Just a Fling

Rate this book
Law student Dawn Mathison’s steamy summer romance with solar developer Callan Marlowe is just a fling…until it isn’t. Swept off her feet–and into lots of different positions–by the sexy Brit, Dawn believes Callan is The One...right until he dumps her.

But that was last summer. Now, she is living her dream with a kick-ass job in New York City and couldn't care less about Callan. Not one bit. Truly.

Callan knows he left Dawn broken-hearted, confused, and pissed off. But, dammit, he doesn't do serious relationships. Not after his past. It doesn't matter anyway because he'll never see Dawn again. Which is for the best. Really.

When a twist of fate brings Callan back into Dawn’s life–and into her office–their sizzling attraction reignites. Maybe this time around, they won't get too serious. But fate has a sense of humor. Because Callan thinks Dawn is The One who can help him. And maybe turn their hot affair into something more?

Just a Fling in under 10 words
- Second chance romance
- Then-and-now
- Light with darker themes

⇢Thoughts

This was an adorable second chance romance! I’m not the biggest fan of second chance romances where the couple breaks up and its stressful and complicated, so I appreciated the way it happened in this book. I also really liked that we got that long flashback because it mixed up the mood a bit! (While also providing context, of course.)

Dawn and Callahan were both such great characters, and I wouldn’t have been mad if we had gotten even more details about both of them.

And as a couple— they were so cute! Lots of great scenes that I had a fun time reading. Of course, as mentioned, there were some darker themes and moments as well, but they just made the story more emotional. I’m a big slow burn fan so I wouldn’t have minded if they had taken longer to get together, which is something I say for the majority of book couples haha but I think that most people will enjoy the way Dawn and Callahan’s relationship progressed!

She’s in England for her student exchange program in law when she has a meet cute.
He’s a super tall, hunky Brit that has her swooning from the start. But he can’t commit, his past has secrets that have his mind screaming “it’s just a fling” but he can’t get her out of his mind even when she returns to NYC.

A beautiful story about tragic loss and second chances. You will be mesmerized with this truly addictive steamy romance. It’s very hard to put this book down, a must read romance.
I love love loved it!

“Callan Marlow, you are frustrating and aggravating and have caused me a lot of heartache over these past two years.” That quote pretty well sums this book up.

Dawn and Callan meet for a summer fling, he’s got a troubled past he doesn’t tell her about and then the break up make up repeat begins.

It wasn’t a terrible book. It has its moments but the back and forth for me was a bit much, like you’re a lawyer girl, know your worth.

Side note: If you like a little spice, it had it.

Thank you NetGalley and The Wild Rose Press for the ARC in exchange for an honest review.
Dawn is a law student, Callan is an entrepreneur, they meet fall in love break up, meet again, break up etc Callan is a broken man with personal issues who won't talk. Can Dawn help him heal? Will Callan let her?
I think I might have to stop reading books where the main focus is romance because its just not getting me excited anymore. You know its not great when you are more excited to finish the book than you are about reading it.
That's not to say the story or the writing was rubbish because it was not but it was a little boring at times. I never felt connected to the characters (except the letter at the end. I admit that got me). I'm fast starting to dislike the trope of the broken mmc with a past too difficult to face. Also if you have to give the man 3 chances you know it isn't right and I speak from personal experience. I do have to point out I loved the dialogue from the fight between Dawn and Callan when he confronts her about revealing personal details to her boss. That was quite realistic and one of the best I've seen in books I do admit.
All in all not bad but not great. I'm honestly mixed up on this one.

"How sad is that ? Loving someone who can't love you back."

I'm currently crying while writing this. the epilogue was so so beautiful omg I can't. I loved everything about this book : characters, relationships, and Callan background omg :( I don't read many third-person point-of-view books but I definitely loved this one, it was so well written; I just can't tell you how much I love second-chance romance aaaah. I was kinda mad at Callan at some point omg I wanted to punch him in the head but how am I supposed to hate that man ?? he's the cutest. I kinda expected the plot about Callum's past but not entirely tho,

Thank you to the author ( Katherine Grace) for giving me a chance to read this story (ARC) in exchange for an honest review.

Review to follow…Dawn and Callan have a summer romance while she is studying abroad. They of course fall for each other and hard, but Callan is kinda a jerk about it and emotionally unavailable. Ultimately she returns back to New York where she is interning for a law firm awaiting her boards.

Fast forward when Callan comes to the same law firm for a legal deal when his business is expanding and they run in to each other. Sparks fly. Old feelings surface. The angst is felt and the push pull of them both drew me in. I loved Callan, then hated him, then loved him again. His backstory, which I will not ruin, explains so much. We learn why he is both strong and broken and we get to see him ask for help in healing. This made it so much more than a RomCom or second chance romance. Dawn was a strong character and really grew into her role.

