Personal thoughts 💭
This is by far one of the most beautiful and inspiring books I’ve read this year. I wish our children could listen to these wonderful teachings for their lives! It’s beyond useful and it provides the us with the opportunity to be merciful as well.
⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️/5 Thank you to @librofm for this ALC and for giving me the opportunity to enjoy such a gem!
As I started into this book, I was reminded of the John Maxwell book called Everyone Communicates, Few Connect. That statement could not be truer. We communicate in many ways, but none more than our words. There are so many verses in the Bible about the power of our words and our tongues. Dr. Eggerichs has delivered a very practical guide to helping everyone become a better communicator. I was not expecting the depth of information, but was not at all expecting the level to which he challenges our thinking about how and what we communicate.
Along with exercises in each chapter, this book is full of very thought provoking questions around each idea. You would do yourself an injustice to try to breeze through this book. To gain the most from this book, you should take it slow and take the time to reflect on the ideas and questions and do the self evaluation exercises. You will gain a better understanding of yourself and will undoubtably grow as a communicator. This is a very valuable resource.
In Speak Your Mind, Emerson Eggerichs (author of Love & Respect) outlines core principles of communication from a biblical perspective. Less theology and more self-help, the book employs four guiding questions centered on truth, kindness, necessity, and clarity to lead readers to self-evaluate where they may have made communication missteps.
This is a short, easy read with generally applicable principles. Although the book includes relevant examples, I found it to be more helpful as a reflective tool rather than an extensive, practical guide for improving your communication skills. The concepts, while true, are basic, and you’re unlikely to get much from this other than reminders if you have extensive communication experience.
Many different ways and reasons people struggle to communicate. Challenges and suggestions for ways to better yourself, and illustrated, sometimes humorous, reasons why you should.
