so realistic and each person , adult or child, becomes as though the are truly a beloved family member. I truly feel God uses the author's talents to bring His light, love and faith into the reader's heart and enriches lives. May God bless this incredible author to use her gift of writing to touch literally thousands upon thousands of lives with her heart warming and endearing style.

In this sweet, easy read Samantha is caring for her two adorable nieces while doing whatever she can to assure the grandmothers and her sister that she is capable of such a task. Her motive wasn't to deceive, so much as to assure, but in the process she makes 'the world' believe she is the perfect homemaker. Daniel's goal is to, once again, convince his readers that there is much dishonesty and deception in the world, and he is ready and able to show his readers one more example. He didn't anticipate how difficult that would really be.

His boss sends him to Huckleberry Lake for a month to vacation and find out the truth about Sam and her blog. This is a story with sweet characters on a journey to find themselves and God.

Delightful and encouraging story about love, mercy, grace and forgiveness. In this story we meet Sam a boggled who on her internet page appears to be the perfect homemaker and Daniel a jaded newspaper reporter who seeks to uncover untruths and reveal them to the world. They meet when Daniels editor sends him to interview Sam. What path will be chosen when untrusting city boy meets imperfect country girl? I love how this book deals with unlearning assumptions about God and others.

Daniel is told by his boss to take a working vacation. He has to interview Samantha who has a homemaking blog. He is not given a choice.

He meets Samantha and gets to know her. She is caring for her nieces. They are so cute and loving. Love books that have children in it.

I really enjoyed this book. Loved how Samantha cared for her nieces. I definitely recommend this book.

Samantha Rose known as "Sam" is an interesting leading character as she ends up writing a blog about homemaking even though she can't cook and isn't much better at other household tasks! Daniel is a reporter who comes from New York to write an article about Sam and ends up falling in love. If you enjoy humor in our reading, you will not want to miss Imperfectly Proverbs 31. I received a complimentary e-book from the author. This is my honest opinion.

Everyone wants to make a good impression and Sam (short for Samantha) is no different. But her efforts to impress crime journalist Daniel fail miserably. The Christian values of truth and integrity ground this book as well forgiveness, redemption and the unconditional love of God for everyone. This was a delightful story that included precocious children and a happily ever after.
This book was given to me and the opinions expressed here are my own.

Absolutely an amazing book. She starts a blog for her sister - - - and ONLY her sister. BUT other women see it and like it - a lot! And then there is a journalist who totally does not believe her, AND sets out to prove she is fake . . . . . and life gets interesting as he visits with her - and her nieces. And the girls love him. AND he sees how she strive to be perfect . . . .and fails (after all, she's human!!). TOTALLY LOVED THIS BOOK!!!!

News reporter Daniel Novak is forced to interview blogger Samantha Rose who set up the blog so her archaeologist sister could be updated on her twin’s activities while she is away. When the blog gains acclaim Daniel suspects she is lying in some way and wants to find out what it is so he can expose it. The plot involves Sam’s lack of homemaking and cooking skills, plus grace and forgiveness. Definitely a heartwarming book and a must read.

Perfectly hilarious!

This is a truly laugh out loud book with lots of swooning, sighing and cringing along the way. Autumn MacArthur uses her honest humor to address an issue all of us deal with - expectations. Especially now with social media, the tendency to compare is common. Samantha and Daniel remind us that our abilities are a unique blessing we are able to share with others. I definitely plan to grab the rest of this series!

So this OVERTLY Christian story works on several levels.

The characters are realistic––flaws and talents, fears and strengths.
The dialogue and pacing of the story we great, too.
The plot... Oh my. Perfect...

The message was on forgiveness, grace, love, accepting yourself as God created you, and following God's leading and timing.

A really enjoyable story about insecurities and old hurts and how they influence behaviour and relationships. It's not funny how much damage such things can cause. In this story they work their way passed those, to find the beauty in being true to yourself. A fun and lovely story with a great ending.

We all come up short when reality happens. A delightful, funny, heartwarming story. She was a fabulous caring, delightful person. Her weakness pulled her down. She was not domestic. She was honest and a good Christian, but when compared to others, she failed. The most important point of her story was that she was exceptional in the talents and caring that she did have

A story of acceptance for oneself

This was a very quick read. The characters were well expressed and I even felt like I could relate to their faith journey, road bumps, and hurt.

I would recommend this book to those who enjoy reading faith-based books. This is one of the better ones.
