I reread this today’s and my favorite part in the whole book is his makeovers. I love the natural transformations. No one does this quite like him. I like finding my face shape and eye shape and getting his tips for how he applied it on the woman. But, getting those techniques off the page and to my face will be a bit harder. Ha ha. But still a nice book to look through. Also felt he didn’t take in mind that some people have combination skin. Not just oily or dry.
A good makeup instruction manual for beginners. But, all the makeup looks were a bit “same-y.” The pictures with the makeup makeovers were gorgeous, but I would have liked to see some other varied makeup looks. The makeup done on the women with darker skin looked very orange to me, but maybe that was a lighting issue. Also, the finished makeup looks pictures looked like they had a filter, everybody’s complexion was just a bit too perfect!
The most important thing I learned from this book is that highlighter brings things toward you and contour pushes them further away. Seems obvious but I’d never thought about it like that before. Overall this book isn’t great or terrible. 3.2 stars
The book has beautiful pictures and is built on solid principles of color. Robert Jones does beauty well and his look is something like glamour-girl-next-door: beautiful, natural, approachable. The first part of the book discusses basics (glossary of terms an illustrated tool guide, etc.) and there are tips and tricks given throughout, but the bulk of the book discussing contouring and how to use it to your advantage. He recommends and gives examples of 3-shade contouring for the face using foundation and 3-shade contouring for the eye using eyeshadow. He helps you understand your face shape, your eye composition, and appropriate makeup application to suit you. A nice reference tool for those times when I might be doing makeup on a face that isn't mine.
After watching several episodes of What Not to Wear (on TLC) with me, Brian deemed that my makeup application skills were lacking. So, as a joke, I got him this book for Christmas. We ended up reading and looking through it together and going shopping together for makeup for me. He's a manly man, so he's comfortable doing stuff like that. =) I think this is a pretty good book. It was fun to finally learn how to do my makeup. And I like that the emphasis is on getting a natural look that merely enhances your natural beauty while maybe downplaying some of your "flaws".
This was most helpful. It explains about what products are available, what they are used for, why they are used, and how to use them with different face and skin types. I learned all the things that I didn't know about products and how to choose for yourself. It is a lot easier than standing dumbfounded in the makeup aisle at the store with a plethora of choices. I also liked how there were many examples of different face types, eye types, skin types, and coloring. It made it easy to see patterns of use and how I can start experimenting for different looks.
This is a wonderful book. Robert Jones tells you everything you want to know about make-up. The products and what they work the best at doing. Ex pencil concealer is good for red pimple marks ect. He also explains how to put on the products to fix your features; ex eyes are too far apart/close together. Additionally he divulges what color of eye shadow works with your eye color.
I am sorry I have to take this book back to the library so soon. I will be making furious notes and seeing if I can purchase a copy for my permanent collection.
This is then number one most helpful make-up book I've ever pick up in my life. I am embarrassed (and yet relieved) to admit that it corrected many silly mistakes I was making in putting on make-up (a single color of eyeshadow globbed on my whole eyelid, putting concealer on after foundation...etc.) It walks you step by step through the use, purchase and application of all the different pieces of make-up and provides gobs of incredibly inspiring photos to boot. Brilliantly done.
I actually really liked this one. I do think that lipstick they suggested to my face type will not match, but it all depends on proportions. They have enough models to pick bits and pieces that would match just about anyone. I mostly was only looking at brushes and how they did make-up on models. This book will not teach you EVERYTHING and will not give you ALL possibilities, but it is a good start or continuation.
Makeup geeks should have a copy of this book. A complete step by step methods to apply makeup and tips that can enhance your features. Plus all the pics are good for your everyday look you want to try on.
I found some good makeup application tips in this book - some I had heard of before, others were new. I've tried most of them, and I have to say that they have worked for me.