Book is written in two timelines, summer fling and present. Written with both perspectives of Dawn and Callan so you really feel their feelings. What starts off as a fling really develops the story. It is beautifully written. While the flirting and bantering was fun, it had some serious undertones and angst.

Thank you to NetGalley, The Wild Rose Press, and Katherine Grace for the opportunity to read and review the advanced copy of this book. Anticipated publish date 4-3-2023.

Guysssss I finished my first ARC from @netgalley today and feel so accomplished ☺️
Here's my review for JUST A FLING by @authorkatherinegrace which released this week!

Highlights -
🇬🇧 second chance romance
🇬🇧 grumpy x sunshine
🇬🇧 dual POVs + timelines
🇬🇧 British MMC x American FMC

I gave this 4☆ I loved the tropes, the meet cute, and dual timeline so we could get more background into Callan and Dawn's relationship.

🇬🇧 Callan struggled with a mysterious trauma from his past relationship that readers don't fully know the truth of until later in the story. Callan was motivated to work through this for Dawn, but it took some time for him to want to do it for himself. I actually really liked this because mental health treatment/trauma processing does not happen overnight and it was clear it would be an ongoing commitment for him.
🇬🇧 The BFFs in the story were top notch - called bullshit when needed and gave sound advice too.
🇬🇧 HEA but didn't gloss over all the inner work that the two MCs needed to address.
🇬🇧 the epilogue had me in tears! TW for grief/loss and substance use trauma.

Thank you to the author, publisher, and @netgalley for this ARC in exchange for my honest review 🇬🇧

A second change romance that has a bit of mystery? Yes please! Dawn and Callan meet in England and I really enjoyed falling in love with them as they were falling for each other. Then Callan has to go and mess it up because he’s emotionally stunted. Told from third person point of view of both Dawn and Callan, this book will make you fall in love with them, make you hate Callan, and then make you fall in love with Callan all over again. I enjoyed the career aspects of both the characters, especially Dawn. I went through law school and took a bar exam, so I understand her worries about student loans and also waiting to find out bar results. The author put me right back to that moment from MANY years ago. I also enjoyed that Dawn’s character growth. While she seemed to be a bit of a push over in the beginning when it came to Callan, she eventually stands up to him to tell him how she feels. I will say, there is one point in the book that Callan gets really mean and Grace did a great job of making me feel hate for this man, as if he were saying those things to me! It is fast paced and quick read. OH yeah… there’s definitely a bit of spice in this book. I loved it!

Now, I'm not a huge fan of second chance romances buuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuut this blurb and cover pulled me in haaaaard, and it did not disappoint!

Meet Callan, the utter moron who, after a passion filled summer with Dawn, dumps her. Like why do men do that? Why do they act like THE ONE and poof, become a horrible jerk?

Dawn is over him, she is SOOOOOOOOOOOOO over him and her heart has mended. That is until a little thing called fate (and other stuff) puts Callan back in her path... now Callan thinks SHE is the one.. would she take him back? Would they keep things casual or.... 😉

It took me exactly 3h to read this! I didn't time it, my husband did, I was taking a bath 🤣 I absolutely ADORED this! This would make a perfect Netflix romance movie! I loved how I went from wanting to throttle Callan and to well, *cough* gently ruffle his hair 🤣

Do you believe in second chances ?

Well I do. Atleast , after reading Just A Fling.🙂 I am not a huge fan of second chance romances but this.. this one was an exception.

Dawn , is an American law student who studies in UK for the summer. The last thing she wanted to do in an abroad country , was to fall in love & it somehow happened. She fell in love with Callan , a British businessman , who is afraid of doing serious relationships because of his past. Despite everything they spend a hot , steamy summer together , until Callan ditches Dawn. 💁 Time passes by..... Now that I already told you this is a second chance romance , their paths cross again in USA and then in Spain and the story gets emotional , hotter and interesting.

This book was easier to finish within a single day because I never got bored. The writing still was simple and interesting. And the EPILOGUE ! It was one of the sweetest epilogues I have read in my life.

This sweet , fun , steamy , emotional , second chance romance novel comes out in April 2023 and you can pre-order the book now.

I huge thank goes to the author for providing me an e-arc of the book.

When I read the blurb for this book, I knew that I had to read it. It was a second chance romance, that touched on legal work and travel—what’s not to love. The author did an amazing job of making the characters feel real and their careers seem genuine. I feel often jobs or passions can feel like props in books, where we either don’t get enough information to ground it or it’s a massive information dump. Here, the author created a wonderful balance, which made the characters so much more real.

