With his first major case, fire-cop-in-training Matt Clark finally has the chance to shed his image as the Clark family's goofy youngest son. Then an explosion lands Matt and his partner, Lara Hughes, in the hospital, and the investigation--and the fires--gain momentum. Lara's now a witness, needing all the protection Matt can give...if she'll accept his help. The beautiful but always aloof Lara has worked hard to keep her distance from Matt, until a desperate choice to save the investigation leaves her with nowhere else to turn.
Award-winning author Stephanie Newton lives in Alabama with her pastor husband and three children, aged 23 months to 21 years. A Southern girl through and through, she loves sweet tea, SEC football, corn on the cob and air conditioning. She’s written eight books for Harlequin’s Love Inspired Suspense line.
Stephanie Newton does an excellent job of keeping you in suspense and having plenty of could be guilty characters. I also appreciate the way she brings people from the previous books back onto the scene to make it one long continued story even though each book is a new suspense and romance. This is the fourth book in the Emerald Coast 911 series.
Matt Clark and Lara Hughes are both firefighters and partners. Matt had asked Lara out about six months before and it almost ruined their partnership. Now he holds his desire inside and does his best to settle for friendship. Lara wants to keep her past hidden so she earns respect on her own, not pity Her mom is bi-polar and her sister is a drug addict.
One fire turns their life around. It was a meth lab, they almost did not escape in time. After finding guns and cash in the walls it became more then what it seemed. When Lara waved at the CSU guy in the back yard, who ended up not being CSU she became a target to be disposed of.
A large part of why I liked this novel is due to the fact that Matt and Lara were friends when the novel started (with Matt wanting something more). It made the transition into romance more believable.
I'm really loving this series! I almost done with the fifth book already, and will probably give it five stars as well.
The author does such a great job in capturing the reader's attention from the very first page. She puts just enough romance and suspense in it to keep me from feeling overwhelmed. Though her stories sometimes get pretty intense, I enjoy reading them. In this story, the focus is on a new drug that is taking lives around the area. Fireman, Matt Clark, and his partner, Lara are on the job to try to get to the bottom of a series of meth-related fires and deaths while they look for Lara's sister. The story is pretty sad and the scenes with drugs are used are pretty depressing, so if you are looking for a fun, light-hearted story, this is not for you!
I wish there was a "three-and-one-half: star category, as none of these are REALLY worth four stars. Nevertheless, this was one of the best of the series, even though a little "preachy" in a couple spots. The story itself was very exciting, though I am tired of the subtle misogyny [the man always rescues the woman:]. Even with that, it was a fun read.
This book was amazing. to this day I still think of it as one of my favorites. the characters were amazingly developed and the whole series was great. I loved hearing about the whole family. Awesome book.
A large part of why i liked this one is due to the fact that Matt and Lara were firends when the novel started (with Matt wanting more). It makes the transition into romance more believable.
This was a nice quick read in between chapters of Fall of Giants. Part of a series set in Florida; there is one more that I will read before going back to FoG.