The one issue I had with this book was the timeline. I usually love a nonlinear storyline, but, in this case, it didn’t work for me. The book started in the present, before going to the past, and then back to the present. By having the first four chapters in the present, I knew the conflicts/ problems and wanted to know how they were resolved. We then spent the next forty percent of the book reading about how those problems came to be. While this was the heart of the novel and very interesting, sometimes it felt like it was in my way to finding out what happened next… And I desperately wanted to know what came next, and how Dawn and Callan overcame these issues... But instead I was reading about how these issues came to be. It took all of my self control not to jump to the second present timeline, and then come back and read the past once I finished.

All that being said, I still really enjoyed this book. I thought the story was interesting and the charters relatable. It’s definitely worth reading if you like second chance romances or romance books that have connections to the legal field.

⋆。°✩ ARC review

Warning: Spoilers May Be Ahead

Let’s start with what the premise of the book is

It’s marketed as a second chance romance between Dawn and Callan, they met in the UK one summer and had an epic fling that ended on bad terms. Fast forward a year later and Callan is in the US to Dawns surprise, what happens when sparks fly again?

Now i’ll admit this is probably one of the first second chance romances I have ever read because honestly it’s really hard to please me with it, I’m a grudge holder and if I feel the persons actions and words don’t make up for whatever the conflict was, then the story is ruined for me plain and simple. Which is unfortunately the case here. Callan ROYALLY fucked up multiple times and there was not one ounce of groveling at all, it was a simple “sorry, but like I’ve got trauma so forgive me please 🥹”, like sorry buddy I need you to actually fucking prove you’re a better person this time.

Also a forewarning it is written in third person, which I didn’t know beforehand and i’m usually not a fan of because it can be hard to stay in the story when you can’t actually understand what’s going through the characters minds, but I think the author did a good job for the most part of still trying to give us insight while in third person.

Now, here’s the hard part for me, I honestly truly believe this would’ve been better suited as a simple fluffy romance with no spice and just fade to black sex scenes, bc…TO ME the sex scenes felt juvenile, like I felt like I was reading about two awkward teenagers who just hit puberty. Their monologue during was just soooo awkward. To give some quotes Dawn looks at Callan and says “Let’s get to the naughty part” as she pulls his pants down?? like what in the middle schooler? And the authors word choices for describing certain acts? Callan at one point “erupted with an animalistic roar” and Dawn “closed her eyes as he continued to pet her” (and for better context he’s “petting” her breasts). Like idk man, this might be someone’s cup of tea but I just cringed during every sex scene.

Okay so now let’s discuss them individually. Dawn, miss ma’am. As much as she convinced Callan to get some professional help, I think she needed it just as much, because this bitch was DELULU. First of all, during the summer when they first met, this girl becomes utterly obsessed with Callan, like insta-love, and is imagining marrying this man within the first week. Bitch, I need you to slow down. And she just plays along with him and is convinced she can stay in Europe and they’ll be together without ever ONCE actually communicating her feelings to this man, or asking him HIS feelings about her?? hello?? And once they rekindle she’s even worse. First, she just accepts his excuse for what he did last summer, like yes okay, he has trauma and that may be WHY he did what he did, but it doesn’t excuse it whatsoever, and she just takes it at face value. Second, this man outright says he’s not promising her marriage, kids, basically not even a serious relationship and she’s like, okay well atleast we’re together YAY. PLEASE STAND UP DAWN PLEASE. Let me provide some quotes as evidence of her level of delusion. “She’d play along. Be the cool girl, up for a fling or whatever non-committal, non-permanent bullshit he’d sold himself on. She’d show him how much they belonged together” “She was convinced he loved her; he just didn’t know it”. Y’all get the picture i’m painting yet? And for the love of god, she was so hypocritical, she consistently nagged on him to get professional help for his “betterment” but the minute he even mentions just simply helping her look for a new job she’ll actually enjoy she says “He had no right to pester her about her career” and she goes absolutely berserk on him, like she was acting crazy man. He has no right? But obviously she had the right to keep telling to get to help, and she had the right to tell her boss about his panic attacks. Because yeah we’ve got double standards for days in this bitch. She’s just, insufferable. I can’t talk about her anymore, or I might pull my hair out.

So let’s move on to Mr. Callan :). Tsk, tsk, tsk. A lot of your issues were mentioned in Dawns paragraph so we’ll keep it a little shorter here. My main axe to grind is the fact that he used Dawn that summer and proceeded to whine and bitch and moan to everyone after she left like he loved her. He repeats over and over that it’s “Just a Fling” (ha see that’s where the title comes in ;) ) but never once expresses this to Dawn, he’s over here treating this girl like his wifey and she ain’t got a clue in the world he’s planning on dropping her on her ass once she leaves. My other problem with this man is something I mentioned earlier, he just doesn’t do enough to make up for his bullshittery. He ditched her at an airport without explanation, withheld his intentions for that summer, shows up out of nowhere still not providing an explanation, wins her back, gives an explanation, and then turns around and immediately jumps down her throat over a misunderstanding and says “You’re in love with me. How sad is that? Loving someone who can’t love you back, who is going to leave you when this thing has run it’s course”. He’s just a terrible love interest. He says and does bad things, weasels his way back in without any proper making up, and everything is just hunky dory. It’s annoying, I’m just tired of reading books with FMC’s that have no backbone.

I’ll give you my one positive, the ending was saved a little with that tear jerker of an epilogue. The letter to his deceased daughter, holy shit it was waterworks central, balling my eyes out. But, again I didn’t feel I got good closure, in the last chapter he shows up again with this whole “sorry, I got help this time so I’m like ready to commit now, let’s go babe”. And she ofc takes him back, and then we jump immediately into an epilogue where they have a kid and they’re all happy and whatnot, so again absolutely no groveling.

If you read all of this, then congratulations babe you’re a real one. I just think this book had a lot of my strongest pet peeves rolled up into one neat little basket so it felt my full wrath. But i’m just here to provide some facts and what you do with them, is up to you.

Just a Fling is a second-chance romance between law student Dawn Mathison and British developer Callan Marlowe. Dawn meets Callan while an exchange student in England and they have a whirlwind summer romance. The reader is soon aware that Callan, while captivated by Dawn, has secrets, and is suffering from angst and guilt. Dawn thinks the relationship is going somewhere, but at the end of the summer, he lets her go.

They meet again a year later in New York City at the law firm where Dawn is interning while she awaits her boards. Callan is there for a meeting regarding his solar development business and when they are thrown together on a business trip to Spain, their relationship heats up once again.

This book had all the ingredients for a second-chance, on-again, off-again romance. The characters had great chemistry and it was spicy. There was also a lot of angst on both sides, but it got to be a little too much for me at times. The characters could also be tiresome; Callan couldn’t make up his mind, but he wouldn’t get help for his issues. Dawn was a pushover with Callan but did stand up for herself later. All in all, this was a decent debut novel for the author, and I enjoyed it.

Many thanks to NetGalley and The Wild Rose Press for the opportunity to read it in exchange for my honest opinion. I gave it three stars.

My Thoughts:

Okay, I'm still reeling with emotions after reading this one. 😉🫣🥵😁🤣😭😢😡😭🥰
Dawn and Callan are so perfect for each other, yet so
much stands in their way, like an entire ocean for one.

For most of this story we know Callan was married before
and they are no longer together, we dont know why, but we do
know it will be tragic. When the reason for the wife's absence is revealed? 🫣

Callan has issues, man. I wanted to shake sense into him, still not sure why
exactly Gemma, Sarah and Will didn't , but i get it by the end. We are definitely
rooting for Dawn and Callan to get it together and just be happy.

"Love should be easy. Loving Jane is easy. Love shouldn't be painful. Don't do that."

Love is just crazy. Just a Fling fits right in the craziness.

Read it. You wont be sorry! 🌟🌟🌟🌟🌟 🌶 🌶 🌶 🌶 🌶 💕💕💕💕💕

Surprisingly, I liked this one. Almost loved it. It was cute, emotional and spicy. A good combo.
I looove Jane. She’s my fave character.
The spice was great. Nothing too crazy, but enough to feel the attraction.
3rd act breakup…Really? Did we really need this? What I didn’t like is that even though the author tried to show that the MC are in love with each other, I couldn’t feel it. For me all that their so-called love was pure physical and sexual attraction. Nothing else. And the ending was rushed.
Callan’s story got me emotional.

I adored this book! I'm such a sucker for second chance romances, so this one checked ALL the boxes. I appreciated that the author provided the back story of Dawn & Callahan's relationship, to help tie the story all together.

This book has it all. Romance, steamy scenes, working through difficulties, along with some deeper subjects that just make the characters seem so relatable.

Thank you Kathrine Grace and bookinfluencers.com for my e-ARC.

Dawn thinks Callan is the one until he dump her and she doesn’t know the reason at all. But then after a year, they saw each other again. All Dawn wants was for both of them to be professionals. In the end she still loves him but she was so scared because Callan lives far away from her and scared that she will get hurt again.

Callan, after he saw Dawn again he still likes her and he wants Dawn back in his life. But he knows that a year ago he leaves her without any explanations. He knows that he hurt her and not explaining what he did before.

Overall it was a great read. This book has second chance romance. I loved how Dawn and Callan find their ways to each other again even though they have ups and downs.

This book was a extremely well written, second chance (3rd chance) romance. These characters were beautifully flawed in a way that only a reader could love it. Once I started reading this book, I couldn’t put it down.
Dawn is a character who reminds me of myself. She is extremely driven and is almost too worried about accolades over her happiness for all firstborn children. She is an extremely relatable character.
Callan on the other hand is dealing with a grief that is almost unimaginable. I think that the author does an extremely good job of describing how grief is felt by a man.

This isn’t just a second chance romance it’s like a fourth chance romance! This is one of those books where you want to yell at the main characters because of all the miscommunications. It does play a nice role in talking about male mental health and trauma.

Second chance romances re not up very high on my usual favorite trope list. That is unless it’s done right. This one… was so right! I finished this book in record time. I never got bored, my attention was laser focused. Simple and understandable writing. It is real and relatable. So many real life issues are portrayed in this book and I feel like it just made me connect so much easier, and so much better with the characters. It’s not far fetched at all. This literally would make sense as if someone named Dawn were telling you their past romance history. I laughed, I cried, I rode out those highs and lows as though I’ve lived them. Katherine Grace had a way of showing her readers a way to relate to these characters and their traumas, experiences, and emotions. I felt so much while reading this book and I just could NOT put it down. Bravo! I absolutely recommend!

I received this book for free from NetGalley. This review is honest, unbiased, and completely my own.

“Dawn, you are my sunshine. My love.” Sincerity radiated his entire being. “I will make a show every day of how much I love you.”

“I don’t need a show, Callan. I just need you.”

“He held her close and whispered, “Always.”

Ahhhh! I am such a sucker for a sweet, emotional, second chance romance. This book had a hint of mystery when it comes to Callan’s past. He has his own demons and never planned to fall for Dawn; didn’t think he was allowed to after what happened to him. Dawn is a driven law student that wants to be top in her class and dating and falling in love is the last thing she is thinking about. Just a fling… that’s al it will be. They didn’t expect to have perfect chemistry and I loved the chemistry between the characters and how without realizing it they helped each other through their issues. They were made for each other. Ahhh and that epilogue… made me tear up. The book definitely comes full circle.

If you love a good sweet, happy ending, second chance romance, you need to read this book. It is a super quick read. Solid 4 star read. I really enjoyed this book. Thank you Katherine Grace for letting me read an arc; can’t wait for your next book.

Law student Dawn Mathison's steamy summer romance with solar developer Callan Marlowe is just a fling... until it isn't. Swept off her feet-and into lots of different positions-by the sexy Brit, Dawn believes Callan is The One... right until he dumps her. But that was last summer. Now, she is living her dream with a kick-ass job in New York City and couldn't care less about Callan. Not one bit. Truly. Callan left Dawn broken-hearted, confused, and pissed-off. But, dammit, he doesn't do serious relationships. Not after his past. It doesn't matter anyway because he'll never see Dawn again. Which is for the best. Really. When a twist of fate brings Callan back into Dawn's life-and into her office-their sizzling attraction reignites. Maybe this time around, they won't get too serious. But fate has a sense of humor. Because Callan thinks Dawn is The One who can help him. And maybe turn their hot affair into something more?
Where do I start? I think this book had a lot of potential and maybe most of the things are a me issue. I mean the book is well written and has some incredibly funny moments in it. But it was so predictable that it hurt. Like it was pretty clear early on what Callan was hiding, but it was just a build up, that really wasn't necessary for a romance novel. Maybe like a thriller. The story goes from the present day when Dawn and Callan bump into one another, to randomly shifting back to the one summer they had together. And it drove me crazy because it was just sexual attraction, no intimacy was really built between them. The whole summer is just Dawn convinced they are going to be together for even and Callan only seeing her as a fling.
Perhaps most annoying, Dawn who has always been a high achiever and goal oriented just randomly gives up caring about school and law because she's so focused on Callan... she's ready to change her whole life... and she isn't even in a relationship really. They know next to nothing about one another. When they meet again and she decides to give him another chance, he sees her as a way to fix what is wrong with him... Like somehow she is supposed to cure the trauma he suffers even though he hasn't seen a professional. I just really struggled with this one. I think that it is completley possible that these were just me issues. However, I wanted more. I think it would have been better if it ended without a HEA.
